So I'm obviously (if I'm on this site) obsessed with anime, right.
I watch subs exclusively* and I really hate dubs. Like, even if it's a decent dub. I hate that it takes away the originality from the anime, artist and culture of anime in general. Not to mention, I often find dubs to seriously lack enthusiasm and expression in comparison to subs. Am I alone in this?

My disapprovement (not a word) of dubs has made me have several arguments with my boyfriend. He prefers dub so that he doesnt have to constantly be looking at the screen in fear he's going to miss something important (ie. he can look at his phone, etc) and also because he feels like when he's reading the subtitles he's missing the actual action.

Valid points, I know. BUT STILL WTF I HATE IT LIKE DONT WATCH ANIME WITH ME IF YOURE GOING TO SWITCH IT TO DUB LIKE RIN OKUMURA ISNT EVEN RIN IN THE DUB HES A WHINY B**** WHEN IN THE SUB HES BAD***.

#relationshipdiesfromotakubreakdown

What do you guys think about the dub/sub preference? :D

*with the exception of the DB series

Mod note: This post which was a thread starter and the following six or seven replies have been merged into the main subs vs. dubs discussion.

I'll watch dub once in a while if it isn't horrendous, I think there are some that are actually decent and they don't bother me too much. Honestly I'll watch dubs sometimes so I can play on my DS at the same time and only half pay attention

Have had tons of threads about this x.x;;

Everyone has differing opinions, don't see why it should bother you that much. If you must know, I feel the same way as you (except I don't sound as insufferable) - Voice acting is big, they go to school for it, they make their name by it, shows are made with specific VA's in mind

and then we rip it out, and input some whiny douche to replace something that they worked hard for because "I dun liek to read"

-- but seriously, I could see the other side of the argument where people might miss things in the animation during dialogue heavy scenes. It's a personal preference

(Think the bigger deal would be you thinking Ao no Exorcist is a good show)

There is already a thread (possibly more) on the sub vs dub war. Maybe post there instead.

And the word is disapproval c:

Hahahaha. Rants.

Well, it is not that I hate dubs. I watch Animax and usually animes there are dubbed. Some of it are just painful to listen and some are just okay. I just get used to it though.

There are anime here that are dubbed in my Native language. Those are the ones I hate because I saw the anime (jap dub) and hearing the dub version is like a massacre to the series.

You're not alone on this, the majority of this site prefers sub over dub for those reasons. I prefer to watch a dub if it's available for the same reasons as your boyfriend, but I don't have any issues watching a sub if I have to. In the end, it all comes down to personal preference and you shouldn't feel bad if someone has a differing opinion, nor should you ridicule them for having that opinion.

There are plenty of dubs out there that are very good. They are a very small % imo, but they are out there. Just because an anime is dubbed doesn't mean its taking anything away from the anime. It definitely doesn't effect the artistry and culture of the anime. A dub and sub aren't any different when it comes to that because a sub is still being translated for an english audience. You are still trusting the subs to translate the culture and artistry accurately. Just like you are a dub translation. The difference is the voice acting. This doesn't apply to those who speak and understand japanese. Watching raw would be the absolute ideal way to watch, but unfortunately, most of us don't have that luxury. Just my opinions on the matter :P

I'm mostly a dub watcher. I only watch sub if the anime doesn't have a dub. Or if the anime had a very very horrible English dub (like Mew Mew Power aka Tokyo Mew Mew) then I'll definitely watch the sub. It's just that most of the time I prefer Dubs because I don't want my parents to think I'm watching porn in my room with those high pitched Japanese voices. I don't have any long enough headphones to reach either so that's out of the question, plus I don't want to go deaf from using the headphones so much. Besides, sometimes the Japanese voices are annoying as hell, and that's why I usually prefer a dub. There are a handful of people in the world who only watch dubs, and then there are about 10 handfuls of people who watch only sub. So I mean that's a big difference, but it doesn't really bother me because I'm half blind, and so that is partly why I don't watch subs that much. I'm blind if my left eye to be exact, and so when I'm watching the subs, I can't concentrate on the subs and the anime itself at the same time because of my blind eye. I also have to wear thick glasses so this doesn't really help the case for me either. Oh well, my loss I guess.

What about Samurai Champloo? If you had watched it, did the dub play excellent part?

Of course, well my cousin showed me this anime, so when I watched it, it was dubbed. But for the most part, if an anime has an excellent english dub, I just don't feel the need to switch to sub because it already sounds great to me. I haven't watched Champloo subbed yet, but might give it a try in the future. I don't really care for dialogue heavy anime with subs because it strains the hell out of my eyes and then I get a headache. So if I do intend on watching subs, I stick to the more lightly dialogued ones as possible.

I prefer to watch old titles dubbed. Baccano, Durarara and Black Lagoon have really amazing dubs. I heard that the Steins;Gate dub is cool too but I'd rather watch the original because Mamoru Miyano is the embodiment of Okabe Rintarou.

Depends on the anime. I prefer Ghost in the Shell dubbed but it's based in Japan right so I watch it subbed. I usually watch an anime subbed first. But how can you tell when Japanese voices are good when you most probably don't speak the language?

Subbed. Japanese just sounds better, and a lot of lines that sound fine when read are actually very cringe-worthy in spoken English.

Dub. Japanese voice actors tend to overact and force everything. There's no subtlety in their acting. Not to mention the women sound like shit. It sounds like a mouse is having an orgasm. Fucking 20 year olds sound like 5 year olds.

Although anime and video games are the only things I watch dubbed. I only watch subtitles for live action films. Even there though, Japanese actors suck. They're not in the same league as American, French, or British actors. Or even Koreans. Compare Oldboy to the most Japanese live action drama films. Not even fucking close.

Shouting, grunting, squealing, and over dramatic screaming is not "true emotions". It's just that. Shouting, grunting, squealing, and over dramatic screaming.

The Japanese still use methods and styles of acting from old plays, which were always over the top, overacted, over dramatic, and incredibly unrealistic. They haven't evolved.

Those annoying high pitch sequels females make in anime. It's one of the reasons why I stopped watching Japanese porn.

Fuck even their porn is incredibly forced and fake. Not that American or European porn is any more believable, but at least some can fake an orgasm properly. I just mute Japanese porn now.

Dubbed, I usually flick onto another tab whilst watching occasionally so It's best for me to hear whats going on.

In some cases, I prefer the subbed though, as some voice actors sound horrible in English.

2) Isn't entirely horrible

else

Sub

and people who say sub is always better than dub have no idea what they are talking about, they obviously don't understand japanese and assume the voice actors are perfect lel

Well, do YOU understand Japanese perfectly? I did a very brief check of your profile and since all the vns you have played are tld ones I assume not. If we cant say they are good because we dont understand you can not say they are bad either. Honestly though, I do not need to understand a language to enjoy the voices /shrug.

Ignoring that, subs are always better than dubs in my experience. And my experience of both is in no way lacking.

Japan has only one two academy awards ever. One for Spirited Away and one for Departures. And chances are, the dubbed version of Spirited Away is what the judges watched. It shows the superiority of japanese acting.

I said, quite fucking literally 'IN MY EXPERIENCE'

In my experience, it is a fact that the subs were better than the dubs. The 'In my experience' part signified that I was talking specifically for myself. Your inability to understand this is unbelievably frustrating.

Ill try and make it simpler for you. I LIKE SUBS MORE THAN DUBS. This is A FACT. Hence why I STATED IT AS A FACT.

@Valaskjalf

Can you read 0o? Can you please quote where I said I thought you hated subs? I simply said if we can not believe they are good then you can not say they are bad either. That is not saying you did say it, it is simply pointing out you cant say it.
