| I think the most obvious example is Hourou Musuko which aired last season. It's about two students (one male, one female) who want to be seen as the opposite sex. It deals with a lot of realistic issues, it's very interesting, and the art is amazing! |

| Kuragehime's male lead is a crossdresser. He's not transgender though, he just likes dressing up as a female. Hourou Musuko as has already been recommended is very good. Despite you saying you wanted anime, I personally think the manga is much better. |

| Kampfer was good up until the end. I can't really recommend Kashimashi since I haven't finished it yet but so far so good plus it also has good reviews for the type. |

| Well...I haven't come across any anime like you described but there are a couple of shows featuring characters with guys that can change in girls, Ranma 1/2 and Tetsuwan Birdy Decode. |

| Shangri la (a transgender character plays a large role in this series and is almost in every eps. after I believe eps. 5 or 6) Tokyo Godfathers (there's a transgender individual in this and they play a large role in the show.) Oh yeah and Maria Holic (this has a guy dressed as a girl going to an all girls school) |
