Minko's voice is pretty amateurish. They should have gotten a different VA. That novelist sure is one annoying guy.

Its getting more and more interesting. The characters are well thought-of, some are counterweight to happy, open-minded, cheerful Ohana, while the others are still mysterious (like how does grandmother feel towards Ohana) and I'm sure a lot of interesting moments awaits us.

Ohana's tender, special spot, I wonder what that is ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°) , now I get it why it is the work of the century ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

Other than that, Ohana finally snap in this ep containing all the shit she had done in that inn filled with inconsiderable people, one who can't even orient new hire properly, one who is a fcking rude manager who can't even credit her workers properly, one who has a fetish of jinxing people to die, one who just rubs Ohana's wounds with salt with that statement regarding not having friends, added the fact that she takes the blame for that incident regarding the "work of the century" bullcrap.

Ohana's mother is a shit though, can't even warrant her daughter to have a proper living added with bad parenting skills, it basically reflect to her daughter's social life at this point with the mentality of not relying on others because of that crap.

Definitely LOL'd at how Ohana jinx Tohru and almost got killed, see jinxing is bad my people as Ohana said, choose your words a bit more wisely.

TLDR: the show continues to be a frustrating watch, thanks to the clash of anime comedy tropes and relatively grim environment and a general lack of subtlety, but there might be a light at the end of the tunnel, as at least Ohana is just likeable enough.

I'm starting to realize that there's something worthwhile here. The episode was still a headache, though.

With all that in mind, the frustration might just be worth it. Maybe this is all on purpose and these archetypes will be slowly unfolded and we'll learn how these two girls ended up here or why they developed these personalities. Or maybe I still haven't noticed the hidden mark of genius in all this.

While that's far off (if it even happens at all), something can already appreciate is that Ohana is making progress. First off, it seems like something broke inside of her, but it turns out she only started to remember the only thing her mother ever seems to have taught her: she can only count on herself. And so the facade from the previous episode evaporates. She doesn't hide her feelings anymore, and focuses on survival, in a way.

She attempts several ways to cope with the situation. First, she tries completing various different tasks that she hasn't learned yet, without asking first, so she messes up, naturally. Then she makes breakfast for the crew, but while everyone else is satisfied, Minko gets mad at her again. After being faced with the poor results of her work, she lashes out at Tooru, the junior chef who is constantly a jerk to Minko.

With this, she almost causes a traffic accident, and the situation gives her some clarity. She decides to stop taking shit from the two other girls, she pushes back, and asks for their cooperation in a much more assertive way than before. Essentially, she promises to take care of them and asks them to take care of her in return, in an effort to move past her lone wolf instincts and prove her abilities. In a relatively healthy work environment, this agreement between co-workers would ideally happen on the employee's first day, in a more formal fashion, but this is not one of those places, so I'll take it. At that point, the episode felt kind of nice for a moment.

I also want to express careful appreciation for the visuals. There's quite a lot of elaborate character acting, it's too bad that it's often wasted on tsundere (or just tsuntsun) antics and other anime tomfoolery I mentioned above. From its backgrounds and ambience, the inn doesn't feel quite like its own thing yet, but at least it looks like what I would assume an old fashioned Japanese inn to look like, so it looks competent. As a bonus, Ohana is slowly winning me over with the little pouts and scowls. Maybe because it gets rid of some of my own frustration when she doesn't hide hers.

The music's kind of nice, too. I noticed the leitmotif from the opening playing early in the episode, that was kind of sweet. There's a lot of gentle guitar pieces in the OST; this show could be so relaxing if it wanted to be. Oh well.

I started watching this show because I like PA Works. It seemed similar to Shirobako and Sakura Quest aesthetically. And Mari Okada is a flawed writer but a guilty pleasure of mine. Plus this was just a few years after she helmed the Toradora anime which is my favorite she's been involved in. So far I've been impressed by the animation. Some really pretty scenery porn, nice use of CG, cute consistent character designs. But the writing is kind of where its lacking.

Which is too bad because it's almost a really cool series bubbling under the surface. I like the three main girls. And I like their burgeoning uneasy friendship. Probably going to stick it out for awhile with this one just because of that. The big confrontation near the end here was kind of engaging. Different even. Okada always has so much warmth for her female characters. Even as she pours endless difficulties on them and points out their flaws. I also really liked how Ohana grows as a character in this episode. So many anime would either have her be a self absorbed cartoon in an endless pattern of self destruction. Or completely overlook her flawed behavior in favor of cute based sympathy. I don't think either of these routes are horrible. But Ohana's breakthrough with Tohru added a lot of depth that made that scene work even better for me.

So far doesn't feel like PA Works best series. By a long shot. Still pretty fun though. I just hope that cliffhanger ending isn't going where I think it's going. Not sure how I feel about that.

Ohana taking a stand and being the first to push for cooperation between the three girls was nice to see, as well as the scene with Tooru in the car, which served as a bit of development as his words about depending on people had a clear affect on her.
So far the visuals and scenery in this anime are beautiful and the soundtrack is fitting however not I'm not too keen on the dialogue.

Poor Ohana.

I like how she's trying to understand things better, like how her mother reacted by eating her least favorite food that Ohana prepared because she was angry for not coming to the day with the parents in school.

She also took initiative with Nako and Minko, she covered for the first when the mistake cleaning up the room happened, and with Minko when... she told her to die, again, don't do that! q_q, Ohana's talk with them might bring them closer and I hope that happens.

So that writer is so problematic that even grandma, who puts customers clearly first, didn't really get mad at Ohana, that cliffhanger tho, he's writing ero stuff about Ohana? Lewd!

The freeloader author definitely smells like scammer. Trying to win an award with an erotic novel where the Story takes place in an inn ? Seems suspicious.

Also curious to see how things will develop between Ohana and Minko.

It was nice to see Ohana calling out Minko and Nako in order to improve their relationship as co-workers. She's my favorite character so far.

But other than that, it was still an OK episode.

This is turning out to be pretty interesting. Ohana asking for the least favourite foods to have her revenge was pretty funny. There's great potential for subtle character development, especially with Ohana questioning her previous ideas of life.

That writer though, eww, such a creep. I guess working at an inn/hotel you get to see all kinds of customers, ones who are nice and understanding and also ones who'll see themselves as better than the staff.

Pretty decent show case of introspective (mostly) character drama, a good balance of subtle character reactions and implicit motivations, wrapped up in a well nicely put backstory with chance for a more indepth thematic exploration in the future.
Side-characters personalities are a bit generic but I hope they are used in satisfactory way in the future. Ohana is quite charming.

That cute little Ohana from the past is just too sweet to be let down by her parents, I see she's exerting much more effort

I guess she is talented in her own way in some factors and she'll be a waitress starting today, She got an issue regarding a novelist that she recently just cleaned well I hope it gets resolved

Her parents weren't that much supportive of her poor cute Ohana, Aww that pouting face of hers I can't handle it, Oh so is this the "work of art" he's been working on, talk about a creep what was that ending though.

So a hentai novelist, I see, lol. Ohana is so unpredictable but I love her way of doing things, especially of getting on the good side of people. Liked that moment a lot.

Right off the bat we start with Ohana, telling the audience about her negative unconscious belief that each time she counts on someone she will end up being hurt. That's when her limiting belief started when she was very young and her mother had not shown up to her class. So therefore Ohana grows up never relying on anyone so that she doesn't get hurt. And that's just sad. Ngl, I felt really sick to my stomach just watching this ep. And at the end it looks like the writer goes to r*pe her.WTF

Rewatching this in 2023 - older and sober than me of past years, a few things strike out: the characterization is over the top, the tropes are in-your-face jarring, and it's relatively uncomfortable to watch at times like there's something wrong with what I just watched but I can't quite put a finger on it. Maybe that's just the remnant bias of dormant memory trying to resurface as anxiety of "seen that before" or maybe there is a mismatch in the flow of scenes that can get a bit uncomfortable; oh well, not sure what to make of it. Maybe I will try and contemplate this in my next watch or while I watch the subsequent episodes.
