Finally not a "happy go around" slice of life series. I loved the first episode, totally grabbed my attention, the art is beautiful, the soundtracks are all catchy so I have no complains for now.
Ito Kanae's voice fits the character really well and I really like the freshness it has.

Amazing visuals - art, animation and character design are all excellent. This first episode made a huge impression on me and I expect greatness from this anime. I just liked it all around.

Why isn't it a "happy go around"?
Dunno, but I've been smiling during the whole episode, so it looks pretty happy to me. Gonna be a nice lighthearted fun all the way.

Awesome, awesome first episode. Beautiful art, generally pleasant but at the same time sad, and I didn't mind the voice actors too much. We're in for a wild ride.

Though I hate, hate, HATE the grandmother with a passion. One episode in and already some physical abuse. Then again, there might be some grandmothers that treat their grandchildren as workers. (My grandmother isn't like that, she's the sweet one)

Also, I think that little scene in the train (where the elderly woman gave candy and enjoyed a view with Ohana) was significant. It's in contrast to her grandmother's real personality. I also think we're going to have a lesson... Tamayura style. (How an event changes a character forever)

This is going to be an awesome series.

I love this first episode! This anime is going to be great!!

I also love the grandma! She is going to be awesome. She definitely plays the Yubaba of the series well. I expect a lot of great things from her in the future episodes.

btw, when Ohana not only asked to be hit, but took the hits without showing weakness, was I the only one who thought;

'Cool and Spicy!'

Awesome episode, but i dont think the grandma is as bad as some are making her out to be, but then again this is only the beginning of the series, i hope the rest of the episodes follow the same feeling/pace this had.

I will continue to watch this series, looks very promising.

agreed. She isn't some evil villain, she is just a relic of a previous age. An more old fashioned age. I expect later episodes will get to flesh her out much often, no doubt about it.

well, P.A. Works is probably the current best background artists in all anime producers.. and their animation is still great.. hopefully, the 26 episodes in this original anime would do it a good thing by providing more development for the characters.. this is absolutely worth the watch..

and i'm starting to really love Ohana.. her way of thinking that her life needs a dramatic twist plus her being knowledgeable of the arts of troping is so win.. and she's kyawaii..

Not a huge fan of Slice of life anime since the year after Haruhi made my stomach turn with the genre but this series seems pretty interesting. I'm into the type of anime that goes all the way with either language, morals, or gore and this one seems like it will go pretty far in at the very least morals. Don't think it will be as profane as black lagoon but thats just unrealistic to expect I suppose. 4/5 so far for me.

I really like the art style of this one. When the anime is a slice of life, that is a really important aspect of it. I hope it doesn't decrease, the quality, after the first episode.

Ohana is really cute and her seiyuu suits her incredibly well.

For first impressions, it's a very pretty anime, that's for sure. I absolutely love the character design for Ohana, and her hair reminds me of Sex Hair (forgot her name) from Amagami SS.

At the end the general storyline definitely left me wanting more. Still too early to judge how things'll happen since it's just the first episode, but I'm fairly sure Hanasaku Iroha won't disappoint me. A definite change of pace from the overly moeblob fanservice shows!

This wasn't an anime that particularly jumped out at me when looking through a preview guide, and I just downloaded it on a whim since I had some free-time. This might be a surprise hit for me for the season, and I'm excited to see what will happen next.

Good training video on bad parenting. It was tough to watch at times (mostly grandma's viciousness), but Ohana's quite the charmer and show is just pretty. Keep it up PA Works.

Excellent first episode! I didn't care too much for Ko, I'm sure Ohana can do better when she starts in at her new school as a transfer student. If you have a good enough story 26 episodes is not too long at all. (Kimi ni Todoke anyone?)

So far I love this show and that's hard for me to say after just the first episode usually. But it seems to have a unique story line compared to a lot of the recently released anime. I also loved the art and animation in this. I feel bad for Ohana and right now dislike the grandmother but I too feel like this will turn into a very touching story and there will be a sense of family between the two eventually. I can't wait to get more character development from the other employees there as well. Overall this show seems very promising and already im giving it a 7/10! Can't wait till the next episode.

That's why I like watching first episodes without reading the synopsis! It really gives me surprises :D and it's P.A. works!!! I really liked their story and art :D

No wonder why Ohana's voice so familiar XDD gotta love Elsea XDD

But why is this a Seinen? hmmm I guess I'll find it soon

Bringing the hate for her grandma and Minko aside, I don't like the look of them boys D: I'm worried for Ohana... Can't wait for the next episode

I already have a feeling that Ko will see Ohana very soon in that inn especially when he mentioned about spring break :D I want to see their development XDD

Very interesting anime on every scale, i want to see what happens next week. My guess this one will become a great hit and be very touching is every essence, sort of down because of the mom and grandma and Ko being so blunt and running off, like really...

Interesting first episode, i do wonder if she'll make up with her grandma and if we'll see any changes on how that inn is run. The next 25 eps should have a lot in store for us. Looking forward to it.

Even though its only the first episode, I already love it. The story line looks like its going to be solid and I already love the ending song. To me, it somehow gives off a Natsume Yujinchou feeling which I definitely love and enjoy. 26 episodes, I am definitely going to enjoy waiting to watch this every week. I hope in these 26 episodes, Ohana betters her relationships with everyone, especially with her grandmother.

Edit: I thought she sounded familiar. Shes voiced by Itou Kanae who also played Amu in Shugo Chara. <3

This is going to be one hell of a boring anime.......>_< While the animation and music is pretty good, I can't see the story having a climax at all. So, if i have to watch 26 episodes of girls working in a shop while being slapped and screamed at then sorry, this is not my cup of tea.

Totally agree. There is nothing interesting about these characters nor about the plot. The grandma's reactions are totally absurd. What this is going to end up being is a depressing schlep through their lives and why each of them is messed up in their own way. But I don't care. I'll watch another episode to see if it turns around, but so far I have nothing and no one to root for. This episode was quite boring.

Very good first episode, like this alot.

I probably hate her mom the most knowing how the grandma is like before hand and running off with her debt-ridden boyfriend, and the thing is Ohana doesn't even seem that mad about it but maybe she'll show it later on.

I don't mind the grandmother because she'll probably be more likable later on, same with Minchi.

I really like the main character Ohana, she always seems to always have a smile on her face no matter what happens and believes very strongly in her values. I do feel sorry for her for what she's had to deal with so far.

Overall a pretty good start.

I've got to far this anime is very refreshing.

A lot happened in this episode - Ohana having to live by herself because her mom wants to have fun with a man? That's just pathetic parenting right there.

I knew that her grand mother was going to be a bitch, but goddamn she annoys me so much.

I feel bad for Ohana. She's too innocent. It seems her tsundere like "friend" Minko is going to play a big role in the anime.

I hope it doesn't go in the generic direction of "over-privileged kid forced to work and eventually wins the hearts of the people around her." I have a feeling it will, but I'll still watch it.

Good animation and music (except for the vocal stuff)

This anime is not for some ecchi/harem/action fetish guys, it's all about drama, slice of life, a little bit of comedy and romance.

the Director is the man who made True tears, angel beats and canaan. If you have watched all 3 series, you will know how good will this Hanasaku Iroha be
After finishing the first episode, everything was perfect so far, the plot, animation, sound, characters(they have their own personality, not some stupid moe appearance).
9.5/10, looking for the next ep

Please don't post these comments like :" this kind of boring, I want some sort of ecchi scenes, nothing happen so far, etc"
too much of ecchi, harem these days. this one has potential to be a masterpiece

True Tears, Angel Beats, and Canaan are directed each by three different directors. It's the director of Canaan who worked on HanaIro. They're all produced from P.A. Works studio, though.

Sr it was my mistake, but they're all come from the same producer, they wouldn't have made this series if it hadn't had a chance to become one of the best ani this season. I have seen true tears before, not just angel beats and canaan, all of them have a quite deep story, char development. Why dont u just put your hope into this one?

Love this type of anime. Cute main character, lovely animation, and of course my favourite anime genre slice of life. It somehow reminded me of True Tears for some reason xD

I'm looking forward for the next episode. I'll probably watch until the last episode :)

Nice work, P.A. Works!
Yet again, I'm leaning to the romance part. I want to see more of Ko-chan.

I can't believe Minko is voiced by Omigawa Chiaki...

I actually don't find myself not liking any of the characters yet. Even the Grandma and Minko I think just take things more seriously than the average person, but aren't bad people.

Anyways, really liked this first ep. Am looking forward to episode 2 :D

Wow, that was...hmm. I had no expectations going in, but almost immediately, I was drawn in with love for all the characters. I loved the mother, I loved the childhood friend, and even the mother's boyfriend who got them into this mess. And most importantly, I loved Ohana. Her dynamic with all the characters was amazing, and her outlook on life was really interesting, one I immediately looked forward to seeing develop. My expectations very quickly went from non existent to high.

At the point where the train came out of the tunnel, I was just blown away by the scene. The visuals, the audio, the dialog, it all hit me in just the right ways. For a moment, I thought to myself, could this be the next Aria? By that point, I knew everything I wanted the show to be, and I started looking forward to it so much.

And then, she arrived at the hot spring. In less than a minute, the show had completely turned around. I didn't like most of the characters that were being introduced. From what I had gathered in the first part, everything just seemed so wrong. This was not at all the show I had come to expect. Yet...that's exactly what Ohana is thinking. If nothing else, it's that strong connection with the main character that'll keep me going, at least for now.

So I really have no idea where I stand with this series after the first episode. It'll probably take a few episodes to come to a conclusion. I really hope it turns out strong, but I can also see it being dropped depending on the direction and pace it takes.

PA Works has such sick animation. It's almost like the series isn't animated at all but live-action because they use so many different and unique camera angles.

This entire episode was just exposition so I will reserve my judgement till the next episode. If they can bring the same level of presentation that they brought to the background story of the characters in Angel Beats! to this anime, it could be really special.
