Count me in. I'm eager to have this back.
They managed to bring the forum search back (sort of), so it would be great to see them keep upgrading and improving this site.

If they are going to pre-compute this, they could save resources by excluding user accounts that have not been active in the last month from the calculations.

If it's to taxing for the server, how about:

Show the compatability under every persons name in forum posts. That way it would be easier to look for persons with high compatability; and if someone makes a recommendation to you you can easily see wether that person might have a similair taste as you do.

There was a script which was doing exactly this, but with time, MAL's code changed a bit and it became unusable. (at least that's the reason I give)

Here's the script: http://myanimelist.net/forum/?topicid=108565

Perhaps someone can take it back to working condition?

This is a really good idea, it's the first thing I thought when I saw it!

I second this indefinitely.

I'd love to see it done. I love MAL, I wish the admin would at least test it out. It surely would help us find people similar to us.

IIUC, the compatibility sort dealio has already been made, just disabled. Enable the option for a price?

*edit: Nevermind. It's not possible.
*edit2: Actually it is possible. Have you seen the movie Amadeus? Mozart wanted to add a ballet to the opera but the Emperor had some rule forbidding it, and everyone said no no no you can't add a ballet to the opera because they thought the emperor would say no. But then the emperor saw it and went, oh yes, yes, I made a stupid rule, it works much better if I allow it, and it ended up being a wonderful success and is currently the 6th most performed opera worldwide.

This is mostly aimed at people who want to find other users who share and rate anime/manga the same. I myself have been wondering if there are others out there who I have a 90%+ compatibility with. Currently, to find such a person requires me to dig randomly around the forums and endlessly clicking on profiles.

So what am I suggesting? A search filter for finding users based on anime/manga compatibility. There might be a need to separate anime and manga since they have their own compatibility meters. Doing this would be more dynamic. Imagine users who watch only anime -- if he/she can find another person who share similar tastes in anime AND has a manga list, it will benefit them as they can recommend each other new things.

I think this would be somewhat hard to do from a programming perspective but I believe it is beneficial to the majority on the forums. I mean, as of now the compatibility meter is only effective for those who have garner attention or take the intiative to talk to others. That percentage, I imagine, is quite small in relation to the population of users on MAL.

Think about it -- implementing a compatibility filter makes it a lot easier for people to socialize about things they like.

Sure, there are problems like subjectivity in user ratings and users lacking a significant amount of data to accurately gauge compatibility, but those are existing problems. Adding a compatibility filter would not make the problem any worse than now. Perhaps we can add another option to limit the searches to those who have watched/read a certain amount of anime/manga i.e. 20 days. User input option would be ideal.

I think it's time we made use of the compatibility meter efficiently. I'm really looking forward to finding users who I have extremely high compatibility with. I'm sure we would be able to discuss about our favorite anime/mangas in great length and with passion.

It's a great idea; I like it.

We already had one, they took it out. Check this thread, it's one made about trying to bring it back.
Though the bad thing about the system is that the only people who had good compatibility with you are the people who just started watching anime.

temporarily can use this site - https://animeadvice.me/

homepage -> advice tab -> enter your MAL Username, "check" button -> click on appear username -> "get new advice" button(in advice option select Cosine function for high compatibility) -> wait 1-2 mins -> click on pearson logo in appear advice

recommendation algorithm is not yet fully ready, so it's only beta

MyFunction better for my advices, Cosine better for compatibility(that you can see on MAL)

No it's probably never going to come back unless a lot of people want it. This site https://animeadvice.me/ is supposed to do it, but I haven't figured out how to do it.

(Sorry for my english, I do not speak very good)

It seems to me that the "compatibility search" was not available because it is too taxing for the server.
However, is it possible to activate in such a way that research is limited.
For example: A search for compatibility with only people who have seen a number of anime somewhat similar to ours.

To make it less taxing for the server.

Am I wrong?

So... I was going through the users and looking for Anime compatibility with other people. I was wondering "Why doesn't MAL have a Anime compatibility with users search bar?" This would mean finding people with the same interests as me would be much easier. Would this be a good idea?

And it's kind of useless, the people most similar to me have only watched 10 anime. Thus I have watched most or every anime they've watched making us very similar with a very high compatibility.

This was made a few months ago, it had pretty massive support but still didn't get in.

I suppose the tax on the server is just too much. I'm not well versed on server capabilities but wouldn't it be possible to implement with restrictions? Such as a limit of times per month and/or restricted to a certain timeframe, it does have kind of overwhelming support and I think even a restricted version would be very appreciated.

it could possibly be set to only factor in users that share a set amount (eg. 25+ or 50+)

There are people with 40-60 and they have like a 96% compatibility with a lot of people._.
I still hope one day that they'll bring it back^o^

Hello,
I was wondering if I could search for users with high anime compatability?
I thought it might be a good idea because I could use their anime list to find recommendations if they had similar tastes to me.

Thanks for taking the time to read!
:)

P.S. I'm quite new here so this suggestion may have been looked at before - if so, sorry (though I did read guidelines/FAQs and also searched for it).

MAL user compatibility fails miserably. You'll find those who you have low compatibility with to sometimes have extremely similar tastes, or those with high compatibilities to like entirely different shows.

I would recommend using the recommendations section of the forums, or just recs in general. Though don't rely on this too much either.

Ah... That's a little disappointing, if not expected. It seems that simple discussions will be the best choice as always! (oh no I have to actually talk to people ;-;)
I think the recommendations are also pretty good, though they often have far too superficial connections.

Thanks very much for your advice, it's much appreciated!

I was looking at some of my friends' list, and saw the compatibility was low, even though we are close friends. We share our favorites, so we have a limited list of anime that we can choose from.

I was just thinking that having a 'Most compatible users' list would be very productive. I would be able to look at their favorites, and possibly find some that I have never seen before. It would also be an easier way to get in touch with people who have similar interests.

Only negative think I can think of is creepy stalkers, but that's what the privacy settings are for aren't they?

I find that anime compatibility is not as useful as I would like. Many people are listed as having high compatibility levels, but when I check our shared anime, their scores are completely different from mine. I don't find it all that useful for seeing who likes what I like because I feel it isn't very strict about linking similar scores to compatibility level.

If this kind of search is very important to you, you might suggest a much less taxing (and probably more useful) search: one that allows you to select a single anime and search for people who gave it a similar rating (i.e. exactly the same score, no more than one point different, etc). Even if you don't agree with their reasons for giving that score, this would at least allow you to see who felt that your favourite show was about as good as you thought it was. You could do this search for a handful of shows that you feel are important, and see who consistently shows up in the list of results.

Good idea and wouldn't hurt to have.

I mean MAL has a recommendation system but 80% of the recommendations are useless with people just recommending because there are tiny similarities between two shows.

I'd love to meet someone who was over 70% compatible with me but you have to think of how people rate things too. If I really liked a show I automatically rate it a 10 regardless if art is bad or the story is generic. So even though it'd be tough finding someone who's compatible, I'd still like to try!

I think it was mentioned somewhere that they used to have this implemented, but due to heavy stress on the servers they had to remove this feature.

Regardless, it would be just simply amazing to find people with the same kind of taste as yourself to chat and discuss various topics with.
Maybe some kind of a more simple way around could be made?

Edit: I see some fan-made projects were put in action on the matter around, but haven't reached out to this thread. In any way, an official in-put would be extremely wanted and should at least be noted.
