yeh it would be pretty awesome, imagine finding someone that watched the exact same things as you:P then again the ratings being the same might be a bit like never gonna happen...

There was a function which enabled you to see which users you had the highest compatibility with but it was removed due to the toll it took on the site.

According to the FAQ Found here: http://myanimelist.net/modules.php?go=faq#canwehave

We used to have this option, but it was too taxing for the server. This may come back in the future.

If that's what you are asking for..
Not sure about the sorting of the list though.

Is there a way to search users by their relative anime compatibility to you?

Would be an awesome feature

* should be moved to suggestions *

From the FAQ, seems like MAL had such a feature, but it had to be disabled because it used too many resources. Alternatively, there is a GreaseMoney script here, which doesn't work anymore, probably because of changed MAL coding... so right now...there isn't any way... unless someone gives a refresh to that greasemonkey script.

MAL seriously needs to be more accepting of donations. If donating meant a less limited site, I'd donate. We can't even see which forum posts we made.

MAL servers are maintained (and owned) by Crave Online. Even if something like a donation feature existed, there wouldn't make much difference. The feature (compatibility search) would be very costly indeed though (not talking about money now). Imagine something like calculating the time of the anime you spent, used by tens of users at the same time, used to search through hundreds of thousands of users. Not awesome really...
I agree that MAL is limited, but not because of lack of funds... it's because the lack of people needed to improve it.

I find it interesting that free dating sites are capable of such a feat

Well, I did say that MAL is lacking manpower. Also, I've never been to a dating site, so I don't know how one works, but still, I don't think it can be compared with MAL's complexity. (also to mention that I'm not a specialist, but i do intend to be one one day)

We don't even know if money really is the problem. For all we know Crave may be swimming in money but they don't care to invest any of them on improving MAL.
What Mal needs is a new owner that actually cares about this site.

*sigh*

If this is ever implemented, it would be by far the best feature on MAL. Imagine how many people you'd find with similar tastes. And how quickly, too.

I remember having asked or searched answers as to this feature, and yeah, it can't be done at the moment, I don't even know if it would be possible even with donations, to be honest.

I once used the user script, but I removed it because every people who had a 90%+ compatibility with me were in fact people with ~50 completed entries, explaining the extreme rate and not very interesting.

OH you have a script! Isnt it possible to maybe add a filter to the script that only allows people with at least 100 completed entries?

I have a hard time finding an anime or manga to my taste. It would be very helpful if I could find fellow users of similar taste to share anime recommendations with!
Perhaps using the Find User advanced search option, a compatibility ratio could be added.
Unknown, Low, Low-Medium, Medium, Medium-High, High, Very high..or something similar.

It was too taxing for the server and had to be removed.

The FAQ says:

Can we have...?
- A way to find users most compatible with us?
We used to have this option, but it was too taxing for the server. This may come back in the future.

May I ask how it was so taxing - from a theoretical standpoint, if you have enough memory it shouldn't be too hard of a lookup.

It also says that it may come back in the future, and in the bottom it said "Note: Keep in mind that with overwhelming support most of the above rejected suggestions would have a chance at being implemented. However, being on this list means that they have been turned down numerous times before." Means that if you get a big number of people on this site to want it then it could come back earlier.

I personally would go either way, because whenever I have a high compatibility with someone, it's because they have only watched like 20 anime and I have watched most of them.

AH! good thing I found your post, I was about to write the same exact thing! But it would be good if it had something like the animenewsnetwork search feature has. When you search for anime by more than one genre(lets use 4 different genres for example), ANN lists all of the series that have all 4 genres you included first, and then 3 then 2... you know how it goes. To show you what i mean, when i searched for an anime with "action", "adventure, "comedy", and "drama" on ANN, this was the result:
http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/search/genreresults?w=series&w=movies&from=&to=&lic=&a=AA&a=OC&a=TA&a=MA&g=action%2FA&g=adventure%2FA&g=comedy&g=drama%2FD&o=rating

So my thoughts are, if there's a button next to your "Favorites" list to help you find users with the same favorites as you, it would be set up like so. Im not so sure why the original feature was taxing the server so much but I wouldnt think this kind of search feature would put too much more strain on it. Anyway, it would just be very convenient if this were to become an addition to MAL.

Well since your compat with another user depends on cross reference of your own list and theirs it's a much more CPU intensive request than just fetching a page, etc. When you go to someone's list it only calculates the compat between you and them, which is a single-execution of the routine and thus tolerable, but if you were to search for compat then every user in the system would have to be compared to you individually. That increases the complexity exponentially.

Check out http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Computational_complexity_theory

Anyway, that being said this kind of thing is still possible if dedicated hardware is purchased, installed and maintained (lots of money) to keep a pre-computed list more or less up-to-date. If you used a continual task-queue and some clever algorithms the dedicated system could continually recalculate the list and probably have a maximum correctness delay of a couple hours or so.

It's just not really justifiable to have that kind of system working on this kind of small feature, though. Not in financial terms. I mean if someone wants to do it externally I believe there's an API, but they'd want to work closely with MAL to make sure they don't eat up all the resources by eternally requesting data records.

There are a lot of users with 70~90% compatibility who loves shows that I hate and vice versa.
Machines has no feelings, so they can't analyze like humans. Compatibility system is useless.

I like that feature come back too. It's hard to look over an user who has same taste as me. If I could know anyone with this feature we'll become friends and discuss about our favorite anime/manga together.

Add a compatibility user search for both anime and mangas?

I mean like, searching for users with atleast 80% compatibility with you. It might be a good way to search for more animes and manga, also a way to find friends who like the same animes as you.

its not only Hardware but sometimes an optimize Programming Language will solve the problem, im no programmer but may i ask is MAL running on virtual machine languages like java or ruby or python? because their is a new programming language called Go by Google - http://golang.org/ that is meant for programming web servers and that its compiled to machine code so its runs as fast as C or C++

About the complexity of performing a compatibility search, it certainly can be implementer cheaply but computationally and money-wise. You don't need a new server to keep enough precomputed information to show each user two other users highly compatible with him/her. Then you can update that daily, finding two new users for each user. You need some precautions not to start repeating quickly, but that's not expensive.

If you want recommendations for anime might I recommend going here, if you say what you are looking for (easier if you mention a genre however not necessary) you will probably get quite a few helpful recommendations. It would further increase the chance of getting recommendations that you would enjoy if you list anime you liked, reasons as to why you liked them, plot elements you like, character types you like (or hate) and things like that. Of course while their are alot of anime out their it is important to bear in mind that it is not infinite, if you ask for something too specific chances are their won't be anything like it.
