Not surprising at all, since i am turning 18 (adult) this month myself ^^
Though...i only watch the Anime XD

But really i hope people would stop bashing other shows/manga without even reading/watching them at all and even if you don't like the show please keep your shit to yourself.

- Thank you.

I first tried reading the manga when I was 16. Didn't liked it back then. Now I'm a bit older (just a bit, mind you...I'm not that old) and I kinda appreciate it more. Not to the point of it making it my favorite, but to the point where I can understand why a lot (and I do mean a LOT) of people like it...

Maybe a lot of older readers understand and appreciate the story more because of maturity...

But seriously if you consider that most people started reading for a while now (like 10 years or more), people even if they were 10 back then they are 20 now so it's only normal that most readers are adults and I kinda find it not that surprising.

which is incorrect..

normal people dont start reading manga at 10 years old... that would be 5% or less..
plus the popularity of the manga wasn't at the beginning..

it started to be popular later after 20 volumes or so..

I can't speak for the western countries but in Asia, like Taiwan, Singapore, Hong Kong, it is not an uncommon culture for boys as young as 10 to read manga. I am one living example and I know plenty of guys that fall into that category. The difference is most of them drop manga/anime as they grew older , well, probably because of quarter-life crisis.

Agree with the popularity went up after 20+ volumes though.

That is actually a misconception. I remember One Piece topping the weekly reader charts of WSJ even back in 1999, I even have a scan of such a chart flying around somewhre on my harddrive. Dunno if I can find it that fast, though.

Why wouldn't someone begin to read manga at 10 years old?
The graphic is based on japan readers. Why a 10 years old kid wouldn't start reading a manga if it's available to him? Spacialy if it's a shonen manga, in a magazine supposedly directed to kids.
It's like saying that no normal 10 years old child reads spider-man or something like that.

this just shows how ignorant some bitches are and how Trolls are born..

on ALL entire 600 chapters only ONE training arc was ( and that also skipped)
only 2 powerups ( not like bleach, over 5 or 6 i dont even remember )
and the NAKAMA thing was only at the beginning..

so stop trolling and stop provoking us..

i dont even understand why little kids who DIDNT even read the show are writing stuff on forums?

I rarely talk about One Piece, but....

Like everyone has been saying, if you have a manga that has been running for 13+ years, yeah eventually people grow up.

Also, who cares that 88% of One Piece readers are adults, is this meant to validate anything???....NO

Every manga/anime has different taste to different people, not every kid will like shounen and not every adult will like Seinen.

That's what I felt reading through this thread.

I'm One Piece fan (since I'm Korean), but its genre will ALWAYS be SHONEN, but never SEINEN. However, it doesn't mean it cannot appeal to adult more. Simple as that.

Beside, one piece is more of Japan's 'national manga' right next to dragon ball and Fist to star. Nothing can beat those three anyway. Even though Naruto is more popular in western kiddo fanbase, major buying power and critics will always be strictly inside Japan community.

This means that even adults can't be bored with this manga.

Over 13 years and the popularity is growing which means the manga still kicks ass, and is interested enough (record after record)
Ofc it does not mean it's a Seinin, it's Just the only ongoin shounen that doesn't disappoint at the moment...

This makes sense. It explains why OP always tops the sales. The buying power of adults >>> buying power of children and teenagers

I beg to differ. It's Japan we are talking about, the culture of reading comics/manga is entirely different and is certainly not a good object for over-simplifications. There are also statistics of Top 10 Manga through various age groups showing that all kinds of manga can be popular. Blaming it on the demographic alone is biased reasoning.

But you cannot deny that it may have been a contributing factor.

Did I ever say that it was the only factor? Nitpicking on other people's comment is good but when you start to think everyone else is an idiot and you are the only smart one.... it won't get you far in a discussion.... Not everyone is as stupid and simple-minded as you think...

This news is not surprising at all. As one person here mentioned, most readers were in their teens when they first started and have continued to read to this day; I've seen people in my college in their 30-40s reading One Piece.

However, there is more reasoning than the age. Think about the number of chapters One Piece has, over 600 at present. Unlike Detective Conan, the One Piece story is sequential and continual, thus people would need a lot of time to catch up, and considering everyday Japanese (not talking about otakus, but those that read manga occasionally) don't have much time due to their personal lives and school, this goal isn't very realistic.

It may seem silly that so many adults are reading a series thats known to be "childish", but hey, my mom still watches and enjoys cartoons and animated films intended for kids, and shes over 40.

I did admit that One Piece is undeniably shonen, but it definitely isn't childish as I read along. Underlying themes and dramas are sometimes very dark and just overwhelmingly well constructed to just put it into the American cartoon category.

Thats why I put "childish" in quotes, as I was quoting the common, majority view of the series by those who aren't familiar with OP. =P

I'm fully aware of the mature adult themes of the series.

You would have to be really addicted to continue pursuing an anime/manga for more than a decade, otherwise it must have sucked or become uninteresting. It's not because One Piece is a long-running series that garnered it viewers/readers a lot older from the target audience. I'd say it's its raw awesomeness.

I was intimidated too, until after much pressure from a friend of mine to check it out and I was running out of stuff to read at my local library back in early '09.

....Flew through all 55-ish volumes that where out at the time in the time span of 4-5 months. 8D

Ever sense I've caught up, I've been following the weekly releases since.
