More than half of my list is R and R+ (some of them I don't even know why they're rated R...)
Good R-rated ones:
Phantom: Requiem for the Phantom (excellent show, except for like the last minute of it)
Welcome to the NHK
Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex
Bakemonogatari (I love the art style)

Take a look at any of the following. All require a degree of maturity to truly appreciate.

-animeS - The plural of anime is anime. More than one deer is still deer. There is no damn "s".
-epic |ˈepik| noun•a work portraying heroic deeds/adventures covering an long period of time - adjective • heroic/grand in scale or character

There's a lot and I'm not sure why anyone would ask for something so general. I'm too lazy to list so I will just quote what I think is the best here so far..

Well.
Thank you to all who have been contributing since the 1st post.

I have watched a large amount of great Anime since starting this thread.
Following the same guidelines.
Are there any recommendations for great shows in the last 3 years.
I would put *Shingeki no Kyojin* as an example. It was very enjoyable can't wait for season 2.

Glad to see the thread is still building out some more great recommendations. Was hoping we can limit it from now on to recent Anime as requested before. Trying to get to a point where Anime must have only aired in the last 5 years. Thanks for participating.

Those ratings are just made up. And it would make more sense to use TV ratings (like TV MA) than movie ratings.
"My only agenda is to eviscerate any who might try to rule over and control me"- Sousuke Aizen

"Maybe, just maybe, there is no purpose in life... but if you linger a while longer in this world, you might discover something of value in it"- Orochimaru

"All men are not created equal... both in birth and in upbringing, in sheer scope of ability, every human is inherently different"- Charles zi Britannia

We are the Contra Mundi. We serve the great inimical Goddess who in her own time will destroy the world. Tremble, reprobates, in fear of her pitiless gaze.

I agree with the rating system not being perfect, but i am trying to keep it at MA status for the shows or if not atleast rated for it.
