According to Mainichi news, the number of the exhibitors of Tokyo International Anime Fair (TAF) 2011 will be 153, down 40% from 244 a year earlier. 117 exhibition booths were canceled and the decrease in the income is expected to be 110 million yen ($1 = 83 yen). Some of the exhibitors are considering partial withdrawal from the TAF because of the boycott by the major manga publishers and the expected decline in the number of visitors.

I'm surprised they haven't canceled the event. The attendance is going to be pathetic since most of the big names pulled out.

Looks like the boycott was successful in crippling the TAF, at least. With only 153 exhibitions, this will be the 3rd smallest TAF since it's founding - the smallest and second smallest being in it's first two years.

It's also about a month too late to "unboycott" the TAF, so at this point it's basically too late for the 2011 TAF.

Something isn't right... For some reason that's how I felt.
On TV, there was a match between two teams I had never heard of before, but for some reason I felt compelled to cheer for the loosing team. There's when I got the weird feeling that haruhi would--

Oh yeah, isn't this like the 10th time I read this "news".

I am quite pleased by the publishers and producers that completely boycotted the event. Will it have an effect on the ridiculous law that was passed recently? I can only hope so.

Have they not learnt anything from the French Revolution? Pissing off so many publishers cannot lead to a pleasant end. I can only hope that it doesn't lead to actual bloodshed

Not really, they just realized that with all the big name and popular manga out of the equation that not nearly as many people would attend the TAF as they hoped, so they're cutting back on the size of their exhibits, to tailor to the new, smaller, crowd.

So either the industry dies and Japan takes a huge economic blow, or they get their artistic freedom back. I know which one I am hoping for.

If the industry dies we'll all have to get new hobbies and unless you only like FPS, don't expect gaming to hold you over much as if it comes from Japan, it may be banned. Not to mention the extreme loss of revenue that can never be recovered for 50 years plus if ever. Also, the loss of international curiosity and support that'll never recover.

There really needs to be at least a 70% exhibitor loss before Summer then Ishihara will be under too much pressure and drop this bill entirely.

Because canceling and making NO money is a brilliant idea.

Might be a stupid question but......is Ishihara really so blind that he won't see the negative effects that this might produce on Japan? or is he living in his own dream world or something?

God, I hope this will happen. Getting a huge loss in one year is definitely worth it to revive the industry (Well, it's not like it's dead). But 40% gone now makes it seem possible for 70% before the summer >:3

He's not only blind, but he's living in this dream world, that he has governors' seat forever and otakus are gone from the world.

I'm still not convinced that the loss will be enough to pressure anything. I don't know what percent of Japan's GDP the anime industry accounts for, but I'm under the impression that it's 1% or lower. If the industry does die, wouldn't the effect be so small that it's insignificant?

That's why I'm gonna continue being pessimistic until something bigger happens.
