Aren't usually demon those who offer you power for something else? Like your soul?
Kyubey and Mami were suspicious from the 1 episode: they keep telling Madoka how risky being a Mahou Shojou is,but always try to convince them to join. Probably Mami was alone, and kyubey is happy with another ''pawns''....

MAMI!!!!

BTW, this was planned by the liitle POS animal. He told Mami to "take her time", knowing it would hatch. At least that's what I think.

Damn. Damn. Damn, people, I said damn. Wow, Madoka is already leaving a strong impression on me, not hesitating to kill a character without mercy or an epic death. But it's ok, there's still hope that Madoka will revive Mami in order to become a magical girl. Actually, no, it's not ok, give me back Mami right now. Oh, and I also believe that Kyubei is the big bad and Akemi is the jerk with a heart of gold. Mami was kinda suspicious at first, but you can't not feel sorry for her after this episode.

After all, the one who is supposed to be the main character is Madoka, though it looked like "Puella Magi Mami Magica".

Well, Mami is one of the five main characters, so I don't think they're done with her.
But I hope she won't be just simply resurrected - this would be disappointing.

I didn't expect they'd kill off Mami so quickly. Poor girl got beheaded by a freaking jack-in-a-box! ;_;

Great visuals once again. Really creepy dimensions they create in this series.
I also thinks Kyubei is hiding something. He keeps on pushing them to make a contract, so there must be something for him to get out of it. He also said Madoka had one of the biggest gems he had ever seen.

Anyways, very anticipating. Looking forward to the next one.

Oh shit. Why Mami?! Just when I liked her you... ;A;

If she'll be resurrected, I'll be completely disappointed. If she simply goes back next episode, our grief today would be meaningless. And that Kyubei, I think he gets a big benefit when someone becomes a Mahou Shoujo. He didn't even bow his head for Mami... Actually-evil furball.

Tbh , I was sure Mami would die in this episode . Call it premonition , call it instinct , I just knew she would . I thought that would make the biggest impact after getting so close and especially after Mami got so happy that she wasn't alone . When she got happy I was 100% something bad would happen and it did ! My anime instincts never fail me /o/ Though it was kinda sad but since I knew it was coming , it didn't affect me much =/

If Madoka wishes for Mamis revival it will prolly end up in a horrible outcome.
Either she returns as something dark like a witch and gets her ass beaten by one of the girls or someone else has to die for her. In Goethes Faust homunculi are made out of special lifeblood, i quess someone has to provide that. :D

The cake is a lie! Don't sell your soul for it Madoka!

Mami will probably get resurrected by Madoka's wish. Fullmetal Alchemist proved that you can't bring back the dead without consequences, let's see how it plays out in this show.

Really loving this show's dark atmosphere hidden under the deceivingly cute and fluffy packaging.

I predict that Madoka wishes Mami back, but remember what Mami said to Sayaka. If you make a wish that is supposed to make someone else happy, make damn sure you word it properly or the wish might not turn out the way you want.

So my guess is Madoka is naive and just says she wishes for Mami to come back to life, and Kyubey grants it, but Mami comes back as a witch or just not as herself any more in some way or another.

But yeah, uh, I'm shaken. I already knew that this wasn't going to be Nanoha style mahou shoujo, but apparently my body was not prepared.

My poor, dear, sweet Miyako.

Err, Mami. Miyako lives on!

Wow it startled me what happened to Mami-san

Will Madoka still choose to be maho? I think so but man this took her hard to see what happened right in front of her eyes.

So I finally start feeling something other than 'meh' for a character in this, and then... that. How upsetting. ;_;

Why do I have a horrible feeling that Mami's advice about wording wishes for other people carefully will have something to do with it?

If she does revive Mami... there's no way in hell that it would end up being a good thing. My money is that she'd either become a witch, or turn evil, or at the very least, lose her memories.

whoa, that was intense. This seals it, it's NOT something kids should watch. Show this to your little ones and you'll have stained bedsheets in the morning.

I knew mami was in for a beating, but after watching nanoha, I thought "beating" meant "having to rest a few days in hospital".

Now, with mami's head nomnom'ed off, there's only 3 things that could happen:

1) worst case
Madoka wishes her back and all is fine and dandy again. Would feel too much like DBZ where the portal between this world and the afterlife has revolving doors. Would devastate my opinion of this anime.

2) good1
Madoka wishes her back, but something goes wrong, showing that wishes should neverever be spoken out loud without serious thought and saying it the right way. Djinni and the likes have a tendency to creatively misunderstand wishes if possible.

3) good2
she stays gone. As much as I like Mami and her badass muskets, this would emphasis the fact that "dead is dead is dead"
I want Rambo in a mecha-suit with a laser-chainsaw gun that fires nuclear warheads, fighting the love-child of Predator, Alien, a group of Bangladeshi terrorists, and Satan. (Actually that would be a pretty sick show) - StopDropAndBowl

Okay okay okay... So I know everyone loved Mami, and I might get some hate reactions but...

Am I the only who laughed when after all the drama ensued, Kyube still had his smile? >_>

In any case, this anime was pretty meh for me until now. Mami's death, something I find rather cruel despite not caring about her much, has sparked my interest in this anime. Hoping for some darker stuff.

Wow, Mami's death was totally unexpected. It is the first time that I see the death of a magical girl in a mahou-shoujo. Nanoha too, had dark themes, not this kind of death.

But like others think, I believe she will be resurrected. However, I hope she will return as a witch or something... I'd like to see her in a psycho mode.

Im curious as to why you think shes not dead? Theres plenty of evidence to support she died.

1. after the ribbon of her holding Homura in place dissolved you see her body wriggle then fall from the monsters mouth and for a split second you see her headless body fall. thats pretty dead to me.

2. Once the monster was killed by Homura a broken teacup with blood coming out of it was shown. Im pretty sure that was an analogy of her body.

3. when they left the maze of the witch Mami wasn't with them.

So why do you think shes not dead? If you give a good reason though that would be cool cause I kinda liked Mami kinda didn't.

Wow, I have not felt this sick to my stomach since School Days. This was definitely the shock/tragedy that care-free Madoka needs to make a decision. I just hope they don't take the DBZ route. But if they do, hope they make sure they have proper repercussions.

It was a very shocking episode..
Of all the type of climatic scenes why do they need to kill of Mami? She's a main character right? along with the previous posts. I wish Madoka will wish for Mami to get back. We already know that Madoka idolized her so much so we need to pray that it will be the real decision she will make.

Its so depressing yet anticipating and awesome. SHAFT never failed on making us get bored with their plot and design style..

Awesome.
Kyubey is really creepy sly bitch. It's rather obvious that he set up the witch there and got Mami killed (?) but i was pretty sure at least Madoka would become Puella Magi in this episode, that was only at first though. I also hope for some plot twists, since the story seems predictable, too predictable for Gen's work, so i'm actually pretty sure we'll get some plot twist to prove it's not as simple as that. As for Mami, i'd i agree with seishi-sama. If you ask why then the reasons he mentioned are more than enough for me, meaning:

I did watch until the very end, but there are plenty of explanations for hearing her speaking that make more sense to me than her surviving having her head bitten off.
I'll give you your second point, especially keeping in mind the conversation about being careful what you wish for and how it's worded, but as for the third, I don't think it's staged; or at least, Mami wasn't involved in planning it. She seemed genuinely shocked by what was going on, and maybe it's just because I like her, but I don't think she's intentionally doing anything evil. It seems to me that she trusts Kyubei's choices and does as he says, but doesn't realise any more sinister intentions he might have.

The third option you mentioned is the one that I was suggesting in an earlier post. It certainly would be a very interesting development.

Or it could be all misdirection again and that really was the end of Mami. In either case, the writer is doing an excellent job at keeping the viewers guessing. This show is pure speculation fuel.

Just like how everyone suspects Kyubey has evil intentions hidden in that never-changing expression on his face, there's probably more to Homura than we know, which was hinted in the very first episode when she is present in Madoka's dream.

In reply to

Ryansaotome and Xeo: I have finished watching, analysing and collecting my thoughts just minutes ago, and I am glad that someone else managed to catch that screenshot showing cruxified beheaded people. This hints at what Mani gets as a treatment from that witch, charlotte. Also, Yumekichi11 showed the screenshot of the cup breaking, which symbolise the passing of Mani. (At least this show is not very abstract like ef). Pretty comfrims that Mani is out of the equation, to put it very very nicely.
Yumekichi11: Lol, the decapiated heads showed neatly how she is treated. And lol, she was careless. Remember the "mistake" that Threasa made in the Claymore anime (assuming that you watched it; I read the manga). Also, it is easier to see things from a third person perpective or in retrospect. In the anime, i suspect that both have a deep emmitty towards each other. So when distrust happens, the result will happen and then the outcome.
And in reply to one of your spoilers, I also wonder why they choose the medical + food theme. They do not juxtapose with each other naturally. Also, I have halfway through another german literature that has some reference to Faust; It is called The Steppenwolf. And in that book, the world that Steppenwolf describes is just like what you are mentioning, an introspection of yourself. And I will start reading the Goethe's Faust by the next week or so. I have the nagging feeling that those shaft guys have analysed that story in detail and have twisted it in such a way that we could not draw any direct conclusion piror to it. As a troll msg 4fun: "Yes, Japanese guys learn German literature. Trollers should be ashamed of themselves"
To be frank, I do not know much about the symbol either. It looks like a combination of the "sweet" face and a mouse body. No reference either. I am a chinese, brought up via chinese culture, so my knowledge of japanese culture is limited as result.
And yes, it is much more scary than the second episode, as much as it is cuter.
Endtime: Ahh, so you have translated it for all of forum users, thanks for the effort. Why the name Charlotte? I believe that it has no major significance. Charlotte in german means free man, which does not give any hints at all. A google search of that name revealed insignificant matches at all. I would encourage you, to read that thick book soon, as what i have mentioned above. I have a feeling that those Shaft guys knew what are they referencing to.
Charliehsv: I can't deny that your statement makes sense on the superfical; in fact, those familar with the story will draw a similar conclusion with you (this is what i also suspected at first), but on the account that I have not started reading that book (I only read the summary), i will put a question mark on that one. However, I have a nagging feeling that there is more to that. I will conclude the validity of your statement once i have finished that book. An unlearned man is not qualified to speak, right?
Just as a added note, remember the brief screenshot with the cruxified beheaded men with symbols of the cross? It has connections to what you are saying as well; she will be killed, while she is in a elated mood. I dont think it has much to do with religion through, to clarify.
Grummel: Ahh, from the second part of Faust, after the tradegy of Grestchen right? Unfortunately, as much as this is a fact, it does not justify your hypothesis. It has no direct references.

Oh yeah, just as a note: the japanese words that you saw in the illusion world, it can be read in chinese and it is a direct translation for operating theatre. Why the anime protray a caged door with the witch egg inside and the fork around it?
Also, the numbers that most of you should have noticed; does anyone have any idea what is it about? So far, I have not gathered any materials about the significance of the numbers.

Just as a reference:

Anime time Number from left to right
12:03 5391
12:06 141
12:09 142
12:10 14
13:19 143
13:24 234

Also, is anyone fluent in german here? Translate this please, (Google translate is a pain to use):

http://d2.myfreefilehosting.com/d2/13.23.jpg

Edit: Expired link; does not matter; refer to next page.

And the very important question out of my many questions: What is that magic in the world of puella magi madoka magica? As far as I am concerned, certain screenshots disproved my illusion theory. Now i am thinking of it as a magical dimension (proably a 2.5d dimension). And i am not going to bring the concept of time; it is areadly confusing enough.

Hopefully, the few gentlemens at /a/ will manage to deduce some more intresting stuff. I do respect them for their sucessful attempts (through the words are just coded with a simple subsitution clipher) at breaking the code.

Edit: Damm mother hubbard of the internet. First TF2 Discriminates mini sentries, then internet discriminates my com, and incriminates lagging. Also, adding screenshot.

Half way trough the episode I was thinking "it would be nice if Mami dies soon". And than it really happened... and it was good, just the way I hoped it would be. The whole irony of the situation was too much, I laughed. Great anime so far.

I am also laughing at people who actually thought this will be regular magical girl anime.

I will put aside my very own principles for now (I am going to really myself for it)

It seems you need to make the wish before becoming a magical girl. So if you wished for infinite wishes, you would never be able to become a magical girl... which would make you unable to make that wish, as you will necessarily renege on your part of the contract.

No idea if Urobuti thought of this at all, but the infinite wish loop is such an old, tired, dead, and fucking uninteresting idea which should have died long before Pun-pun and wish economy bullshit happened, so I might as well lay in a, for once, reasonable veto past "that wish won't be granted because that would be hax".

Edit: Expired link; does not matter; refer to next page.

Ich liebe Käse. = I love cheese
Ich will nur Käse. = I only want cheese.
Egg Be nirgends den Käse. = (Egg Be=no german) nowhere the cheese.

Eh? The last sentence seems strange.
What is the context of cheese through? If you equate it to magical girl...it does not make sense here.
Nvm, what is more important is why the theme food and hospital is choosen.
I hate myself. That is my philosophy.

Mami.... ;_;

I hope she's actually dead though. Magical girl deconstruction confirmed.

Kyubey is such a shady asshole, but honestly I don't trust anyone at this point.

Kaijura.... I NEED OST NAO.

At that point, it is still not that clear. Wait till all the episodes have finished airing, then we analyse it from the decontrustionist viewpoint.
Btw, talking about speculative deconstruction, I think it does not hurt for readers to read this post, if you are not aware of its existance:

Going to sleep, hope to see some analytical viewpoints towards this episode.
