THIS IS AN ANIME ONLY DISCUSSION POST. DO NOT DISCUSS THE MANGA BEYOND THIS EPISODE.
----------------------------------------
I was expecting Grillpalzer and Knapfstein to betray Reuental but they never got the chance. It's a bit too late for Knapfstein but that's what happens at the wrong end of a gamble. I didn't expect the battle to last so long but it looks like all that's needed is one final push next episode.

...even a saint needs a soldier to do the dirty work.

Poor Grillpalzer couldn't make up his mind when to doublecross Reuental which led up to Knapfstein to die and his fleet to get almost pulverized. I gotta hand it to Bittenfeld, he just charges in like a wild boar but manages to survive everytime till now. It's not something that usually works, but eh.

Also, a person's got to give to Wahlen. He lost his arm when he went to Earth and then lost his prosthetic one after 2 direct hits, just how unlucky that guy is, but still manages to survive. I guess it's things like there that make me care about supporting characters like Lutz and Wahlen.

Wahlen has bad luck... or should I say good luck?

Grillpalzer is too loser to make decisions. He got himself in something he can't handle....

Grillpaltzer's mouth sure wrote a check his ass couldn't cash. He didn''t fully take into account what would be possible when fighting Wolfgang's forces.

Reuenthal has been doing well against Wolfgang so far without having any particularly notable suboardinates under his wing. But as he himself admitted, Reuenthal is feeling some of the similar circumstances Yang Wenli faced in his final battle on Iserlohn. Without any backup, Reuenthal will eventually lose to attrition and have to face Reinhard.

Well, Grillpalzer definitely went way over his head and now hes paying the bill. But this episode was really great, definitely one of the best battles in the series. Wahlen and Bittenfeld are really two unkillable guys. Nobody survived more critical situations than those two.

As usual, the battle was really realistic and fitted each admiral's character. Wahlen was great, and Julian proved he can take sensible decisions on his own. With Mecklinger coming from Iserlohn, Reuenthal is doomed.

This war seems so futile, I still can't believe Reuental would have done it. The previous civil war was about overthrowing the old dynasty, then there was the war against Alliance which also was about the type of government. But this one seems more about Reuental's personal pride. How many million people died in this battle as a result? Yes, maybe Oberstein had some schemes, maybe Reinhard wants battles to feel glorious. But is that a good reason to have millions of soldiers killed in battle? Are they trying to say that autocracy inevitably leads to such civil wars in which the ordinary people suffer? But they're not even showing civilians or even regular soldiers anymore, the dead are just numbers and all we see is ships exploding. Oh well, more widows for Poplan to woo.

Incidentally, I never noticed before how phallic the Imperial ships look.

Why don't they just attack Reuenthal en masse? I mean . . . The whole strategy to rush them clearly had failed in whatever it was trying to do, so just back off and wait till their numbers greatly outnumber those of Reuenthal's . . . That would easily be the best course of action.

This is precisely the reasoning why I'm not enjoying this arc. The fuel for the conflict seems ridiculous.

That was my favourite battle in a long time. It showcased more tactics and leadership than the others that were propelled by incompetence. It actually makes Reuental's work seem more cut out for him than most of Yang's battles.

Great battle, no stupid commanders and tactics. Just pure awesomeness between Reuental and Mittermeyer.

Those two admirals got what they deserved!

It's a shame that Reuental was stuck with them though.

Reuenthal ended up being a traitor for childish reason, waging a meaningless battle using millions of soldiers, all because of his ego and lifelong unrest. Well he's a character to be remembered for sure.
On the other hand I was sooo glad Wahlen didn't die. I think I pretty much like all Reinhard's subordinates, even Oberstein, and of course Reuenthal. This whole battle saddens me and I hope if anyone's gonna die, please just make it Reuenthal alone since it's inevitable anyway. Or is it?

great episode, it showed the military competence of Reuental and Mittermeyer but also the other admirals. It looks like Mittermeyer was too fast to let the reinhard loyal forces carry out the plan.
Its a bit sad to see people dying because Reuental was too proud to just tell reinhard what happened. Like Mittermeyer said he is indeed drunken by bloodlust. I hope we wont see more of Reinhards loyal subject die. After all even Reuental sub commanders think they are fighting for their kaiser.
I really really dont want Mittermeyer to die. He is just to good of a man.

PS: Episodes without alliance bullshit are the best in my opinion. Also considering what we saw so far about Iserlohn, any fleet could just pass by it without taking any damage. But dont tell them that, would make the rebel scum useless.

RIP Knapfstein. You idiot! Grillpalzer's stupid plan just got his friend killed.

I was so sad when it looked like Wahlen was next to go. So glad he survived. I thought Bittenfeld might bite it too, but he lives on for now.

Yeah Reuental is an idiot, but Reinhard wanted this too. But Reuental should have chosen his type to strike better. He's never going to win this fight. I still think he will kill his best friend though.

Power rankings
1) Empire. Will win this battle, but will likely lose two of their three best tactical masterminds doing it.
2) Julian
3) Rubinski
4) Earth Cult
6) Goldenbaums
7) Reuental. I've put him last because he's really not long for this world.

Funniest part of the episode was Reuenthal's misunderstanding with the coffee boy.

It truly feels like Reuental is fighting well aware that he will lose. Mittemeyer's rage is too much for the poor man to handle.

I'll miss my man Oskar von Reuenthal.
