Small things that ruin an otherwise great series

I'm sure we can all agree that Gurren Lagann is something special in the anime world. It simultaniously parodies robot shows from pervious eras, follows the theme of the 'sprial' throughout its duration (getting bigger, dna, crushing one oppression - beastment - then another oppression - antispirals), provides a counter to the dystopian futures for humanity in other sci-fi and in a way gives a big 'f-you' to the standard 'hero's journey' path. Also the music was bloody fantastic too.
Its a fantastic show and whether intentional or not it can be interpreted in many ways.
Of course many on this forum have done similar things too. Thats great. You guys are awesome.
But for me there are a few things that ruin this otherwise great show. At first it'll sound like nit-picking but please bear with me - I'm not trolling, I'm simply trying to find out if others agree and would like to hear your thoughts and opinions regardless.
1) Immature/childish breast jokes/Ecchi
Now I do enjoy some fanservice in lesser/dummer shows but it is completely misplaced here. This show needs to be seen by many but it will fall at this first hurdle. It deserves academic literary analysis but it will be laughed at before it gets the chance to strut its stuff to any academic.
I'm probably in the minority here but I like to share great anime with the rest of my family. Death Note, Code Geass, GITS, Cowboy Bebop, Mushishi etc. You all know the greats, I don't need to tell you. Its something I like to do - why not share our passion with our loved ones?
Sadly with Gurren Lagann I just can't. Can you imagine the faces of my mother, sister and cousin (female) when for the first few episodes they encounter Yokos bouncing boobs (they even include sound effects for it LOL!) and Buta diving into them?
For a show that lampoons other anime it falls into this facepalming anime trope. I honestly want to punch the horney writes in the face for including it and hand them over a porno mag. If you want breasts, make it an ecchi series. fine. I'm not against ecchi in general. I'm against misplaced ecchi.
I honestly almost dropped this show because of it. Thankfully you guys are all loud as hell and recommended it so highly so I kept watching. Still - it did not need to be here.
[NB: You could say GITS: Stand Alone complex has the major in the first ep wearing what is essentially a bikini but thats it. 1 episode, fine. I can deal with that minor embaressment. But Gurren Lagann keeps it going for too long].
2) WTF/annoying characters
My two pet hates: That f***ing clown (seriously - what the hell is up with that?!) and the two 'bruiser' twins (sorry forgot their names).
Why are these characters even in this show? Not only does the clown look stupid but all it does it fire missiles and cause problem. Where the hell did he even come from?! He's not funny and adds nothing to the story/drama/action.
As for the twins - they just seem like really cliche, saterday morning cartoon, 'funny' side characters. Only they're not funny at all. My own spiral energy increase tenfold when they died. If only that clown would die too. Which brings me onto a related point:
3) Badly written villians (the 4 generals)/weak 'enemy of the week' first half
A primary example is when that wierd Armadillo general was talking to Nia about her being a doll. When Nia asks if she was a doll and he says something like :"yes of course, you are insignificant etc etc" and then Nia slaps him. He then rolls on the floor laughing manically.
"Really?" I thought to my self. "Really? These guys are giving this show a 10/10 and all we have is a cheap, cliched villian doing that dumbass villian laugh?"
It just felt way too childish. In general, the only beastman who was well developed/written was Viiral. The rest were ugh.
Even if you liked the first half you must admit - the villians could have been much better written than they were. Only Viral and the Spiral King were intriguing.
Don't get me wrong - the fight against the generals bit wasn't 'bad' but it could have been a LOT better.
4) Other 'nit-picks'
Why did the spiral king dispose of his daughters? That just made him seem unessarily evil. Since he's immortal he could easily avoid the population reaching 1 millilon by waiting for them to die naturally old age.
I'm pretty sure the writers could have found a way to make it such that Rossio didn't have to lock up Simone in the future arc when the city was rioting. Scape-goats are not always provided in real life. It felt too forced to me - like they were doing it to move the plot along.
...Ok forgive there was more but I've literally just finished watching so my mind is swimming with emotions right now. Feel free to add any that you may have! Remember no trolling or I'll eat you.
So in summary I just can't give it a 10/10. I've given it an 8/10 because of my own personal rating system - 10 and 9 mean shows that can be enjoyed by non-anime fans in my system. Because of the above points, I don't believe that Gurren Lagann is a show that can be recommened to non-anime fans. In my heart though I must admit I want to give it a 9/10.
In the end I'm just frustrated because its these small minor things that stop me from thinking "this is a near-perfect show".
Anyway thanks for reading. I'm not an argumentative person so if you're looking for an argument then sorry I won't respond. Just add your thought and opinions/dicussion. Thanks!

I completely agree. The humor was mostly not funny at all. I disliked the beginning because all the show did was throw a bunch of crappy shonen stereotypes all over the place. But I guess the show still had its charm and has an epic feeling that won me over.
