So it's been proven that swearing can ease pain(physical), but how much of this do you think is true? Can you tolerate people when they swear or do you think its bad manners?

That depends on who you're around with -- and -- where you are.

Examples:

-- The gym I go to really discourages vulgarity.
-- Defintely not in church.
-- Same in professional settings.

Places where you can (and not get into any trouble):

-- Sporting events, especially football
-- Private places, like at home or in your car

===

Furthermore, I'd like to cite Ned Flanders. Y'know... that one old episode where he had to be in a mental hospital after... finally exploding in a giant fit of anger.

I do believe that using profanity has been shown to reduce stress, and therefore should be marketed as a drug.

But like KyuuAL said, there are places where it is best to contain yourself. I think the car is one place people blow it all the time, it can be quite stressful ^_^

the only reason it helps it becuase it allows you to vocalize some of the problems, getting it out... other things then swearing works too...

i dont realy care about when other people swear... as long as it isnt in my house lol...

Nothing wrong with swearing (I can say "fuck" and not be mad), but it is in no way good for you.

edit: that study is about physical pain, my link is not.

It depends..

You shouldn't swear like in front of kids to not influence or show your unpleasing behavior (lol).. but if your by yourself its good to swear once in a while to release the anger inside

When my team goes rowing the helmsman usually swears at us a lot, keeps us going strong. Kids are watching the races but meh, probably can't hear us over the rest of the boats.

I swear, A LOT, especially when gaming, and am damn proud of it. However I noticed when I swear its usually not when I'm rage, as I usually just ragequit if pushed over the edge.

Also I am not claiming that swearing directly correlates to ANGER. It doesn't. At least not for me.

so swearing can be just fine.

You can claim that, but you'll be wrong. The swearing experiment is based on the fact that cathartic swearing is an aggressive behavior. It's been widely accepted as a scientific fact since the Bobo Doll Experiments in the 60's that aggressive behavior causes, causation not correlation, people to become more aggressive.

Well, I've never noticed physical pain going away, but for sure that I feel a bit more relaxing after shouting a couple of swearing words and offending an object after something went wrong.

I swear a lot, I was not really educated this way, but that's what happens.

For my part it does ease stress when shouting and swearing, altough i try to be more composed when people are around. Good for one self maybe, but for others i think it´s a nuisance.

Swear words are cultural, and I am pretty sure I don't particularly care if someone says "hello fuckers" vs "hello guys"

I might frequently say "sup bitches" or whatever. It doesn't matter.

I personally sense no aggression or anything. Hell, the person could be laughing and swearing. (JON FUCKING STEWART, BITCHES!! <3)

Swearing is not always aggressive behaviour, so even if "aggressive behavour causes people to become more aggressive," (btw that is part of my original point about catharsis not working out well for people) it doesn't apply to swearing in all cases. Thus swearing is not always "bad" or a cause of aggression.

edit: and none of what I was talking about really related to physical pain as I have the OP ignored because they are an idiot.

Whether you care or not is completely irrelevant. I'm arguing about the speaker, not the listener. The usage of fuckers carries a more culturally aggressive connotation than guys. The impact may be reduced by the individual's previous exposure to or usage of obscenities, which was a point that Stephens made in the article I linked, but it's still there even if it's not significant enough to be noticable. Do you think you'd be conscious of being more aggressive if you watch someone attack a bobo doll?

Of course it's not good for you! It's vulgar and anyone who does it all the time is also someone who has a "I'm gonna do whatever I want" and/or a "who cares what you think" attitude. Those kinds of people have no respect for family or authority and ends of being a deadbeat alcoholic in a broken marriage living in a mobile home trailer for the rest of their lives.

I see it all the time. I dare anyone to tell me, that swearing doesn't lead to something that. Well.... that, or the person ends up going to jail.

Swearing is my religion, I do it all the time, it's part of my vocabulary.
It's most likely because I do not have a high tolerance with anger, so I swear to let it all out, and it seems endless...
Also, a lot of people in Quebec swears, because of the amount of dirty words there is in our manner of speaking.
