Awesome is what I want to say in this anime. You don't see this anymore in new anime nowadays.

I haven't seen a lot of animes with only ship-to-ship battles, so this should be a new perspective.

the 2 things that bothered me about this episode were A) The space ship was flaming in space and smoke was coming out as if there was an atmosphere (although that is whatever) and B) How the heck could you tell a fleet's size by their reconnaissance? I think they said they intercepted messages or something, but why the hell would a reconnaissance team be sending messages about their own fleet size back to their fleet?

If Lafiel could have even 1/10th of her mother's battle smarts, she's going to be an awesome commander in the future.

Flame and smoke in space is quite realistic, although particularly in the case of flames, they won't last long due to the rapidly decreasing amount of oxygen. There should be enough oxygen on the ships themselves to sustain a flame for a short period, however.

In any case, this was my favorite episode of the season so far. I finally got the connection with the cast that I was looking for, or rather this episode helped complete the connection. It helps that the battle itself was pretty engaging to watch; there were some good tension moments too.

Good job.

Each faction knows the relative power of enemy fleet, production capacity, speed of force relocation etc. They also have certain grasp on enemy fleet composition doctrines. So, by range, intencity and composition of reconnaissence forces it is possible to evaluate active military presence and composition.

That must've been very frustrating for Lafiel to not be able to resolve the battle by her own means. At least they survived their very first real battle.

All in all, I guess it went pretty well for their first battle.
Or at least they didn't get blown up.

Guess Lafiel wanted to avenge the Gosroth by destroying the enemy ship there herself. How did it survive being barraged by so many ships even after its shielding was depleted?

Gosroth was essentially killed by a "golden bullet" - a hit directly in a vulnerable area of anti-matter chamber. Otherwise they'd probably still win at that point. UM ships did not get that unlucky and so they needed to get pummelled the proper way. IIRC one of the scouts even gets away.
