Commodore Fork passing out was unexpectedly funny for me. He would make a fine commander for the front lines :P. The fact that Admiral Lobos couldn't be bothered with his fleet commanders because he's taking a nap speaks volumes about how the rest of the mission will go.

The council continues to set itself up for failure with Cornelia appearing to be its new pro-war spearhead. Truniht has stayed quiet which makes me wonder how much of a power grab he's really aiming for.

Rubinsky looks to be playing a dangerous game trying to continually balance both sides from the safety of Phezzan. When the story does shift to Phezzan in earnest, I'm expecting his comeuppance to be something major.

...even a saint needs a soldier to do the dirty work.

As much as I like characters in the Alliance like Yang Wenli, and in this episode found Ensign Franz quite admirable, I continually find myself more and more in awe of the might of the Empire and in particular Lohengramm's cunning nature. The preemptive toast to their victory and shattering of glasses segueing to the white Imperial fleet against black space (and the glorious closing theme) just struck me as epic, inspiring... Another fine moment in this series.

And yes, Commodore Fork passing out was quite unexpectedly hilarious.

I like how the series shows the good and bad sides of both the Empire and the Alliance, so that it feels more of a regular battle rather than good vs evil. This way, its easier to take an objective standpoint, and not just be rooting for a "good" side to defeat the "evil" side in the end.

This show is driving home to me the fact that war makes people do terrible things. I feel for ensign franz for having to discover that his country isn't so great after all.

I like Reinhard, but that was one of the most fucked up plans. It was interesting to see his plan succeed through Frans' eyes.

Good ep, 5/5

Fork passing out was really a WTF moment.

Once again it's been proved that this war isn't Good vs. Evil, with The Alliance plundering food from the innocent villagers.

Reinhard is already celebrating the Empire victory, looks like Yang will have to save The Alliance again.

While Fork was disposed of in a way I didn't expect, I'm glad his presence is no longer there to add further damage to the Alliance Forces.

Also, poor Franz. He was just caught up in the wrong time.

And what meaning did having to break one's champagne glass after that toast have?

As Fork's subordinate says its a temporary illness, in 15 mins he will be just fine. Which made me brake on laughs was the way he suddenly fainted and the 'whatever' face of that front line commander's subordinate.

Anyways is extremely unreasonable of the high council to keep advancing in the front lines and to keep giving resources to the remaining Empire planets. It's so obvious that the Empire intends to destroy the Alliance's economy, yet, that bitch in Heinessenpolis agreed with the plan of buying the people's heart with food. I understand that the citicenz would think of that expedition as a mockery but still...

No, not really but I like it, for some reasons that the villagers began a rebellion against the army.

Andrew Fork passing out was really funny and random, lol. I wasn't expecting that.
It seems like Reinhard's plan is working out smoothly.
I was really getting the "this is epic" vibe towards the ending of this episode with the ending song kicking in and when Lohengramm and his admirals were making a toast and preparing for battle.

And this episode also showed the more "evil" side of the Alliance. Plundering food and killing everyone.

The disgust expressed at Fleet Admiral's afternoon nap-taking strike a cord with me, especially when I have to put up with my country's obnoxious politicians. With regards of military strategy, Reinhard's plan was cunning but effective, manipulating the slogan the Alliance used for themselves. It went beyond cutting the supply line of the Alliance but staining the credibility of Alliance efforts to 'liberate' the oppressed citizens.

However, what's more interesting in this episode is the depiction of the effects of war from each possible angle. We have the point of view from the power-obsessed, self-serving politicians, the front line soldiers and the commoners who worried more about putting food on their table than their supposedly restrained 'freedom'.

Fantastic episode, I'll just give LoGH a 10/10 unless somewhere along the lines it went horribly wrong, which is probably unlikely.

The Alliance's plundering was indeed harsh, although I wouldn't say that puts the Alliance on equal terms with the Empire just yet. Afterall, it was a direct result of the attack on the transport fleet and the scorched Earth policy, two of the more underhanded tactics in warfare.

Cornelia is kewl, haters gonna hate.

This episode completely sold it for me. I love this show.

I am favoring the Empire to win. The Alliance, while it has its good, admirable characters like Yang and Franz, has shown to be nothing more than thugs equaling the Empire. Besides, Reinhard is a badass, even though this tactic of his was a bit harsh, it proved to be successful.

I wonder what will Yang do.

I agree...I seem to find myself favoring the Empire. Not that both sides don't own the war, but The Alliance was definitely the aggressor in this episode. With such strong leverage they should have at least tried it Yang's way, but they usually don't until there are many casualties.

This.

Reinhard draws first blood, now it's up to Wenli to respond, I guess. I don't suppose anyone else in entire fleet of the Alliance can come up with a successful plan to counter-attack the Empire now. Sad, isn't it?

So either Yang Wenli does something or the Alliance suffers a massive defeat. However if there is a third option that I haven't considered, I will be a happy puppy.

Anyway, it's about time to see two master tacticians duking it out without any idiots in their way. However, Reinhard has gained my admiration with the way he used both the citizens of the Empire and the Liberation Forces. That doesn't mean I'll be cheering for him ofcourse, only that I now expect Wenli to respond with something equally interesting...

Agreed. Normally all we'd hear of riots are the statistics: planets occupied by fleets x, y and z have rebelled, just as planned. Their unanimous resistance would seem silly, if we only saw the Empire abandon them and nothing of the Alliance's direct treatment. In LoGH, as in the real world, every way of life is given some amount of attention, to display the reason it contains. Funny how when you compare the soldiers in this episode to the small-time gunners in Reinhard's fleet, their behavior is much the same. They'd probably get along quite nicely if countries didn't mandate they kill each other.

I'm still not buying the whole idea of the war of logistics. 50 million people on 200 planets means 250 000 people per planet. None of those planets apparently are self-sufficient: we've been shown that people can't build their own wells and irrigation systems despite the Empire being able to build spaceships. Moreover, they said those 50 million people would require 50 million tonnes of grains as supplies, so each person would need one tonne? Really? (Maybe it was the translation?)

Also, the Alliance was giving food to the planets and now they are taking all the extra supplies that people had hidden in the attics. What happened to the supplies they delivered? I'm thinking there must not have been that much since it's an army of 3 million. But still, I would think that even when it's tight 50 million people could feed 3 million extra. Even if people on a planet are concentrated in one area where the growth season is over, the other side of the planet should have plenty of natural resources unless the planet is completely barren. With spaceships easily travelling between solar systems it wouldn't be a big trouble to take a look on the other hemisphere. How likely is it that all 200 planets would be barren particularly in a civilisation spanning hundreds of solar systems? Are all the people on all the planets currently living in areas where it's winter?

I'm baffled here. He definitely says 50 million people ("go sen man nin") and 5 billion tonnes ("go juu oku ton"), so if it's a mistranslation it would have to do with the structure of the sentence, not the numbers (my Japanese is atrocious). But I see no reason for it to be mistranslated; the translation has been excellent. So...5 billion tonnes of grain for 50 million people. That's 100,000kg of grain per person. Enough for multiple centuries and maybe even enough for a millennium.

Because that's really far off and not just a mild inaccuracy, I'm going to give LOGH the benefit of the doubt and assume that there's just some misunderstanding here.

If I remember correctly, the supply ships were attacked later when the colonies had already received goods, so what was cut off was just the supplies for the army. I found it a bit strange that people on the planets would have used up everything they received so quickly, particularly since one can assume such a distant colony is self-sufficient. I think this is somewhat explained by an error I probably made: in a later episode the size of the army was confirmed to be 30 million I think, not 3 million, so that was my mistake. That would indeed be a burden on the people, particularly if most of the army is in one place. If they received supplies for 250 000 people on one planet, there's no way there would be enough for the whole army. Still, the whole need for supplies seems just a convenient plot device here.

Maybe some colonies have a few million people while others are very small. But to keep an army like that fed is indeed a massive undertaking. The small population explains why the colonies seem to be quite primitive. People starting the colonization would be pioneers with well-rounded skills so there's no time for specialization yet and daily work will be focused on building the essentials. That's something to think about: if we were to find 200 habitable planets easily accessed with spaceships, would it be better to focus on one or two to create big cities with some specialists focusing solely on how to improve the quality of life, or should people just flock wherever they want in the hope of finding a new life in an untouched territory?

I still don't have an explanation for the huge amount of grain though.

Yeah, tell Franz and all those people who ended up dying it was a "really simple plan". Which it wasn't, as Live2Win pointed out Reinhard manipulated quite a few different things in this plan to his advantage. Pretty cunning, though I don't think I'd have it in me to sacrifice so many people for the "greater good" like that.

Great episode, stuff like the highest admiral taking an afternoon nap, how the the story was told through Franz's pov, and the final scene added up for probably my favorite episode so far.

Just as Yang said...

- It started of similar to the "Scorched Earth Tactic" that was used by the Russians against Napoleon.

- Then it escalated into the Alliance having to take back what they were distributing, AND MORE to even sustain themselves after their main supplies fleet got destroyed by the Empire; which ultimately threw their entire campaign to hell.

- Riots broke out and many innocent people/soldiers died, and supplies were wasted. In the end, it was a severe loss for the Alliance. Also, when they were at least trying to minimize losses by retreating... the main Commander is taking a freaking nap so no order could be made official? Well done, Alliance. Well done. LoL at Fork. That foolish women in the High-council is a problem too.

I just hope at least Franz makes it out alive with his new girlfriend.

Reinhard's overwhelming victory indeed. I enjoyed that early celebration of theirs, and I predict a massacre next episode... unless Miracle Yang can pull something off.

The only thing keeping the Alliance in tact right now is the loan from Phezzan, and I can't see that as a long-term thing. They will be in-debt badly, so it's either going to escalate into conflict in the future again, or they will hit it big somehow.

5/5 -- for portraying how messed up this was so well. Definitely the first 'large-scale' pivotal event in the series.
