Referring to people in modern Japan today. It's not strange to see a lot of guys or girls on their knees in anime we watch but lately, depending on the characters, it's growing to be a pet peeve of mine. Reason being kneeling before someone else means you made yourself very low, at least that's how western people view it while it may not be the case for Japanese people. Knees folded and head touches the ground, from what I perceive means that you're honest about what you say and your apology is sincere.

A lot of people in anime does that. While a character have the potential to be cool or manly, once he does that at some point my respect point to him/her degraded. So here am I wondering if people in modern Japan - or maybe anywhere else in the world that I'm not aware of - still do that.

I've never seen someone do that irl. Maybe it happens in japan, but I don't think it happens so often - as most anime seem to imply.

This reminds me of a certain VN about genuflection that I read recently.

Back on topic, I don't know how much people genuflect in Japan. All I know is that, when they do, it seems it results in a violent, gory death.

I don't kneel to nobody except for royalty, but in anime it's just a sign of conceitement or just the person being controlled or manipulated unless the character he/she is kneeling to is royalty or of extremely high rank in a military anime.

In Korea, we bow slightly before elders. In special cases before important family members, we bow with our knees on the floor and heads very low as a sign of respect. I actually find this a very nice part of the culture, and was delighted when my wife's grandmother enjoyed the respect we gave her when last we visited.

Can't speak for everywhere but kneeling feels like submitting to me, I think that less though having watched a lot of anime. Lots of people are very proud/stubborn so kneeling isn't something they like to do.

I don't get on my knees much because I have bad joints. =p

I've seen it only once , and that was after some street punk seriously had pissed this yakuza dudes off.

Oh, now that I think of it, the people serving you at high-class ryokan do it aswell.
Not with the forehead to the ground, but they'll be always on their knees while they are in your room when you're around.

In anime I really only see it done for comedic effect or something similar, and it wouldn't be funny if it were common, so I wouldn't think it would be.

As a westerner, I view kneeling as submissive, so I myself will probably never even get on one knee, let alone put my nose to the ground, nor will I probably ever see someone do so. Things would have to be quite serious for someone to submit like that.

I was too literally in what I thought this was about. I was thinking, "Well, last year I had a bottom locker so I had to get on my knees, and whenever I dig into the cupboards..."

I have never seen anyone bow like that other than in books or anime/manga.

It's only obvious because this is an anime site. Anywhere else, it would be about sex.

I think it's more of an (East) Asian cultural phenomenon. I rarely see the posture in Western media, but I see quite a bit back in China (back in the days, kowtow), and in Japan. And besides, in Japan, bowing is like some normal fact of life, but I rarely see that happen in the West. So.

In Europe I've never seen someone get on their knees or bow, nor I did it, well as person above me said, it's more for East - Asian culture...

I think this brings up and interesting cultural difference in America. An Asian American (like myself) is probably used to bowing in some fashion or another on an almost-daily basis, if they were raised among other Asian Americans. White Americans (I'll say I'm this, too, as I'm actually a hapa), on the other hand, for the most part aren't used to this act, according to the responses here.

It's just in anime where people randomly bowing on their knees for small mistakes. :X

Okays, topic title may be misleading. What I meant is bowing on their knees, mostly to apologize to someone. >.> It'd be fine if the person just say sorry and touch the back of your head, make a silly face, but kneeling and bowing down with head on the ground like that would just lower your self-esteem. I understand if it's part of culture and I have no problem seeing people bow to elders or royalties.

Same;

I kneel to no one, I couldn't care less if the person was Royalty, or some sort of high up authority figure. If you want me to kneel, you'll have to beat me down to my knees. :)
