I just wrote like the second positive review of this and I'm kind of curious how many people not only had fun with this, but found it genuinely good for what it was blatantly meant to be: a wilfully silly, over the top gorefest.

Judging by it's overall rating of 4.72 and reviews that gave it a rating of 1, it really doesn't look like it's worth watching, despite what you say about it.

As if people aren't going to watch it anyway just to jump on the "Apocalypse Zero is the worst anime of all time" bandwagon.

I genuinely enjoyed it and would go so far as to call it one of my favorites.
Then again, I'm a fanatic of 'bad anime'...

Watched it only because I got some bad ass looking figurines for a song. Damnably great looking figures. Damn, damn anime. I need to give this a second chance...maybe...not...dunno...

Same here. Reading manga now, and must say it's even better than anime at some points.

I understand the hatred for stuff like MD Geist because apparently it actually tries to have a serious story and a message and fails, but so many people watch Apocalypse Zero and laugh out loud then still label it as a legendarily bad movie thinking it wasn't meant to be funny

how you could watch a series where one of the villains that the main character fights has a microphone for a penis and uses said microphone to sing really badly and torture his opponent and not think of it as an intentional comedy is beyond me

It's obviously meant to be stupid. I was gonna give it a 5 but because it didn't have a proper ending where they fight it out it dropped my rating =(

My fiance owns this, and I'm actually about to watch it just for the sake of saying I've watched everything we own (I vowed to not buy more anime until I finish everything we own, UNLESS it's a rare find). I think the rating is hilarious; I've never seen a rating that low before. XD I look forward to it more than ever now!

I enjoy watching bad anime just for the sake of a good laugh. It's refreshing to watch crappy/whatever anime in between the really good ones.

I see you have Detroit Metal City in your favorites... that's another weird anime that bases a big part of its appeal on sheer vulgarity. but it's not known as legendarily bad because people watched it as it aired and it doesn't have a horrible reputation dating back to the early 90s as a result of a bunch of ANIME IS SUPERIOR MATURE INTELLIGENT ANIMATION anime nerds who are now thought of as "wise veteran Japanimation scholars" labeling it as an abomination.

Just finished watching Apocalypse Zero on DVD, this is one whacked show. It is definitely a creature of it's time, when OVAs were much more extravagant than they are now. I could easily have done with some more of the story, a third episode wouldn't have been bad.

I genuinely enjoyed this. I kinda liked it a little and found it hilarious at times.
Actually, I'm considering reading the manga (what's been translated so far, at least)

I liked it a lot. I'm pretty tough when in comes to gore, but this show made me a little squeamish once or twice in the first episode. Second episode wasn't as sickening. I actually thought it had some awesome characters for 2 episodes...espcially what's his face in the zero suit.

One thing that was a little bothersome was they never explained how he survived falling off a cliff with some of his insides coming out of his mouth... takes a real tough guy to walk that off lol.

As tokusatsu fans, I enjoying this bad OVA

Feel like Shin Kamen Rider or Kamen Rider Amazon with baddass armor

If you talk about story, yes this one is not good. But I don't care about it. The action sequences is so baddass that was I like from this OVA.

I enjoy it. Awesome action and tons of blood fun. The manga is much better though.

It's amazing. The atmosphere is legitimately disgusting, it's like some horrible dream and I love it.

Everybody misses the black humor and social satire. The leatherdaddy dildo frog who spews countercultural platitudes and mourns his loss of "individuality" when his pet flower monster is destroyed, the girl holding the guy who just had all his skin melted off telling him "you'll be okay!" etc. hilarious.

The idea that it's 'so bad it's good' is ridiculous. So much shit is extremely low-brow and people unironically love it because it's WELL MADE. Drop the meme opinion and admit that you're laughing with it, not at it - and that if an action-comedy is making you laugh and have fun, IT'S A GOOD ACTION-COMEDY. No one says they like Ping Pong club "ironically" or that it's "bad". Same for Detroit Metal City. Same for Azazel-san. Same for Dead Leaves. Same for Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt. The only thing keeping people from earnestly considering this series good is the meme opinion from old-school western anime fans that you need to look down on such works because anime is supposed to be high art or whatever nonsense. Everyone is introduced to it as something "objectively bad" and no matter how much they enjoy it they have to agree with it because they don't want to disagree with the consensus.

The OVA is definitely above-average in terms of production quality but the manga beats it visually; nonetheless I highly doubt things like technical drawing and animation quality are what's making people say it's "objectively bad, but I like it". It's peer pressure and double standards.

The idea that it's too disgusting to watch/read is ridiculous. The same author's Shigurui is a million times more over the top with the gore porn, and makes it far more obvious that it's fetishistic for the author and that he's really into ero-guro. Yet everyone considers that "high art".

You're not wrong.
It's really sad and laughable how this gets misunderstood.

It's a shlocky monster fighting show that isn't pretentious, goes for absurdist humor, and doesn't overstay its welcome. There is no filler either. If it had OPM's art, was released today, and was 12 episodes long, it would definitely be rated much higher.

Gore is only a bad thing when the creators try to pass it off as depth or maturity. Or if it doesn't fit with the story being told. This show clearly is doing neither.

It seems like every fighting shonen has to have some "deep message" and last so long that the whole thing feels meandering and redundant. This was a breath of fresh air actually.

Definitely enjoyed it. Verdict:
What Power Rangers looks like when parodied by an S-tier ero-guro mangaka. Plot: In a post-apocalyptic Tokyo, a highschool superhero fights seriously bizarre monsters. Not the pretentious shounen shit, this has a wicked absurdist humor. (6.5/10)

Yeah not sure why the reviews are so bad like it’s perfectly on par for a 90s ova. I gave it a 6/10. It’s fine. Not terrible. I didn’t waste my time. I was interested in what was going on but it didn’t give too much to really work with. Felt like i was watching a series a couple of episodes in already, like if i watched sailor moon from episode 8. But that’s what anime is truly and how it used to be, just a commercial to make you go buy the manga to connect the dots. Like the other guy said in this forum. The anime is high art people don’t like to view anime as commercials for manga, but it was true and still kind of is. I just see this as that.
