Calling bands emo/screamo as if those were music genres can be very confusing for people who don't have a clear idea about this kind of music. The proper way to call them would be "Post-Hardcore" and "Metalcore".
Some examples of Post-Hardcore would be:
AFI.
Eyes Set To Kill.
He Is Legend (latest 2009 album excluded).
In Fear And Faith.
Lostfoundbroken.
Scary Kids Scaring Kids.
Senses Fail.
Silverstein.
The Used.
With Broken Wings.
Could be considered Post-Hardcore:
30 Seconds To Mars.
Muse.
Story of the Year.
Three Days Grace.
Trapt.
Trust Company.
I don't really agree with these, though. I'd call them alternative rock or hard rock.
Metalcore is a genre that refers to a band playing a more "hardcore" style of Thrash Metal, Melodic Death Metal and Post-Hardcore, along with others. There are many many bands that fall into the Metalcore category that don't have to do with this kind of genre, so in this particular case, we are referring to the kind that comes from adding a more "hardcore" style to the "Post-Hardcore" genre.
Examples of Metalcore deriving from Post-Hardcore would be:
Alexisonfire.
Bullet For My Valentine.
Inhale/Exhale.
The Fall Of Troy (although most of their songs fall into the "Mathcore" category because of how technical their music is. As far as I know, Mathcore is a subgenre of Metalcore, so it'd be alright to add it as Metalcore).
Norma Jean (same as the above. Not the best example, though, due to the amount of distortion they use).
Bring Me The Horizon (normally, I would call this deathcore, but it has enough elements of Post-Hardcore to consider it the "heaviest" version of Post-Hardcore I've eventually liked up to date).
NOT Post-Hardcore or Metalcore:
Rise Against, Relient K, The Offspring, Sum41. Anything sounding like these is Punk or Punk Rock, although many true punk fans might puke at this classification.
A Day To Remember, All That Remains, etc. These are other different types of metalcore which derive from different kinds of metal. Nothing to do with the Post-Hardcore genre.
Atreyu, Adema, Disturbed, Drowning Pool, Slipknot, etc. These are Nu Metal (with a few rap/hip-hop influences) or Aggro Metal (more on the metal side).
In Flames. They're a pretty good example for their genre, although not the greatest IMO, anything sounding like this is Melodic Death Metal.
As Blood Runs Black.... what the fuck is stuff like this doing in this post? That's straight Deathcore.
Linkin Park, Papa Roach. Those are alternative rock, may be even considered Nu Metal by some people.
I may not be the greatest Post-Hardcore fan, and I agree that some of the bands in that genre sound like crap... but seeing people disregarding this type of music completely just because the mainstream calls them emo/screamo is, in the least, funny.
I hope the examples are clear enough and some people who read this finally get a slight idea of what true Post-Hardcore, so-called emo/screamo by people who don't know the genre, is.
i don't care about.. genre's i listen to what i think sounds good be it any genre ^^ |
