Japanese animation studios are slowly venturing towards 3D anime characters as can be seen in Appleseed and Blame. Whats your opinion on those fully 3d anime nowadays?

I dont like fully animated in 3D CG, its just that the japanese want to caitch up to the US in 3D skills but if they do that they will lose their kick @$$ 2D skills and that is a more rare form nowadays and I would hate for it to be lost. 3D is better when its mixed with 2D used for BG's or objects.

I don't really care much about it, they can probably make good things out of it as well. Though I do hope the majority stays the way it is now (and I think it will).

Full CG sure looks cool and I think they should keep making those movies, but that must not mean that the 2D scene has to suffer.
What I dont like is that they nowadays tend to mix more 3D with 2D, which most of the times doesn't work out (take Dragonaut for example).

I like it a lot - for now I watched only Appleseed 1, 2 and Vexille, but I hope I'll find some more. XD

But if I had to choose, the old style is still much much better - I mean, imagine Lucky Star in 3D technique - unpossible to me. XD

I think more people associate it with CG than 3D.

the only anime i've seen in a 3-D theatre was Pokemon and i thought it was OK

as for 3D animation, sometimes they spend too much money towards the animation and very little attention to the storyline. that's why in my opinion, they're not that good. but the animation is still pleasing to the eyes :]

If it looks like Advent Children or Spirits Within, then yes, 3D is good. Or if it looks like the CGI in Final Fantasy VIII or X.
(Hmm...all of those are "Final Fantasy" things...ah well.)

If it looks anything like Nemo or like that type of movie, then no.

I am not a fan of CG/3D animation. I will forever love my 2D disney movies, and anime. If anime starts to go towards the direction of CG animation I will be really upset. I feel like you have so much more artistic creativity with 2D images over the CG style, since to be creative with CG/3D would most likely cost a lot more than it would if it were 2D.

I know. It's awful.
Though I don't think anime would ever get to such an extreme like that, since many anime shows are based off of Manga.

I am not a fan of 3D animation, I don't mind it but I definitely prefer a 2D style. I don't see 3D as an improvement of 2D, the effects and elements are too different in both.

Disney is returning to traditional 2d animation next year with "The Princess and the Frog", scheduled for Christmas 2009. Interestingly enough, the person who pushed for the return to 2d was Pixar's John Lasseter, director of Toy Story, A Bug's Life, and Cars.

And to answer the original question, I hate it. But to be honest, I was pretty militantly opposed to the transition from cel to DIP as well.

Well it looks good in most anime that I have seem that use 3D CGI. Of what I've seen FF VII and .hack//GU Trilogy look the best I guess.. The 3D CGI in Blassreiter however doesn't fit with the rest of the series so I think its used badly there.

I love 3-D stuff in live actions. Kinda sucker for those sci-fi hi-tech movies like Spider-Man, Dejavu, The World After Tomorrow... BUT I'm not really enjoying 3D in anime. As mentioned before, Blassreiter is the latest example of it and it just doesn't feel like "anime". It's just a matter of people's mindset about this technology. 3D is really popular in Western movies but what made people love anime was the traditional art or whatever-they're-using to animate the art.

However, some studios did well with integrating 3-D. For instance, Sky Girls for the mechs transformation. It looks good on the clear blue sky and you almost can't see the 3D. It's good enough for me. Another example is Digimon. It's cool to just have 3-D for the evolution scenes. In fact, it's cool. I don't want it in the actual anime, however. As far the full CG movie "Digital Monster X-Evolution", it's cool because it's not mixed with regular animation.

Okay, in my mind 3D and CG are two different things, and I'm not sure which one we're talking about here. CG is the computer generated images like Advent Children or that failed atttempt at animateing Suzaku in Fushigi Yuugi Eikoden lol. 3D is where you have to put on the little glasses and the pictures "pop" out of the screen at you.

But anyway, I don't mind tastefull CG. Though I maintain that good CG is the kind that you don't really notice unless you're looking for it. I certainly don't want it to take over the whole animating process like what Disney is trying to do (grrr)

On a different note, 3D anime would be fun. (I can see it being a big hit in the hentai genre ^^)

It would look cool. But I don't think it's something I'll get into; it would most likely make me lose interest. o.o

I would have liked X-evolution better if the animation was better, it still had a few blocky looking characters

Is it a stand-alone?

2 anime(movies) i was blown away by the 3d were "Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children" and "Ghost in the Shell: Innocence"
I love em, it gives you a better view of the character and it usually includes better graphics.

I have seen quite a few and the character-designs are awful.

I honestly can't really say. I loved movies like Advent Children and Appleseed n all, and I couldn't see them in 2D, but some shows that I've seen in 3D were absolutely horrid. Not surprisingly though most of those shows were produced by Gonzo.

I'm mostly open for this sort of things, so I think that 3D is cool. I've also mostly grew up with 2D games, so I sometimes kinda prefer 2D, but like I said, I'm open for new options.

Advent Children is one of 7 world wonders to me xP I like how you still get the anime feeling while watching it, even though it looks like a FMV game at first xP

not a big fan of 3d elements. Someone mentioned Blassreiter earlier and when I think of horrid 3d in anime I always think of that show. It was just plain awful looking. I couldn't stand more than one episode of that show. It just doesn't mix too well with 2d in my opinion.

full out CG is good, Advent Children for example.

I haven't seen any anime like this, only the ones with some computer-generated images mixed (usually in the background) with 2D drawings. If what you are talking about is anything like what I've seen in U.S. children's movies lately then, I hate it. What was done in the movie Beowulf based around actual actors was better but it's still not a style I particularly like. I feel like the people choosing this style over 2D are trying to make their animations more realistic but to me that's losing part of what makes animation a special style in its own right. It's not just a second-rate version of live-action. I guess I could be wrong about their motivations but whatever those might be, I still prefer the more traditional styles. Some CGI is fine, but there's something about the drawn images that appeals to me in a unique way.

If we're talking something like MS IGLOO, then absolutely no. I can't watch it. I like the current style and cells, of course anime will continue to evolve, but no IGLOO-like shit.

It needs to develop some more. As of now, too wire-frame- ey, un-natural. It's painful for me to watch. Got to respect the artist's hand. Pen, brush and of course a few new digital tools in his pencil box. much that I see (and that's not a lot, since I avoid) just looks to rpg gamey.

I mean .. The Sims is just not anime

Innocence was more 2-D combined with 3-D. Full 3-D is something like Freedom, which looks like ****.

I'm not a fan of full-on action animes, and so far that's the only 3D animes I've seen... It seems that with the style of graphics, comes the focus on that genre. For that reason, I don't like it.

If by 3D, you mean CG, then I wouldn't want that. I think the real reason that I got into anime was because the lack of 2D animation coming from American studios. I grew up with bunches of 2D Disney films, so Japanese anime (being nice and 2D) helped filled the void that Disney is creating now that they are going down the CG path.
