Played as in you just play it once or twice and didn't care for it or play it and like it though being overrated?

In any case, for the latter condition that would have to be FFVII.

I can't think of something off the top of my head as a game that is overrated post-release (though I am sure there are plenty), but there are many games that have been a big letdown with the buildup of pre-release hype. Some examples of that would include Fable and Spore.

Halo
any FF past 2
GTA series
CoD
any Metal Gear game past MGS3

Sorry, it's really hard to name just one, but those are the ones that don't deserve the praise they get.

Did you take in consideration of what games were out back then and on what kind of console you are playing it? Makes quite the big difference. Comparing it to newer FF games with better graphics and shit would make it an unfair comparison.

Don't get me wrong, I am quite the FF series hater myself, but I really don't see how FFVII is overrated, as it is one of the more memorable games on the PS1 for the majority of people.

I've seen more people thinking this game is overrated, but I've yet to hear a fair reason.

That being said, you're free to find whatever shit overrated you want. I am just after your reasoning.

Morrowind

(not sayin it's bad but overrated...best game of the year, people working at Best Buy saying it's the best game they ever played, etc, etc.)

Of course FFVII.
The game's good and not too awesome...
I you ask me, FFIV was much more interesting.
And i value more plot and gameplay than grafics.

Jumping on the bandwagon and saying FFVII.

It's not completely overrated but still not "the best game ever" as some put it.

Metal Gear Solid 4 and Pokemon Platinum and Pearl. MGS4 was just awfully paced, but Pokemon Platinum felt lazy and like it was their solely to tap into the growing DS owners. Yeah, they needed a new Pokemon game, but at least let the series evolve a bit. Boring to the very end.

COD, the first one I properly bought was MW2 sadly :/ though I had played others before.
God of war was a rather overrated one too :/ okay if you like mindless hack and slash, but for that I prefer the DMC series.
FFXIII I can't see why people call that a good game >> but that's just me.
Uncharted too, but I only played it for an hour when I started getting bored of games again (thank you ffXIII)

Hmm I guess Bayonetta
Sure the game is alright, but a 40/40 (Famitsu) is overkill. (then again..we're talking about the magazine that gave 'nintendogs' a 40/40 =____=; )

I honestly feel like any 'OVERRATED GAME' thread is entirely pointless.

It's always going to have.

Call of Duty
Final Fantasy
Halo
Gears of War
GTA
etc..

Fallout 3. In between the company bashing JRPG's, and friends saying this, that, and the other godly thing: I got bored in the 1st hour, and returned it the next day out of my 5 day rental :/

Put a shooter in the destroyed future, with mutants, and other survivors trying to survive as you try to find your dad. Liam Neeson was the only redeeming factor here.

Tales of the Abyss without a doubt the most overrated game I ever purchased and didn't love.

Care to elaborate? I didn't like half of the Abyss characters besides Asch, Jade, and Tear, but found the game itself enoyable.

Ooo I forgot about this and oblivion, I didn't like it first of all, then tried giving it another go, got a few hours in but then didn't play for like a week, couldn't pick it up at all. I want to try again in the future though.

The plot is boring, I can't stand it. It just drags. You constantly a gofer for somebody and you never have what you need in that game. It is a little bit like this:

"you need x item, to get it you need to travel to x"
upon arriving at x
"In order to get x item you need to first travel to x and obtain x"
Get item, item is made, travel back to where you begin."

You also fight everybody over and over. Plus conversation in the little scenes that open up are either not meaningful, someone's rant, or my personal favorite about x problem with the world. Finally above all else the dialogue is like this:

"this seems to be a problem"
Clearly player x knows the answer
"I would rather not say...or some other blow off comment"
as a result team travels to x in order to find the answer and standoffish character says something like, it is what I suspected."

Ion is always captured...

I don't know, it was just not my favorite tales.

I can agree to that.

Other than Luke's whining - Trying to change, Natalia being constantly annoying, and Guy....Guy just standing there sometimes, and most of making you not kill an evil mastermind because he's a high government official (See Yuri Lowell for comparison in Vesperia)

Pretty much. All the popular game that's widely loved by a huge number of fanbase will have some minority believing it overrated.

WoW would be on the list, too.

Halo, FFVII (as well as pretty much every other FF) and more recently, MW2.

As for the biggest disappointment and failure to live up to pre-release hype, that would definitely be Spore.

Team Fortress 2, I've played it since beta. It's gotten terrible since. It's more of a grindfest than world of warcraft. No one even seems to play the game anymore. Everyone just sits in idle servers. Not to mention the newest update made the heavies extremely overpowered. The majority of the games are 70% bots and the real players play heavy. The game was fun before it was a grindfest with supreme class imbalance.

One of these threads again?

Oh well. Just have to say GTA from San Andreas onwards, the entire Halo franchise and Modern Warfare 2, just as I do every time one of these things comes up.

Not to sound like I'm beating a dead horse but I'm pretty sure everyone here can agree that GTA IV was a taxi game, with some shooting missions thrown in.

Does F.E.A.R really get that much hype though? I only hear it mentioned if someone asks for a horror style game, and there's not too many for ps3/360, and even then it's one of the better ones.
As opposed to the others which get creamed over all the time.

Not sure why people would consider Super Street Fighter 4 over hyped. It's not like the game received tons of coverage, and it's really only aimed at the people who loved vanilla SF4. As far as fighting game expansions go, this was by far the best I've seen since as long as I can remember.

I know a lot of people who say it was "pretty good" or sometimes one of their favorites because of the combat system.

makes me rage.
