A nice and bittersweet episode.

When the guy said he could smell brand new books I thought he was going to finally catch up. If the Kaiba in the mind is carrying nothing but new books, I take it that old ones are just missing somewhere in that labyrinth in his head? It did look like quite the confusing place that's easy to get lost in. The little flashback near the end was such a tease. I really want to know what lurks in Kaiba's mind.

I was wondering when they would start showing more signs of Kaiba's past. Anyways, it was another solid episode. The whole results from the actions by the twins were pretty neat.

"I wanted too see your smiling face"

God damn this show knows how too hit where it hurts. My cheeks are stained with tears.

I also loved the sketchy art style of this episode.

Didn't like the animation in this ep, but oh well. Another great ep overall, loved the flashback, Neiro looked adorable in it, can't wait till she actually appears with her body.

Anyways, bring on the next ep~

Ah the OP is beautiful as always. Can't watch start the show without it.

Kaiba, always the mindfuck. Just added it to my top 5; adding it before completion is a first for me.

So it looks like we'll be on this path for maybe 2-3 episodes; go to a planet, see some sad stuff, learn a bit, and a little bit from Kaiba's past. I liked the previous one a little bit better. I think they will meet a guy next episode.

The short song at the very end was great from the sound of it. It was only humming but I hope it is featured later in the series (it was when the flowers were blooming). OP and ED were amazing as always, I love singing to them. Didn't like the art as much, though it showed some emotion while Kaiba was in the hippo suit. He looked quite strained in a couple of shots, I imagine anybody would.

Flashback was such a tease and the highlight of the episode.

Not as much of a heavy hitter as episode 3 and the animation adopted a sketchier look but I enjoyed it. Old couples are so cute :)

Not the most impressive episode, but still great. I loved seeing the grandchildren's reactions to the "treasure" and figuring out what to do next; it made the episode's story feel much more conclusive. The next episode sounds awesome from the title!

Haha, for a moment in the episode I thought Kaiba abandoned the Chroniko body for the Hippo body permanently. But, it was good seeing that he didn't. This show continues to prove its brilliance. Man, it's poignant. I want the OST NOW!

What another fantastic episode. I score after 4 episodes, and I had to go with 10/10 for this one.

Not quite up to "adding it to favourites" yet.

This episode, while not as moving as the 3rd, was solid. I'm leaving the series at a 9 of 10 for now, but it's has already nabbed my #1 show of the season and if it keeps up this level of quality it's going to get my ever-so-rare 10/10.

I have a feeling all of this will lead up to Kaiba remembering why he decided too start fighting against the use of memories this way. Seeing so many people suffer because of it. So I think it is part of the central plot.

The art in this episode is more like memory image instead of a pretty or clear detail but I find it pretty much fit with the title of this episode"The Crone's Memory Room"

If you understand all the small things happened in this episode you will come to enjoy it and find it interesting how it represents to your real world.

Pretty nice but not as awesome as the 2nd and 3rd were.

I liked that different peoples memories were differently arranged.

Kaiba's seemed to be locked away and looked like a labyrinth. It was in line with him not remembering about his past. Kaiba running around with the books in his memory world made it seem that he has a quite strong protection for his memories, compared to the old woman who was just sitting there and started talking on her own.

The grandmother's memory world was well done as well. The first "room" was probably for recent memories and the others(more distant ones) were sort of hidden away since she was an old woman and might not remember everything right away. Also the locked book was a pretty nice figure.

There was some stuff I didn't quite get. Like the chase scene in the beginning. I'd like to think they wanted to say something with it rather than just make an introduction.

Yeah, and I don't think there was a single happy ending in this series so far. Not even a mid-ep one.

On another note, having the book with the memory of the husband clamped up was great metaphor. It's really impressive how much meaning they can convey in an anime with so little dialogue.

Another fantastic episode. It's amazing how much these characters that only appear in one episode develop in 20 minutes. They don't feel like one-demensional characters, which is what makes these last 3 episodes so great. That's including the themes, metaphors and clever but sparse use of dialouge...I could go on for a while could I?

Chase scene at the beginning was hilarious. A quote from the Ep 3 thread...

AnimusNathan said:
That big forehead guy is a great character. Sure on the surface it seems like he's superficial and is only helping Kaiba(who he thinks is Chroniko) because he's sexually attracted, but he hasn't raped her or anything that we know of, which makes me think he's actually a good guy on the inside.

After this episode I'd have to agree. Vanilla really is only helping Kaiba because of his current body, but it looks like he isn't doing anything horrible to 'her', like rape. Looks more like giving her food and attention to me. xD

And its why Kaiba shouldnt be some plot-driven show like some people want. The reason why we love it is because of these 'episodic' tales. You're right BlueYoshi, in 20 minutes we get really compelling characters, relationships and glimpses into this future world, with no crappy exposition, or generic man-on-a-mission type hijinks.

The main character's predicament isnt the point of the show, its merely a trigger to send him across the galaxy so we can see all different manners of living in this anime's universe.

I'm reminded of this thread I made about episodic anime. Post in it if anyone has more thoughts!

wow..this ep really moved me. So deep and somewhat philosophical. The last one was more moving because it was a bit tragic, but this one had a different sort of an impact...

They didnt show them die. I thought they were being thrown back to the lighthouse planet :S
"...our faces marked by toil, by deceptions, by success, by love; our weary eyes looking still, looking always, looking anxiously for something out of life, that while it is expected is already gone – has passed unseen, in a sigh, in a flash – together with the youth, with the strength, with the romance of illusions.” - Joseph Conrad ('Youth')

I must agree that episode 3 was better. This episode was sort of aiming for the same emotional strings, and no way you're going to top episode 3 in that department. As to what Beatnik said above me, I think there is a distinction to be made between shows that are episodic and shows with an underlying plot but 1-episode story arks. This show is clearly going somewhere, Mushishi or Aria would be more of an episodic show. I think a truly episodic show is limited in depth. Even the best ones like mushishi can only go as deep as you can take 1 episode (which is deeper than a lot of plot-focused shows, amazingly enough). But I digress, I loved this episode even if the last one was better. This series is still ace.

This series is really interesting... pretty sad, too. At first it came off as trippy and strange, but I'm starting to see it's serious side.

I love the way memories are conveyed as a library. I like how the grandma's repressed memories about grandpa dying were clamped shut. Cool metaphor. The moment the clamp broke and the book flew open was pretty powerful.

Another beautiful episode. The storytelling about the old couple is simply amazing and heart-moving.

Didn't cry but it made me smile esp. the scene where they showed the flowers growing under their grave.

The ending with the grandchildren was kinda sad indeed.

And I like the way this series takes an episodic approach while undergo plot developments.

I really don't mind that the main plot is moving slowly (only revealing bits and pieces of Kiaba's memory her and there) as long as it all comes together in the end.
