| I read this thread Learning Japanese through Subbed Anime? and wondered how much Japanese you can already understand. Are you able to do greetings and simple daily conversation in Japanese? I'm a Japanese and you can ask me if you have problems. |

| Simple sentences if I can remember the words, although I've actually taken classes for Japanese so I don't count in the "Learning japanese through Subbed Anime" group, unless you want to count learning vocab in which you can count me in said group then. |

| To be able to read a novel but I never talk to a real Japaneses people before and I am not planning to .Probably I might forgot what is Japanese when I am infront of a Japaneses people.So,I am kinda worthless. I have problem listening but I have no problem reading and understating it . |

| I'm more interested in the cultural elements then the language. However, I have unintentionally picked up common words and slang over the years. But my understanding of Japanese grammar in sentences is abysmal. |

| Well, I can probably understand almost everything. Although when techincal terminology is concerned, it depends abit on the topic. I'd say my level of reading and listening comprehension is about the same, although again it depends on the topic and the situation. |

| Not enough. I'm probably working towards JLPT 2 level. So I can hold a conversation for a while. My reading is better than listening (except that my kanji level is atrocious- furigana FTW) I can also understand a bit of Osaka dialect, ahahaha |

| ^ Isn't naga the snake/alien looking things in WoW? OT: eh I'm so-so. In an average sentence I can understand a few words which means I can understand the base of the sentence 65% of the time. |

| I've been studying the language for 5 years. My original goal was to be able to read japanese novels in the original language and I can do that now. I like books and find it's usually best to read them in the original language (that's pretty much the main motivation I have behind learning languages. I learnt French for the same reason). Natsume Souseki's work Kokoro and Kōbō Abe's Inter Ice Age IV made me learn japanese. I wanted more from these authors but I wantet it in it japanese. |

Thank you. The first two years was self-study because the school I went to didn't have teachers in the subject. They were kind enough to let me take an exam in it and they got me the relavant books. The next three I went to high-school and was tutored by a teacher. Kanji was hard at first but once you learn the so called radicals it becomes a lot easier to learn the rest of the kanji in my experience. |

| The amount of Japanese I learned from watching anime probably about the same amount of Spanish I picked up from reading a Mexican restaurant menu.Only several words and nothing more. I am not a stupid weaboo so I do not try to bastardize Japanese language by mixing Japanese words and honorifics in with everyday english when we have english words. Other than not having to wait until the fansubs come out I see no reason to learn Japanese. Even If I decided to one day visit Japan as a tourist(not to catch a connecting flight from Korea to the US) I would simply get one of those Japanese to English Phrase books. The idea that you can actually learn enough Japanese to hold a conversation from watching cartoons is laughable and from what I understand most Japanese people do not speak that way. |
