Great movie, watched it with recently shared english speedsub from HK DVDrip, translation is bad, yet if you know Japanese a little, it's watchable moreover the text is secondary here, it's all about feelings and harmony of childhood.

Wow, I didn't expect this to be so... dark. The picture depicts a bright childhood movie, but wow, I was taken aback with some of the events in the movie.

It was still an enjoyable movie, and I certainly enjoyed the parallels between Nagiko's Kyoto and Shinko's Kyoto, particularly when Takeyoshi and Shinko are in the seedier (and one might say western) portion of Kyoto. There certainly was a bit of anti-western sentiment that I picked up, but it was never overbearing, and after reading that this was based upon an autobiography, I think it's certainly justified.

Just wow. This movie would never be made in America. 8/10

And yeah, if we could get a non-Hong Kong translation (with some improved timing as well), that'd be awesome. I'm pretty sure there was some subtle dialogue that I didn't pick up on much because the translation was so wonky.
