OAVs aren't "bastardized", they are how they are because the chief-director has to adapt a work in a concise way, with a budget generally higher than that of a TV Series. The goal is to sell video casettes and potentially be successful enough to kickstart a TV series.
@sorcery "they are how they are because the chief-director has to adapt a work in a concise way, with a budget" i.e bastardize. |

@Rally- No. bastardize verb: to change something in a way that makes it fail to represent the values and qualities that it is intended to represent. Because your purist nerd side isn't satisfied as the studios isn't providing you with an exhaustive experience doesn't mean it is "bastardized". By your logic, all synopsis in anime profiles are bastardized takes because they don't detail everything that is happening in the story. Think about how absurd it sounds. |

@sorcery I can also quote arbitrary dictionary references. "Bastardize: change (something) in such a way as to lower its quality or value, typically by adding new elements." I'm saying that it isn't a true representation of the manga. That doesn't mean I wouldn't recommend it. Just that it isn't complete and may betray some of the themes. But I would still mention it as a potential point of reference. Still worth experiencing as a work of art. |

Where basically just about all my OVAs from the 80s to the mid 2000s that I actually own physically are worth re-watching for myself even today. As a few examples... "801 T.T.S. Airbats" on Japanese Laserdiscs is peak entertainment over the western DVD release. The original "Agent AIKa" I just recently re-watched the Remastered edition just last week having a blast while drinking beer with some friends while we shot a few games of pool in my mancave. But the original "Agent AIKa" OVA is still a more of a satisfying experience if one can watch it on Japanese Laserdiscs (Granted most of the time one needs to actually understand Nihongo spoken to really fully enjoy any Japanese laserdiscs). "All Purpose Cultural Cat Girl Nuku Nuku" OVA is actually better in my opinion than the TV series that was produced of it a few years later. It's even better if you can get your hands on this OVA on Japanese Laserdisc. Back in 2018 Discotek Media released "Angel Cop" on Blu-ray. Was so worth it to snag a copy of this OVA again over the VHS copies I bought so long ago in the past. Even "Ayane's High Kick" which is simply just two episodes was worth re-watching again a few year ago when I managed to snag a well taken care of copy of this OVA on Japanese Laserdisc. Shit like "Bakuen Campus Guardress", "Baoh the Visitor", "Bastard!!", "Battle Angel Alita", "Battle Athletes", "Tetsuwan Birdy", "Black Magic M-66", "Bubblegum Crisis", "Burn Up! W", "Sukeban Deka", "Demon Fighter Kocho", "Devil Hunter Yohko", "Early Reins", "Geobreeders", "Golden Boy", "Gunbuster", "Gunsmith Cats", "Iria: Zeiram The Animation", "Junk Boy", "Lily C.A.T.", "Mad★Bull 34", "Mahoutsukai Tai!", "Maps", "Master of Mosquiton", "Megazone 23", "Natsuki Crisis", "Shin Cutie Honey", "Outlanders", "Phantom Quest Corp.", "Photon", "Record of Lodoss War", "Ruin Explorers Fam & Ihrie", "Samurai: Hunt for the Sword", "Shamanic Princess", "Shuten Douji", "Youseiki Suikoden", "The Abashiri Family", "Kotetsu no Daibouken", "Ultimate Teacher", all the "Violence Jack" OVAs, "Dennou Sentai Voogie's★Angel", and even "Otenki Oneesan", etc... are all worth re-watching, if one actually owns decent enough copies of these OVAs on physical media. Fuck trying to consume shitty copies of Japanese Anime 'pre-turn of the century' that were never meant to be ripped or digitally converted in the 1st place either through the use of consuming them through piracy or torrenting. I could only imagine one would get a head ache trying to consume any Japanese Anime in such dodgy internet quality. Most of the shit I have listed above I own mixed between Japanese Laserdiscs, Western domestic DVDs and Blu-ray remasters, and even a few on rare old school Japanese VCDs. Some of them I even own also on VHS both domestic and Japanese as well but also tend to end up eventually re-buying copies of the OVAs again either on DVDs, Blu-ray, or snagging copies on Japanese Laserdiscs when I can find them pre-owned for sale that have been at least taken care of well over the years (no scratches or abuse to them). As long as one has actual decent physical copies of any Japanese Anime OVAs from the early 2000s and before, it's almost always peak animated entertainment to re-watch because this shit is timeless. |

If you thought a "few" looked better than modern Anime, chances are high they were already professionally remastered on physical media in the 1st place. Where even often times numerous "pre-turn of the century" Anime titles I have experienced Officially remastered in the past have actually ended up ruining the original aesthetics over their original releases. From over-denoising and filtering, linework, and even original texturing simply to do things like upscaling the picture. Where a vast majority of Anime from the past is not even professionally remastered in the 1st place and when converted to some digital format the outcome usually turns out like crap. Out of curiosity a while back I wanted to actually see how Users watch retro Anime from the past simply relying on Torrents. The conclusion I came to is that those who only pirate or torrent just about any Anime from over 20+ years ago (that has never had some Quality Official professional re-release on physical discs) have basically been experiencing extremely shitty Anime quality all their life. A prime example is "Slayers". While even the official Funimation release on DVD is basically bottom tier quality as is for an Anime series originally released in the mid 90s then eventually officially put on DVDs in the 2000s, I use it as my baseline for comparison. So for my experiment I ended up grabbing every torrent that I could find on the internet one day of the 1st season of "Slayers" using PikPak (even grabbing Torrents that no longer had peer or seeds by using magnetic links) from Japanese RAW video files obviously ripped from Japanese DVDs, to remuxes of Western releases, to even finding someone on IRC willing to upload just for me ripped DVD ISO file copies of the Central Park Media releases they had grabbed over a decade ago off the internet. Simply just watching the 1st episode of even the ISO files I noticed unbearable digital artifacts to wobbly animation scenes to even stuttering during animated panning while even trying out multiple media players that support deinterlacing to detelecine with other filter options to make video play back smoother. My experience with copies of the Anime on other video file formats such as AVI, ogm, mp4, and even mkv, etc... were far worse when it came to video play back with far more annoying things such as extremely irritating digital artifacts to even shotty out of sync audio quality and far worse wobbly animation and stuttering during panning scenes. I am sure I am not the only one who cares about this, just I am probably the most vocal about it on this platform. lol |

I don't think something that makes changes is inherently a "bastardized adaptation", but here are my favorite OVAs The Jojo's Bizarre Adventure OVAs from Studio APPP are really good and the creative liberties they take to fit the story into a smaller episode count ends up actually working quite well in some cases. There are some shots that I would actively say are better than the DavidPro version which stays pretty strict to the paneling of the manga while the OVA changes how some scenes are viewed to better fit the medium of animation (such as Iggy's introduction). The Thus Spoke Kishibe Rohan OVAs have also been really solid, taking some of Araki's one shots and animating faithfully with some additional content added that references other parts of the Jojo series for long time fans. Out of the existing 13 manga chapters, only 4 of them have been fully animated but they are really good and pretty faithful to the source. |
This post is brought to you by your local transfem gamer goblin. Will not tolerate bigotry and will fight against "anti-woke" sentiment to make the anime community a safer place. |
