Which anime OST is actually superb? Even outside of the show?

It's extremely rare when I actually download OSTs from shows or movies in general, even ones I love, so I'd like to know which ones have caught your eye.

Rather than bring up old tired favorites like Cowboy Bebop and Samurai Champloo, I have to admit that the Aria soundtrack makes me want to delve into the anime despite being a fan of the manga.

I don't know. I have particular tastes so I like the OST of Ghost Hunt and Ghost Stories.

That's just me though.

I think the Hyperdimension Neptunia and Senran Kagura OST is very good.

There's a lot of shows which has good ost, but to pick one show which is broadly known for it's ost, than it has to be my favourite one which is Bleach.

All of the Mushoku Tensei openings from the 1st season that weren't an actual opening (and that changed almost every episode), but rather worldbuilding with an OST behind it.They felt like magic.

@Zarutaku Every song on the show was amazing, but the only one I remember right now by memory is the Zoltraak one.

The Girls Last Tour OST is so peaceful and relaxing and magical and emotional. I listen to it often.

The RahXephon 3-OST set was really, really good as standalone music.

Probably Cardcaptor Sakura. Despite it being one of my favorite anime series of all time, I think the soundtrack on its own stands alone even without the actual anime.

Dragon Maid and Azumanga Daioh's OST's. Same composer, similar music. It's cute and simple type music but also fun, bouncy and fantastical
My waifu is the most wonderful waifu. Mai Valentine.

We're freaking out that we're running out of time, but to do what? Should i stop and think of that? Is there something i could do to slow it down? Live in a day for once, instead of watch it sprinting by

the Monogatari Series OST. nothing but bangers throughout, nothing feels like it's just canned background noise, every piece is setting a very specific mood and vibe. such an important part to make a show that is 99% dialogue never feel dull.

There are probably a lot of good ones. The OST that I'm currently enjoying the most is definitely Solo Leveling. It has so many great tracks.

The Made in Abyss soundtrack is one of the best. The double LP goes for hundreds of USD which is why I don't have one.

@Briekimchi Not a huge fan of RahXephon, but that track's chorus is SO good. The payoff after the somewhat sirupy 80s verse is crazy. Holy funk guitar 🙌

Another stupidly funky track from the same era is Casshern Sin's OP. The guitar parts at 2:37 have no right being so sweaty, it should be illegal.

Anyway, if I had to pick only one, it'd be City Hunter. There's a whole album of certified city pop bangers in that OST, and the instrumental tracks are stellar too.

Anything by Yoko Kanno and Kevin Penkin. Yuki Kajiura's soundtrack for Kara no Kyoukai is excellent too. Contrary to popular opinion, I don't find her music for Madoka Magica to be this great, but it's good.

I just finished Aria and I confirm it has one of the greatest OSTs, starting with the main theme AQUA but not only that.

The other anime with more than one track (quite impressive, since having one remarkable track is already quite rare) among my favorite anime songs are:

Devilman Crybaby
Violet Evergarden
Spice & Wolf remake
Natsume Yuujinchou
Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Monsters (surprisingly quite a few great tracks)
Girls Band Cry
Gimai Seikatsu
Hanashura
Kemono no Souja Erin
Chikyuu Bouei Kazoku

- Inuyasha
- Koi Kaze
- Higurashi
- Shiki
- Mahoutsukai no Yome
- Ergo Proxy

Those are the ones to which I'd extend the distinction you specify, above all others.

Inuyasha in particular as it isn't just my favorite music in all of anime, but favorite in life, period.

And just for fun and additional material, and because I watch a lot of seasonals these past four plus years, although I wouldn't put them quite as high up as that, more recent series which have similarly wowed me in that department and become fast favorites are Tengoku Daimakyou and Arknights.

@Deathko I love all duel songs but I had to choose one it would be Last Evolution (vs Nanami). As for non duel songs, Zettai Unmei Mokushiroku lol

@Galletita Great picks, Nanami is iconic.

So many of the instrumental pieces are great and eiher unsettling, or melancholic. This one always gets me:

@WatchTillTandava To this day, I loved every time Naraku appeared just from that music ALONE. LOL
I'd add the instrumental tracks from Noir in here as well. They just ratchet up the tension of that show, & add to the coolness as well.

I regularly listen to the Initial D soundtracks. It's the reason Eurobeat has been my most listened to genre on Spotify for years now. The other anime soundtracks that I've actually spent time listening to outside of the anime would be Ghost in the Shell Stand Alone Complex, FLCL, Cowboy Bebop, .Hack/Sign, Beck and Inu Yasha. Probably one or two I'm missing, but these are the ones that stick out.
