@ComeInReiAsuka I wasn't around in the community until Fall 2014, but from what I've seen, even back in 2012 the Toonami core fans were running rampant around the anime fandom, all talking about how they thought Cowboy Bebop was "the greatest anime ever".

The Christians were very much around back in the day and censoring anime, like with 4kids. The new performative activists came around 2016 when everything got all political in the world, and the censors were around too. However, since 2019, they are now trying to do this from inside the fandom.

I will agree that in many ways, anime discussions have gotten worse.

From what I've seen, it appears that anime generally has trended to get better until 2016, when heavy Western influence kicked in. Luckily, in 2023, the creators of Onimai decided to stand up to these localizers, get to be the most popular anime in over a decade, and inspired some other studios to abandon Western influence for some time, giving us other great anime like Oshi no Ko and MahoAko.
@ForgotEyeWasHere I'm talking about the real anime fans.

Most people on /a/ and the anime board i used to hang out with always made fun of the Adult Swim crowd.

Always have.

You don't debate with people online. Especially when everyone else is 100% wrong.

@ComeInReiAsuka Glad to hear that! I saw online before I joined the anime fandom that Japanese (and even many European) fans seemed to love moe stuff like K-On! while the American fans and Toonami core hated it. It seems that /a/ heavily varies in quality by which anime each thread is about. You can see this specifically by their reactions to stuff like Onimai today. The battle shonen threads often have people whining about Onimai being a "transgender anime", while ecchi-related threads are usually more positive towards it.

In 2014, when I first joined the anime fandom, I don't remember most of the /a/ threads supporting Adult Swim crowd stuff, but I do remember some Cowboy Bebop threads showing up. In them, there were some typical elitist, Adult Swim fans. I also remember some threads about Ore Twintails, which is actually how I found out about the anime.

I'm glad I was already interested in Japan and its culture long before getting into anime, so I didn't "need to watch" stereotypical "gateway" anime first like Cowboy Bebop and Naruto. I just went straight to stuff like Love Live.

Welcome to the Internet. It has always been like this as far as I remember (22 years so of course I can't talk for the entire history of anime or whatever), maybe it is somewhat worse nowadays because of the sheer mainstream explosion that anime has had in general.

A lot of people who don't even use MAL lowkey are already familliar with unhinged users who linger around here.
I saw some people that shouldn't be named who rant about being supremely downbad for drawings or confessing about things which are extreme even for me?

The randomly heated forums here may be offensive at times but I find it funny.
This is just the "pack' of joining a community of Anime fans online, you get people of different types whether you like it or not

Believe me the forums back in the day were pretty bad too, and by back in the day I mean early 2010s when I first got into anime.

@KiliianSleipnir This was mostly supposed to be a jab against derangedx29 who claims to know the situation with his omniscient age of 32 years. You are way more qualified to assess the situation if you have been there from the beginning.

I guess back then the discourse had not been brutalised yet as people valued connecting with over people via a new technology over a shared hobby.
@Hiyajo-san and let's just say, i still remember Gundam Wing on DVD being 'holy crap this is hot stuff!' new and fresh! in the 'Blockbuster Video' and other rental places' catalogues. because dubbed anime in the 90's... was NOT easily found in a 'storefront'... it was pretty much all mail order catalogues still. as Amazon was born in '94 and only sold books to start with and Ebay was named AuctionWeb in '95 when it got going as one guy's hobby/petty cash/pocket money/pet project.

i do believe, in my memories! just me! the dub vs sub debate IS THE OLDEST ONE in otakudom here in the US. it REALLY was started as... 'which one is "this listing" in "this catalogue" sub or dub? because it doesn't say. anybody ordered from 'this' catalogue before? do they actually answer their phones or is it an answering machine?' sure, ROBOTECH from Harmony Gold was my 1st anime (VHS tapes 1&2) in the Summer of '90. so i'm biased for it, even with the mashing together Macross and chopping all the pieces up n splicing them together gripes folks had in the 90's... but... even the 'i want to enjoy it in Japanese!' fans... basically had to BUY region 2 DVD players from Japan 2nd hand or bootleg VHS tapes shipped to your house in a plain brown paper wrapper around the tapes... maybe you were lucky to get a box with peanuts! padding the tapes. and you were DEFINITELY lucky if there WERE subtitles on all your tapes... because honestly, trying to use a video editing imprinting machine to PUT subs into a Japanese tape... basically meant you WERE getting a bootleg copy. just with what you HOPED were somewhat accurate and decently TIMED subtitles.

ye olden days... weren't golden days. US anime in the beginning was Wild Wild West no rules. no standards. and NO trust in the vendors by the public. because if you got gypped? bout all you could do is call the STATE Better Business Bureau the vendor's snail mail address was in... and HOPED it wasn't a PO Box and they had a real-deal physical address to a building. either that or you had some kinda 'in' with your local video rental place and could convince your contact to order 1 or 2 pieces of anime for you to rent.
just an ol school American otaku enjoyin the life. don't sass me kiddies, i've been otaku probably since before you were born. leave me in peace and i won't bother you either.

It is actually very easy to have discussions with people without engaging in a flamewar.

You mean the recent influx of obnoxious, preachy sophists here who omnislash every single quote they respond to into isolated sentences because—beneath all the flowery prose and narcissistic spiel—they aren't intellectually capable of following context or addressing the monolithic point of the argument they're allegedly "deconstructing"? Yes, they're all beyond annoying. It's like Reddit had nuclear meltdown and contaminated the surrounding region as a consequence.

I honestly just moved my deeper show discussions to a closed Discord server. Talking about any anime seriously in an open internet space now is basically impossible.
People make it all about themselves, not the shows.

It wasn't always THIS bad. You'd get those "your anime sucks <trollface>" dudes, but it was still possible to get somewhere with others.

Last sentence is definitely a very significant factor. It doesn't help that short-form garbage like X and TikTok have conditioned people into thinking that reading anything longer than 2 sentences is some sort of agonizing labour, let alone typing them. The short-form format also tends to promote and be a breeding ground for extremism due to the reduced space you have to articulate an opinion. It pushes folks towards making radical, sweeping statements they wouldn't have otherwise. Which then is replied to by also radical and sweeping statements, and the process continues from there. I do wish people would learn or in some cases re-learn how to properly post on a forum instead of bringing that sort of stuff here.
@Maythews That's actually a really good point. How the stressed fast pace short form content and limited word counts actually leads to people being more extreme. I hadn't thought about that before

@Nvaier that's what happens when normal people discover anime and talk about it on social media.

On message boards? Grifting is much harder.

@SushiSuperLover at this rate the only reason I use this garbage website (other than keeping track of my shit) is because sxhitter and shittok are a faster way to melt your brain than putting raw plutonium against your head for 5 hours.
nothing is stopping me from just trolling the forums aside from the mods probing my ass while people here repub unfunny garbage from soyjak party with zero consequence

honestly yeah, this + the fact that all social media sites (large ones) actively profit off of conflict to get advertisers. QAnon wasn't clamped down on facebook because it drove traffic to the site. They also profited off of communal violence in South Asia IIRC

What makes it worse is when these same users make their 6th schizo post of the day, it still gets replies from the same 46 bored chuds who say nothing of consequence and think their meaningless drivel is being read when it's not; thus feeding the schizo post and encouraging the user to keep doing it. Then better threads get buried by all the schizo posts from the same four people.

Since people can't get punched or shot over the internet, they're simply more honest in online forums. That's why I prefer it over IRL discourse. I can tell a Christian parent that I praise the Nashville shooter without getting slapped. Not to say that I don't say edge lord shit like that IRL. I have the scars to prove it.
Liking loli hentai makes me a pedo? Then not liking ecchi makes you a FAGGOT.
