Sailor Moon + Homura.
Damn, really? With what I've seen of your other tastes, I'd have thought you'd enjoy it. It has its problems though, and depending on when you became aware of it I can see why someone would dislike it.

@CC I've seen three shows involving Gen Urobuchi. They're all rated 4 in my list, I gave up after that... I tend to not enjoy some of the "dark" manga/anime of the 2000s/2010s. Texhnolyze (so edgy...), Osayumi Punpun (misery porn) or Madoka (kinda misery porn too, lets be honest) are probably the biggest ones I hated. I think it was just the general trend of the 2000s, emo music was my bane too in highschool. I saw Madoka when I was already in my twenties, and had a quite limited but real experience of mahou shoujo (Sailor Moon, Utena, Magical Doremi...) |

Shortening the duration of each round would be a good decision, since most of the votes are cast on the first day or within the next half day. If you’re considering shortening the time, you could try reducing it from 48 hrs to 36 hrs for this round. That way, you can observe users reactions to the updated time limit before the next tournament. |

@nirererin okay, I will try it. But I will be away tomorrow, so I can end the round after I'm back home. ^^ (which would be earlier than 48 hours) But you're right, 48 hours are maybe a bit too long. Edit: Maybe I'm ending this round before I'm going. This would be for the best. |

I think 36 hours works when it's clear that every trailing character has no chance to catch up. If there's still a tie or close matchup, I think it would be better to give a score update and maybe a round extension so the late voters have a chance to make the final decisions. |

I completely understand what you mean, I have my own issues with his writing even from the properties I do enjoy (Madoka included). I was in a fraught time in my life when I watched Madoka, though, especially Rebellion (which I think is the best of the series) and it had some content in it that was relatable for me at the time. As relatable as magical anime things can be, but you know, the feelings through the magical anime stuff. That said, -YaoiBoy- said: No Psycho-Pass, though, so there is still hope :p There's one scene in Psycho-Pass that I think is enough to put someone who already doesn't like Urobuchi's works off pretty immediately. He really does have this sort of fetish for showing the rot and misery of humanity but in a way I sometimes find lazy and offensive. Not offensive like, "Wow, I'm offended!" but more with regards to my storytelling sensibilities. Anyway, sorry this isn't on topic! がんばってください @ the magical girls, results soon I think? |

Sakura was a full on force of nature in this tournament. There were two points where the vote was so close that a single person could have eliminated Sailor Moon (albeit requiring an unholy alliance for the first close call), but every matchup with Sakura was a decisive annihilation in her favour. I guess it helps that unlike Serena, she didn't have 8 other very popular compadres to take up slots and stir resentment at Sailor Moon's popularity. Also, if this was a Death Battle, Sakura would win because the one thing she has over the other girls is versatility. Others magical girls have a few powerful attacks they're known for, but Sakura's a fully powered D&D mage or endgame Metroidvania protagonist with how many tricks she has and how many combinations she can pull off. Also, she's no ditz, and is as cunning and observant as an adventure game player when dealing with the Clow Cards. Because her series is so calm and slice-of-life, it's easy to underestimate how dangerous she could really be. An unsurprising, but well-deserved champion. So, exit questionnaire: 1. Sailor Moon. Though it was a cooler Japanese version of Disney's Snow White at first. 2. I mean, I didn't realize girls' shows could be so violent and therefore, awesome at the time. It was certainly more exciting than Disney Princesses. Heck, it started my love of horror movies (Nightmare on Elm Street 4: The Dream Master even feels like a proto-Sailor Moon). 3. At the time I discovered magical girls, I was impressed to see girliness portrayed as a strength. Sometimes, I still have internalized misogyny about that, even though my own social circles has shown me how brave and kind girly girls can really be (hot take: often more so than masculine men). It's where I started learning to believe in "I fight for my friends" as a mantra. 4. Our champion. I've already explained her strengths, but one other underestimated aspect of her is her Nelvana dub incarnation. For those who lean more tomboyish or masculine, sometimes the stereotypical super girly, high-pitched protagonist doesn't always connect, so it's nice to have leads like Nelvana Sakura or Cure Sky around. Also, the first song I learned to sing out of my own initiative was one of her image songs from Cardcaptors. 5. I hoped that the unpleasantness could have been eliminated earlier, and that Cure Sky didn't lose to someone I have no clue about, and that Cure Wink didn't get matched up against the Force of Nature herself so she could at least get to the 2nd round, but otherwise, yes. The Elite Four are icons, we had a decent variety, Cure Butterfly at least survived to Round 2, and Berry Blossom made Top 16, which is amazing for such an under-the-radar character. I gained a new appreciation for her, even. She's this random nerd who doesn't even know what she's doing or what the point of being a magical girl is, but makes some new frenemies in Acro Trip and has fun re-enacting Sam Sheepdog and Ralph Wolf style fights. 6. Sign me up for an idol tournament. I would definitely want to nominate Mitsuki Koyama and Kanon Shibuya. |

Now let's all listen to and sing Cardcaptor Sakura OP1 to honor the winner :p I'm glad that Sakura won :) I obviously feel at least some affection for Usagi / Sailor Moon, considering my long history with the 90s series in particular, but I've said quite a few times that I don't particularly care about Sailor Senshi overall - it's mostly the entertaining antagonists and monsters-of-the-week that make me like the series as much as I do, so I never really saw a winner in any of them, even though I do like some (Venus, Jupiter, Pluto) significantly more than the others. Homura in 3rd place is nice too :) I like Pluto, but I don't think she has as much of an iconic presence, so the results seem fair from that perspective. Questionnaire: 1. What was your first Mahou Shoujo? Sailor Moon. 2. Was it also the anime that makes you love Mahou Shoujo? Both Sailor Moon and Cardcaptor Sakura contributed the most so far :) 3. What do you like the most about the Mahou Shoujo-Genre? That's a tough question. I don't think I like anything specific about this genre in itself - I'm just always "hunting" for personally meaningful and impactful experiences, but I'm just as happy to enjoy something cute and entertaining. Mahou Shoujo seems like a genre that has the potential to provide both. But if I absolutely had to give an answer...maybe transformations? :p 4. Who is your favorite Mahou Shoujo? Our winner, Sakura Kinomoto. 5. Are you happy with the results of this tournament? Yes, quite happy :) none of the characters I dislike made it to the finals, and the character I like a lot won. Although, I kind of wish Sailor Venus defeated Sailor Moon back during their match-up and took the 2nd place instead. 6. For all of you who participated in more than one tournament of mine, maybe you saw a pattern. First a Waifu War, then a spin-off, than a Waifu War, then a spin-off etc. What other spin-off tournaments do you want to see? Or there could be several groups competing during the same contest based on their hair color, just in case one group won't have enough participants to justify a whole tournament. Nothing else comes to mind at the time. @TheMinkalex thanks for organizing :) ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- CC said: There's one scene in Psycho-Pass that I think is enough to put someone who already doesn't like Urobuchi's works off pretty immediately. CC said: He really does have this sort of fetish for showing the rot and misery of humanity but in a way I sometimes find lazy and offensive. Not offensive like, "Wow, I'm offended!" but more with regards to my storytelling sensibilities. Makes sense :) I assume by "lazy" in this case you mean overly gratuitous and without much justification. As for my own two cents: I'd say I'm more concerned about the overall purpose behind it rather than if it's fitting or not. I want the character(s) involved to have something intimate and personally meaningful to show while wallowing in said rot and misery, instead of just being an emotionally numb and empty poster child for human cruelty and ugliness, and for it to not be devoid of its own twisted beauty. The whole thing can be over the top if needed :) what's scarier is when some things are just rot for the sake of rot, with nothing to hold on to, not even beautiful self-destruction. You know, showing the darkness of humanity for the sake of showing the darkness of humanity in an endless self-perpetuating cycle? No meaning in pain or beauty in suffering - just raw brutality, decay and emotionally dead cruelty. I can't help but bring up The Sopranos as an example, even though it's not related to anime :) but it's a well-known series and it's just such a perfect example of what I'm talking about and why hate that series so much! There is just nothing there! Absolutely nothing. It's dead, empty and cruel, with nothing to hold on to. Thankfully, none of the Urobuchi's works I've encountered so far are like that :) so, I can live with edgy misery porn or whatever lol as long as I'm not subjected to that hopeless Soprano-ish cruelty. And speaking of Urobuchi works: All of that intimacy and meaning I mentioned above is what I personally couldn't find in Madoka Magica :) in a few of his other works that I'm familiar with (like Psycho-Pass or Saya no Uta VN), or that he contributed to (Togainu no Chi BL VN), it always felt that despite some indulgence in what you could call rot and misery or "torture porn", or whatever, and some theatrics in presentation, what characters went through still felt very personal. But in Madoka Magica everything felt somehow detached, as if all the drama, suffering and pain existed separate from the characters themselves, like a window-dressing similar to how the witches were portrayed in an unusual way - just as an aesthetic and nothing more. Like the characters were "role-playing" their suffering instead of living it. Only Homura managed to break that impression from time to time and on a very rare occasion, and it's probably one of the reasons I liked her the most. For some reason, none of it felt real or genuine, and it proved impossible for me to connect with it. CC said: Anyway, sorry this isn't on topic! I'm also guilty of responding and derailing it further :p |

Re: Urobuchi, what bothered me about Madoka is that aside from Homura, the other girls were mostly cardboard cutouts that only existed to have plot happen to them. I must say, the most memorable part of the tournament was Sailor Moon and Madoka getting matched up as two big titans of magical girl anime, only for Usagi to completely annihilate Madoka. To be honest, I never really liked Madoka because she came off as a "Wins by doing nothing" character like Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. The fact that Homura, on the other hand, gave Sailor Moon real competition shows where the real power behind the throne lies. Also, I personally don't consider this derailing, and I did wish people talked more about the anime and characters they liked or disliked in the tournament. Was tempted to annoy people with Berry Blossom promotion a few times. |

2. Was it also the anime that makes you love Mahou Shoujo?
3. What do you like the most about the Mahou Shoujo-Genre?
4. Who is your favorite Mahou Shoujo?
5. Are you happy with the results of this tournament?
6. For all of you who participated in more than one tournament of mine, maybe you saw a pattern. First a Waifu War, then a spin-off, than a Waifu War, then a spin-off etc. What other spin-off tournaments do you want to see? (If you want a sequel of a pre-existing tournament, why not? ^^)
The next spin-off tournament after Waifu War 3 will be a
Tomboy-Edition
@TheMinkalex 1) Sailor Moon. Never even thought I'd like it, I was already a grown man, for God's sake. 2) I don't know that I "love" the Genre' all that much. I watch a few every now & then. 3) I usually like the ones that turn the formula upside down, honestly 4) Still Sailor Moon. With Madoka characters a close second. 5) Yes. Ok, That is a Spoiler I care more about! ROFLMAO |

There's one scene in Psycho-Pass that I think is enough to put someone who already doesn't like Urobuchi's works off pretty immediately. I won't say what on the forums, and it's a small thing in terms of story, but it's really just prototypical of what I don't like about his writing.

I tried to message you with my answer to avoid derailing this further, but couldn't u_u I'll watch it because I heard good things about S1, but this somewhat confirms my expectation. This said, I can survive a couple instances of bad or tasteless writing in a show. I'm in the mood to watch anime these days anyway, so I'll try to watch it before summer ends, and come back to you when I'm done! |

Are you happy with the results of this tournament? 1- Sailor Moon is my first exposure to the genre when I was very young (like, 4 or 5), but the first mahou shojo I watched was Magical Doremi when I was in my early teens. 2- Utena, best anime ever. 3- I like how it carries this whole heritage of questionning gender norms and sexuality. Also, cool transformation scenes. 4- I guess I'll go with Utena, but Juri from the same show is truly the best (wether she's a mahou shoujo or not is debatable, tho. I'd say she isn't) 5- I'm okay with the results, they were honestly predictable. Slightly surprised Sakura crushed Sailor Moon. However, I must say the shadow of (the deplorable) Mahou Shoujo ni Akogarete loomed over this whole competition. AD has always been prone to some FotM and/or gooning bias, but some of the votes were just painful to watch. If this show is going to be the revival of mahou shoujo's popularity, the genre is probably better dead, chilling with mecha in our collective memory. |

YAY SAKURA! Questionnaire: 1. Cardcaptor Sakura 2. Partially, it was Healin’ Good Pretty Cure that solidified my love for the genre 3. The hopeful tone, the aesthetics, the themes of love and hope enduring! 4. Sakura Kinomoto and Haruka Haruno 5. I’m happy with the winner, though I do wish Haruka had lasted longer 6. Magical boys please! |

@Lucifrost Probably Sailor Moon or Precure but with bishonens and gay undertones instead of lesbian undertones. Don't forget the trasformations. |

@Deathko Yes, pretty much. I mean characters like Tsubasa/Cure Wing from Pretty Cure; boys who fit the magical girl archetype. |

@Saeryen and maybe the entire cast of Cute High Earth Defense Club LOVE! ^^
@TheMinkalex Only one I can thing of besides Tuxedo Mask is the guy who actually turns into a Magical Girl in Magical Girl Raising Project. But he is actually one of the better characters in that show. Seriously, in this contest I ALMOST voted for Cranberry once. LOL |

@Saeryen But Tsubasa is like the 2nd male in 20 years of Precure. And how many other shows like Cute High Earth Defense Club have you seen? There simply aren't enough magical boys in existence for this kind of tournament. |
