Ever since Egghead even started, this is the episode that everyone was waiting to be adapted.... Kuma's backstory. Still had to wrap up the whole Bonney thing from the end of last episode, but from the second half on, it's just Kuma, Kuma, and more Kuma... a pained Kuma, that is. Like man, the way Kuma’s dad just got offed like it was nothing really shows how messed up the higher-ups are. Kuma went through so much shit, it was hell for him. And even after he “died,” they still kept messing with his body like it was some toy.

And the worst part has to be The Pacifista, which are now one of the Government’s big weapons, are literally based on him and his whole tribe… the same tribe the WG wiped out. Also wild how the Nika stuff was told through their family. Makes you think they were maybe Joy Boy’s crew or something. But yeah, in case that wasn't enough for you, the Tenryubito literally held a hunting game for fun. As if we needed more proof that the WG is totally fucked up.

If a country isn’t affiliated it’s not just that they’re poor or unprotected, nah their people can legally be enslaved, and apparently they can be hunted for sport too. What the actual FUCK. And that's just the start of this fucked up story. It only gets more fucked up from here. These next seven weeks man... I really ain't ready.

Kuma is already strongest contentender for most tragic backstory. Nah, if this series held a competiton he'd win. It's almost too much.

Then again, One Piece is all about being over the top. And this episode illustrated the insanity of the Tenryubito like no other before. The death or better said murder of Kuma's father for such trivial reasons happened so quick, was so petty, so absurd, that it's almost comical. Thankfully we didn't have to see how Kuma's mom passed away(and their Diddy parties)And this kind of tragedy is merely the tip of iceberg. Over centuries the Tenryubito had countless who spent their last days like that or worse.

And we ain't done yet, of course the master race holds a native hunting competiton every 3 years, because why not? It's just people of unaffiliated nations, they're less than nothing. That shit is next level. It's sickening that the Navy is there to protect the celestial garbage. Bless the Revolutionary Army who's fighting the messed up system.

Garling with the banana hair, lol. We his hair after he executed Myosgard, still surprised that he ain't a redhead..so where's the mommy? Also, nevermind the hair, the color scheme for the fit is crazy 😂

Good to see Ivankov. Kuma meeting him as a child before Dragon is pretty interesting. It's funny that we keep running into this guy when we're in "hell" just when we need someone to raise our hopes. Love that he's always in high spirits. Based character.

Btw after reading Kuma's backstory in the manga it occured to me how ironic his introduction was. The pulled up alongside Doffy who was a Tenryubito before. I doubt Oda had all that in mind back in chapter 233. But cool nonetheless.

That eye damage was embarrassing for Sanji.

Garling looks goofy with blond hair.

We finally got to Kuma’s backstory. The voice acting really hit, it's hard to watch.

We've only just started with Kuma's backstory and I'm already fucked up all over again. This stretch of chapters was legit just straight depression so I don't look forward to reliving it with sad music and voice acting.

BTW, I'm not ready for the next episodes, I bet they're gonna be sad :(

I knew I was not ready for this episode even when I knew all of the context from the manga, but I did not expected how well they would handle this episode I wonder whom directed this episode because the direction and how they handle that scene with kuma's dad lifting up the spirit not to give up and then sudden twist and switch up from happy moments to harsh reality was perfectly handled. I cannot wait to cry once again next weeks to come.

Why did they pick Okamoto Nobuhiko to voice kid Kuma? It should've been a girl, he's only 4. I didn't like hearing Nobuhiko's voice come out of Kuma's mouth, he's not good for this.
4/5. Pretty good pacing for another 1 chapter adaptation. I wonder if TOEI will be able to give me the same peaks as the manga... I have no faith in them.

Some of the Vice Admirals come down to the town center to try and back up St. Saturn, but the dude insists that he doesn’t need it. He casually knocks Bonney out of his hands and when Sanji tries to save Bonney, he knocks him down and he’s bleeding despite never getting touched directly by anything. Is this the power of St. Saturn’s Devil Fruit, or is this Haki? He takes the sword out of his body and HIS WOUND INSTANTLY HEALS?! NANI?!

Kizaru says that he won’t be able to move for a while, since Luffy kicked his ass, and then St. Saturn has the AUDACITY to try to interrupt Luffy’s peaceful slumber, but Franky comes in the clutch knowing that nobody interrupts the Fifth Emperor and gets away with it. St. Saturn uses his powers to immobilize the entire group and then goes on about how Kuma is the sole survivor of the Buccaneer people, who committed some crime against the world.

That’s when we see a flashback of Kuma talking to Bonney about the Warrior of Liberation, and then we get into Kuma’s past at last. This starts 47 years ago, meaning that Kuma is currently 47 years old. He was born to a Buccaneer dad, Clapp, and a normal looking mother. The doctor promises not to reveal Kuma’s lineage. We see a cool transition image showcasing the love between Bonney and Kuma, which is just so beautiful to see. Four years later, the Government takes the family to Mariajoa as slaves.

The three are separated, and it seems that Kuma’s mother passes away. Clapp talks about the Warrior of Liberation, a legend that has been passed down from the Buccaneer heritage, but while he’s dancing, a Celestial Dragon shoots him from behind. Five years later, the Celestial Dragonas host a human hunting competition in the unaffiliated island known as God Valley, while the rules are being explained, Kuma escapes, and the other slaves in his cell are forced to bring him back. Kuma tries to resist, but the numbers are too great. That’s when Emporio Ivankov and Ginny, who are also slaves, come in talking about a plan that they have.

I’M LOOKING FORWARD TO MORE ONE PIECE!

I 100% knew Saturn didn’t care one bit about getting stabbed by Bonney, judging by his complete lack of reaction in the last episode. He confirmed it this episode with his own words, “If I minded getting stabbed, I would’ve just dodged, twats”.

Stabbing aside, on top of all the powers I mentioned in my review of the last episode, he apparently has instant regeneration too? Goodness gracious, how many hacks do these Five Elders have? At this point, it’s just plain hacking, literally. Can't imagine them down.

Hax aside, oh how proud I am of Luffy for how much he's grown, beating the heck out of Borsalino, to the point the latter was temporarily paralyzed, followed by Borsalino just casually telling Saturn "sorry man, got rekt, can't move 4 a bit", haha. I swear, this character's a mix of aura farming & comedy.

Luffy aside, we’re finally getting the long-awaited, heartbreaking backstory of Kuma. I’m really glad he apparently managed to escape with both Ivankov and Ginny, since, as we know, he’s one of the founding members of the Revolutionary Army. Still, I’m quite curious how they all escaped, hope we see more!

So the backstory begins. Manga people are saying this is crazy, so I'm excited. The child Kuma has quite the scream. Attack on Titan worthy. Also that shot with the blood on his face was quite something. Is Ginny Ivankov's brother? That's pretty interesting. Also liked the line at the end. Good stuff.

This episode hit me so hard. The start of Kuma's backstory body slammed me. So much emotional damage. I've been bawling my eyes out from Kuma's dancing with Bonney with the pencil sketch animation (nice touch), from young Kuma finding out that his Mom has already passed away, up until Kuma witnessing his dad getting shot in front of his eyes... The blood splattering onto his face. It was absolutely brutal.

So St. Figarland Garling had blonde hair? Who would have thought.

The situation for the Strawhats on Egghead is getting worse & worse where there's no means of escape now that a terrifying Elder is on the island. These next episodes are going to be extremely painful to watch, mainly because of Kuma's backstory. Can I make it out before the story resumes to the current timeline? How much more emotional damage would I have to endure by then?

@Nerdason I think that was intentional. Oda and toei wanted to portray just how much those Tenryubito dont care about human lives. He just casually up and killed him outta nowhere cus he was making noise. Trying to cheer up a child nonetheless.
