Randomly decided to look at the character names and see what they mean.

Can anyone familiar with the Japanese language and culture chime in?

Here's what I figured out with my toddler-level Japanese:

Nico Wakatsuki:
Wakatsuki (若月) literally means "young moon" or "little moon." A nice, witch-y name.
Nico doesn't have a kanji, but I assume it's just meant to sound like giggling/smirking (niconico) and that's cute. And it fits her goofy, sunny disposition.

Morihito "Moi" Otogi
In Morihito (守仁), the "mori" part means "protect," and "hito" part sounds the same as "person" (人). So it sounds like "protector person."

Kanshi Kazamatsuri
Kazamatsuri (風祭) literally means "wind festival." Obvious name for someone with wind magic.
Kanshi sounds the same as "to surveil" or "to keep an eye on."

Nemu Miyao
Miyao sounds like the English "meow." She's a cat, duh.
Nemu sounds like "to sleep" (nemuru). She turns back into human when she falls asleep.

Please feel free to correct these or add more.

Thank you for all your work to look this up.

But what does this have to do with the anime?
Note: I don’t lazily watch 3-5 episodes, biasedly compare to other anime, or unfairly judge by surface level similarities. With every anime I start, I watch the entire series, both Japanese Sub & English Dub, then judge each anime based on what they present, to give an honest and fair rating.

The characters' names in anime are mostly related to the plot or the character's personality so it's fun to know the meaning behind their names. That's it

Well, I'm just glad more people are starting to notice this show, is far superior than a lot of over hyped garbage around this place in recent years.

Yeah, there's an obvious meaning behind the names.

Morihito's surname 乙木 Otogi sounds like the first part of おとぎ話 Otogi-banashi, Fairy Tales

Also, less of a hidden meaning but a lot of their classmates have obvious puns relating to their personality, to the point that Shinohara Kenta-sensei quickly ran out of classmates to name/design because he used them all up for those gags 😭

Kowashi Hara (the poop guy from Episode 5):
Hara sounds the same as "stomach."
Kowashi sounds like "to break" (kowasu).

Nice one. I recognize that word, now that you mention it.

This is the kind of stuff I'm talking about, would like to see more of that in the thread.

I remember character names in Komi-san had a similar gag, and it also must've been difficult to come up with 100+ names like that, thanks to the story premise of making 100 friends.

That makes a whole lot more sense, thank you for explaining patiently.

I didn’t force you to respond to me either, but you did.

Don’t say silly things.

@keinboesewicht well, others responded to me with patience and grace, explaining to me the point of the names, so I appreciate and respect them, but not you, the mean person 😜

@keinboesewicht I was teasing you, not serious, hence the laughing emoji

idk but seems random, almost every Japanese name symbolizes some word. Thats just their culture, but hey if thats your thing go for it

Sure. All the more reason to actually think about what the names mean. These characters were given those specific names for specific reasons. Especially so in this anime, I think.
