So a couple days ago I made a thread called Have you ever "suffered from success" regarding anime? where I told the story that there was a group of friends that was always kicking me from rooms on AMQ.
Today, we ended up in the same room by coincidence, and nine songs in, that was the result:

I was singing JoJo no Kimyou na Bouken Part 5: Ougon no Kaze ED on chat since I actually like that song very much, then this interaction happened:

Sadly he ragequit before I could post my last message, I guess the Dio Brando impression was a bit too much.

But that got me thinking: How much anime is having watched a lot of anime?
My numbers are fruit of more than a decade of watching, though mainly 2018-2020 and 2024-2025, but due to the fact that I'm usually in spaces where people with way higher numbers tend to congregate (e.g. MAL and AMQ), it's not that rare for me to have my numbers be lower than the people I'm talking too (Happens all the time here on AD). I used to be self-conscious about it in the past, not so much nowadays because, after a certain point, it stops mattering much.

What's you opinion on the matter? 100? 1000?

400+ is the tier that normie status disappears imo. The problem with 2000+ is a lot of sus faked lists not saying it is impossible.
Someone with 400-1000 seems a lot more genuine than 3000+ which is 99% fraud tier.

To be honest I'm more lean to how much know your anime knowledge than numbers like you know how to recommend a good and underated anime from 70s to present if that person answer it then I personally say that guy have watched a lot of anime.

(This based in experience sometimes numbers are lying)

Just to clarify...
This is a Thread about another Thread that you made, where you told the story of beeing kicked out of some room, online, some time ago 😅

Today you're telling us that you ragequit that room, that nobody gave a fk about, but you. You even gave us screenshots and background info on the event that has NO VALUE to anyone and is of no interest, whatsoever.

Damn^^ how you avoid beeing closed for personal storytelling, everytime, is kinda amazing, at this point.
Adding the poll was clever. You're a good, little narcissist, aren't you? :)

Oh, here's the anwer to the alibi question you asked, so this still counts as a "discussion"

-> I think 100+ is pretty much Anime, for the average Normal guy, on the street.
On here? It might be more like 300+ , imo

If we're going by MAL stats then it kinda depends, like I have nearly 500 completed titles but a lot of those are specials or shorts or something around that length. I guess I'd consider (again, going by MAL stats) anything over 100 days a lot, that's a nice clean number and it's a good chunk of your life wasted watching anime.

I'd say 100 unique titles. Filling your list with 40 Doraemon movies is meaningless.

1000 or more than 1000 anime should’ve been enough to trigger my inner self to say, 'Yeah, I’ve watched a lot of anime'. Yet somehow, that brilliant realization never hit me until I saw this thread 😅

You might aswell get the award for the most annoying and aggresive user on MAL by this point.

Why so much unwarranted hostility? Why behave so toxically with pretty much everyone you met on these forums? And I'm not speaking only about this thread, everywhere you go you act the same to everyone. Did anyone piss on your cereal or something? Why are you so mad with everyone? Lol.

The inner workings of the minds of some people surely are an enigma to decipher...

It's only hostile if you think speaking up about people making the Forums all about themselfes is alright.
Which it isn't, for me.

I've only seen 410. But I've completed 291 manga.

And I'm reading 500 +.

And among those 500 are manga I'm further on in the source material than you guys are for anime. You have 2 completed for Vinland Saga? That's still on my non-completed list. Same with Blue Box and Sakamoto Days.

And there's stuff like Attack On Titan that counts as a single finish for me. But like 8 for anime fans.

For a normal person who doesn't have it as their be-all, end-all hobby, 50 is more than a lot.
By Mal standards, you're probably needing to times that by ten.

I think it depends. In RL I would say 100 anime is much, but on anime websites like MAL I would say 1000+ is an amazing milestone. Bonus points if you got 1000+ different franchises.

It's the days spent on anime which are important, not the number of shows.

A lot of you are using this site as a standpoint and skewing your perspective 100+ is a lot and is way more than 95+% of people will ever watch in their lives. A lot of people on this site have already watched a ton that's why they're on the site but compared to a normal watcher yea 100+ is a lot.

Also would it really count if 80% of all the anime you watch come from the same franchise (example: Dragon Ball)

Before Kiss Anime de-activated I had a bookmark watchlist of around 500 shows?
Across the years as a casual viewer to me that's a lot, so when I see people around here with numbers in the thousands, I can only be amazed.

Prolly around 300. Depends more on what you've watched. The amount of different stuff and time. I'm pretty sure I qualify for most people 'a lot' as I have 770 completed rn. And don't get me started on my manga, that's even more

Around 300-400 would be a lot, I know a lot of casual viewers that watch anime once a year and still have 100-150 titles completed on their accounts from "batches" completed years ago. Also days matter more anyway - anything close to 50-100 days is a crazy number. [I won't even mention my 316 days]

To me,everyone who makes it past 600+is considered to have watched a lot of shows, doesn't matter if you've watched 600 12 episode shows or 100 episode shows it's still not an easy task to complete because most of anime fans maybe wouldn't even break a sweat to get to 100-150 shows but as time goes by many fans stop watching anime because they grow tired of it and find some other hobby or they don't have as much tine to watch anime
So getting to 600+means you had to be a somewhat consistent fan for years to even get to that number

Thinking about it, I guess you shouldn't use an absolute, but a relative number.
Six hundred anime in sixty years is not that much. Only ten anime per year.

I'd say you watch a whole lot of anime if you watch 200 or more per year.

Once you are past 400 titles you'd definitely be somewhat knowledgeable.

Did you really feel the need to write an entire diary entry, which is a sequel to another, barely disguised as a MAL thread?

But let me humour your question. I agree with other takes that the number of MAL entries does not say much. Going by number of days spend on watching/reading is better, however this number could be somewhat inflated by re-watches like mine (though mine is not even that high in the first place) or long anime like One Piece. I think going by number of franchises is probably the best course of action.

I think 200-300 franchises could be considered a lot on MAL. Outside of MAL 50 already are a lot.

It's not really about quantity. Someone who watched 200 carefully selected and researched titles from all genres and across the whole anime history, while analyzing and discussing all of them, would be overall more experienced and knowledgeable on the topic that someone who mindlessly consumed 500 new seasonals and popular battle shounen.
Also, number and lenght of episodes vary greatly between series. Modern anime watchers will finish more anime faster than oldschool watchers, as nowadays the average number of eps per season is 12, while for pre-2000 anime 24-50 was the base. You could even get +200 completed in a single evening by watching shorts.

The thing is I'd argue episode count/length is a very big factor as well. If you just watch a bunch of short OVAs or anime music videos, you can artificially inflate your list numbers to crazy degrees.

This is why I don't typically add music videos and short 3 minute OVAs to my list unless it's a really beautifully animated thing or just a thing that I really want to score. It feels cheap to add them and I also don't want to clutter up my list with that stuff.

They're so short and I wouldn't really count them as an anime in thenselves.

It's a different story if it's something like Alien Stage though which is multiple connected music videos that make up a bigger story or a series of many short episodes.

Like I'd argue I've watched a lot of anime personally though even though I have less than 200 titles on my list. My episode count is in the thousands and a lot of those titles are movies too.

While I do think having watched 50-100 titles is already a lot, I would say there's something to be said about the range of what one watches too, Not to mention the length of the anime in question.

Long story short, I would argue that someone who has seen even just 30 titles across a range of genres, decades, etc is more a person who has "watched a lot of anime" than someone else who's seen 100 of the same kinda schtick. So like, someone who's had their share of isekai vs someone who's had their share of ANIME.

I have 163 completed over nine years, and I still consider myself a casual, but not a normie. Once I get through my plan to watch/on hold stuff, I'll be at around 400, and I'll start thinking I'm a bit more serious. Although, I do think days and episodes are more important- completing one franchise isn't impressive until it's One Piece or Sazae-san. Genres are also important- 100 normie shonen of the week is less of an overall experience than one of everything- that's the reason I feel like I have nine actual years of experience instead of 75 days. Although I'm low enough that I do feel self-conscious about numbers.

500+ should be the goal if you actually like/make time/are dedicated to the hobby. It's easy to watch/read reviews and have 300-400 series to watch (guilty!). It's catching up that takes time. I can say "oh I like (anime) it's obscure hidden gem that is very good"... but then I've only read reviews and haven't even started it yet. That's where you gotta get your popcorn and sit down for a few hours. It's even easier in the age of 12 episode cours- it only takes 4-5 hours to finish something.

I'm not sure about that. I spend much more time on video-games and visual novels, but if I spent it on watching anime instead, I'd probably have watched at least 5 times more than what I have now. That is to say, I can easily imagine someone who has 3000+ titles and 1000+ days.

I have 400+, but my list isn’t exactly accurate as I didnt add everything and don’t really care. If i for instance actually added all the series Ive dropped my total entries and episodes watched would be more than double what it is. Theres a lot of shows ive watched 80% of and just wasnt entertained enough to finish. I feel ive seen a lot of anime. A lot of people imo greatly exaggerate or straight up lie with their entries. Not saying its impossible, but theres people on here much younger than me with 2000+ anime and it just doesnt seem realistic even for a shut in.

It would be kind of sad if its some obsession and you’re watching anime at 1.5x-2x speed just so you can say you watched something, but im sure theres people like that. I only watch anime Im actually enjoying at this point, ive seen enough of all the genres and slop.

It pretty much depends on the context. I suppose I mostly think in these categories*:
10 ... at least came into contact with anime
25 ... has "actually" watched some anime
50 ... decent amount for someone who has recently came into contact with anime ... will probably continue to watch anime
100 ... has anime as an established hobby
200 ... is definitely an anime fan
500 ... is a true veteran (or someone with too much tolerance for binge-watching mediocre entertainment) [or the fast growing larva of the next category]
1000 ... this person is "special" in some way. Maybe in a good way ... maybe in a bad way ... probably some chaotic thing in between.
2000 ... this is suspicious, are you using time/episode skips and x2 speed? Or are you just mentally unstable?

(*There are people who watch either long-runners or films; but these numbers are based on MAL entries if you happen to mostly watch 12-36 episode seasons and some specials/movies. Also: Those exclusive binge watchers of mediocre entertainment may be special cases and and have to be analysed individually.)
=====
Oh ... and for the most part I have no idea what this background story is supposed to tell me. But I suppose the answer you asked for is 500 or 1000.

100 different series is definitely a lot. I would even say like 60-70, especially when there a few long runners such as One Piece, Naruto or Dragon Ball among them.

One Piece episode 914 & 915 & 1027 were a mistake and 957 brought the salvation - FMmatron
