Kawaguchi is back in Jump again. Art was amazing. Overall I thought it was a good start. Red Hood was a total mess. Let's see if this one works out or not.

I haven't seen the authors previous work Red Hood but this first chapter of this new series was decent. I liked the art.

The art was great, but the chapter itself felt pretty mid. It also makes me a bit scared, since it reminds me of Ice Head Gill, which... we all know that Jump could beat him when it came to axes.

EXTREMELY STRONG FIRST CHAPTER! Incredible art, action, and build-up has me super hype to see what the warrior/cook OTR has in store in his own 'saga'. Also surprisingly grotesque, surprised it wasn't put into J+! Regardless, I loved it and all of the detailed spreads went hard. It's like Fire Punch, Kagurabachi, and Ichi the Witch had a baby. Loving the artstyle and character designs too, really looking forward tot the next chapter

It started off slow. A few panels didn't pop off but the overwhelmingly amazing art in rest of the panels, especially the double page spreads outshined it all. A slow start that paid off really well at the end. I really hope the cooking x warrior gimmick is utilized well.
Art: 10/10
Story presented in first chapter: 7/10
Direction and storyboarding: 6/10
Overall, it was a 8/10 chapter. I really enjoyed the art and the story seems promising. There's so much that can be made out of this story in the following chapters.

I hope this does well. The art is great, since it's Kawaguchi-sensei after all, and the concept is interesting as well. I never thought I would say this, but Shonen Jump needs another good action series. Hopefully this will be it.

I also like how we're already seeing some themes about self-sacrifice, love, and giving to others. Making others warm, cooking for others, fighting for others, and dying for others. The first chapter presents a balanced view of self-sacrifice: care for others, but also for yourself so you can care for others more.

The characters are nice as well. Otr is a pretty likeable kid. Fylgja is such a fun character already too: she's so goofy. What more does one need in a shōnen manga?

I say let it cook. Definitely at least an 8/10 chapter for me.

The first color page seems to be referencing the events later in the chapter, specifically the line about how "The spirit warmed the warrior's freezing fingers and provided power." This would fit with how later in the chapter Otr's sister told him, "Next time, I want you to tell me your own Saga." So the first page might be a summary of Otr's story with the following lines possibly referring to future events: "Thus the evil king fell, the warrior became a hero..." "...and, having fulfilled its duty..." "the spirit melted back into nature."
This seems to be alluding to Fylgja disappearing at the end, after helping Otr become a hero by defeating the leader of the Ice Kingdom, she also referred to Otr as a warrior. The color page showing green foliage might be depicting the world returning to normal after the Ice Kindom's defeat. There is also the different colored warriors shown with various weapons a sword, axe, spear, bow and halberd. The red one with the sword and shield seems to be Otr. The page of Otr one shotting the villain of the chapter is framed like a tapestry, almost as if it's showing some scene out of a famous legend. Red Hood also had similar ideas of the world and events of that series all being apart of a storybook, which some characters had control over which lead to its meta ending.

Another theme that seems to be underlining this chapter is life and death. The magic system used by the MC appears to be fueled by Breath and breathing is something only living things can do. Alajoki also mentioned that "Breath is part of the soul." and that it has magical significance according to a shaman. The enemies are undead Draugr as well as the Ice Kingdom, Norse societies often associated the cold with death. In Norse mythology, Hel the realm of the dead (for people who don't die in battle) is described as a place of cold, ice and darkness. The Hrimthurs/Frost Giants are antagonistic forces in Norse mythology and seem to be named that because of the negative association the cold has. Fimbulwinter is three years of winter without summer, this is said to be the prelude to Ragnarok, the end of the world and death of most of the beings in Norse mythology.
The Norse associating the cold with death makes sense considering the cold and harsh environment they lived in, making something like farming quite difficult. Which in contrast shows why fire a tool against the cold is sometimes associated with life. It's the fires from Muspelheim melting the ice in Ginnungagap that created Ymir, the first living being in Norse Mythology.

The cold setting in this manga is also neat since breathing in cold weather makes your breath visible, which could accentuate it and make it appear more magical. If this series survives and gets an anime, seeing the visible breath coming out of the living beings versus its absence in the undead would make for some neat visuals.

Fylgja implied the reason she chooses Otr was because he had a desire to live, in comparison to the soldiers that seemed gleefully enthusiastic about dying a warrior's death and journeying to Valhalla. There's also the Sagas, that seem to glorify heroes dying, Otr and his sister quoted these lines pertaining to the Sagas "through self-sacrifice, Ynga felled the great sea serpent" and "through death, the tales of warriors are passed down through Sagas." It's his sister saying the stories where the warriors lived and went on adventures that were the more "epic and entertaining ones" that compelled Otr to live, and I guess that's the thing that will set Otr's Saga apart from others going forward, a story about how he lived instead of died. Otr breathed life into the flame that became Fylgja and the Ice Sorcerer used the dead warriors as his pawns to fight their former allies, making his powers the perfect counter against this death seeking culture.

Hmmm, I must say the ease with which he defeated the enemies felt somewhat implausible even within the context.
Besides, it was a funny reading, I want to follow the series.

I was a fan of Red Hood so I was very excited when I heard about this series. I like the first chapter of Red Hood more but this was a good start to the series. Otr isn't much to write about as an MC he checks the Shonen boxes and doesn't do anything special here. The art is where the series really shined tho. It was amazing with a few truly epic panels. I'm happy and satisfied with this first chapter in here for tge long haul.

The art is amazing like many people say, even though it's not really my style, the rest is just okay at best. and another issue with this author that I found, similar to Red Hood, is that their storytelling is bland and lacks uniqueness, making the reading experience not very exciting despite having an impactful moment, interesting settings and ideas. and I can't take the villains seriously at all. They're just meh.

However, this is a huge improvement from that horrendous Red Hood and I hope this works this time.

Really excited for this because Red Hood had a lot of good things about it even though it was disorganized. Hopefully this won't try to go in a all the world's a book direction which should keep things more grounded. Kind of lol that his fylgja's name is Fylgja though.

yeah it’s cool. The art kinda reminds me of endgame Saint Seiya, which is a compliment. They kinda lost me when the fire spirit thing turned into some fairy girl, but it’s whatever. As for the story, very tragic. The action has the potential to be stellar. I have never read Red Hood but this looks promising so far, so hopefully it gets some better treatment. Not hooked quite yet but still.

Am I missing something, or is this just another case of people wanting to be on the bandwagon?

The Nordic design style again? This is the fifth, I think, title in recent years that has done this. All of the previous titles were axed, mind you. Is this an editor's obsession or what? This also just reads like an amalgamation of all those titles.

The first chapter felt a bit rushed as well, with poor world-building and lack of central themes or defined goals for the MC.

Maybe I'm wrong, and this will hit with Japanese audiences like Red Hood didn't, but I wouldn't hold my breath.
