Hi there!
I write as a member of a student group in the field of media studies, who want to research the experience that users have in using MyAnimeList. We are from Denmark and connected to the University of Southen Denmark - but anyone who want to share their experience are more than welcome.
We are not ourselves that most avid users of MAL (hence why we want to research the site), so feel free to leave a comment or reach out in other ways if you want to participate, and we will be happy to fill you in on the process and further purpose of the research.

Kind regards
Jonathan and Mads

There have been quite some people in the past claiming to do research before and none of those could or were willing to link to some official page of some entry indicating there would be actually some legitimate market research going on, so I'm not gonna believe some random potential throw-away account who had been lying sleeping and where the first posting is to straight out ask us about our experiences on this site just like that

Did I ever tell you of the tale of Darth Plageius the C*ck and Ball torturer? It's not a story the MALites would tell you.

I believe the staff of MAL have different words for this.

@Noboru I am more than willing to try and make myself more believable, so what could that be? Furthermore it's not market research, it's for an exam. And what makes you think that this is a throw-away account?

@Zarutaku Cool! Would you care to be interviewed online, i.e. on a discord call?

I have experienced things, yes. Lots of experiences. Some experiences that make you regret having experiences and others that make you want to have more experiences. Do you like experiencing experiences?

@Massu-San It doesn't read anything about "exam" in the title. When people conduct official research, there is usually a project page somewhere on the website of the university or something. This is missing here. Everyone could claim they're doing some research or would need it for some exam, but who knows if they're actually doing that or are just trying to grab user data because their shady company told them so or worse: aren't actually a human being, but a newer type of bot with advanced A.I. that can react to user postings and includes links to potential fraudulent websites in edited responses

Let me guess: join date in the recent years, no other forum postings, first thread and all postings all about a specific topic. I wonder what else did I miss 🤔

The general forums are just the surface of MAL with plain interactions.
Explore the older MAL clubs (clubs established and active around 2010 to 2020) to really get the feel real fun in MAL used to be, see the club comments, admin chats, etc..

@Noboru I'm actually dumbfounded. How on edge are you? Yes, I didn't mention the exam, I thought that was evident from the "student group" and I'd love to check in with my teachers at uni, to see if there's any official link I can provide. But yes my account is only a few years old, as I only learned about this site then. And no, I haven't done any posts, as I'm not schooled in these aspects of the site, a part from rating - you can see I have plenty of entries, a few friends and comments on their profiles.

But honestly scary that you think I'm a bot.

Where do I start? There was the Nazi epidemic of 2016/17 which led to CD's Rule 7, that time the site was down for months and the many terrible things I've seen when I was a mod (the worst of which were an unsolicited dick pic that had been sent to a minor and a clique of users that tried to push a then-prominent forum poster to kill herself).
Take care of yourself

@LoveLikeBlood Oh, damm. I don't quite know how to respond to that, but thanks for sharing.
