When you first started filling out your plan to watch list, what did it look like? (IE: What was on it, where were you trying to find shows, etc)

It doesn't have to be your Mal list, if you started elsewhere like doing it on another site or on a word doc, that's ok

My early list was mostly just watchmojo recommendations (they did this list about perverted anime and i watched those)

Mal Recommendations of my favorite anime at the time, which was Please Teacher

TV Tropes pages about genre's

And finally...Dragon Ball. My childhood anime i never finished so i decided to make it the last anime i'd watch...but i never completed my list because it kept growing.
My waifu is the most wonderful waifu. Mai Valentine.

We're freaking out that we're running out of time, but to do what? Should i stop and think of that? Is there something i could do to slow it down? Live in a day for once, instead of watch it sprinting by

It was basically everything on crunchyroll and funimation that I had heard of but hadn't seen. It was about 70 titles, enough to increase my completed list to 200 if I had watched them all. I dropped enough of them, however, that it took only a few months to get through the whole list.

It was basically just all the sequels/prequels/spin offs to everything that had them in the beginning.

My first ever Plan to Watch list was on Anime News Network's "My Anime," which was the first "anime list" feature to exist. I think it launched in 2002 or 2003, and I was so excited about it that I started my list on that first day. I was keeping track in a word document before that, and I would occasionally take note of a title that I wanted to keep in mind for later, but that was it. I didn't have a proper Plan to Watch list before My Anime launched.

This was a long time ago, so the number of anime that existed was really small compared to what we have now, and the number that was actually subtitled and realistically available to watch was even smaller than that. So considering this, I actually just went though the entire encyclopedia from A-Z. I opened every single title, and if an anime looked like something I might enjoy, and also something I might actually be able to find somewhere to watch, I added it to my Plan to Watch list.

I feel like this would be almost impossible to do today, with thousands upon thousands of anime in existence, and the majority of them subtitled and easily found, but back then, it didn't take me too long to go through the whole list little by little.

600 Plan to Watch

Shows that were recommended to me
Add all existing entries to that franchise
Multiple various goals: 90% completion of top 250 popular and rated, completing entire franchises with minimum of three per letter off alphabet, completing entire franchises based on the season's first entry that's TV length and must be unique (each season of that year based on the year would determine how much I need to complete to get that goal), MALGRAPH achievements, and more
Any pictures, videos, clips, etc of moments I came upon reading forums or topics that I find amusing
All shows I know I didn't complete will have to rewatch from the start

It looked like an empty list that I started to fill.

I first watched my first 3 anime - Fairy Tail, Kuroshitsuji and Tokyo Ghoul and then my watchlist started.

Few reccomendations from friends, then I watched a lot of MEPs and AMVs with anime hot guys so I just took anime from there [like Haikyuu, Magi, KNB and more] and I watched them, then after I had a large backlog I stopped even watching the AMVs, I just took anime in them from the discription like a blind-bag.

I watched few anitubers at the time, because I didn't want spoilers I just put anime they talked about in my plan to watch. [my reasoning being - if something is worth making a video about, I may as well watch it] [and I'm not picky at all so XD]

Later I kinda stopped both watching anitubers and AMVs/MEPs and I watched seasonals for few years, I knew my taste perfectly already, so I mostly added random shows I saw on the web and classics/anime engrained in pop-culture.

Right now, few months ago I went throught the entire seasonals from 1960-2024 and my list is done. [well I add random ova's there or show's but It's mostly done]

It sits at 806 titles right now - if someone is interested, It's in my links, as I use Polish for it. [too lazy for now, to add everything here.]

I don't think I really had a PTW list before I started using MAL, so when I started using this website frequently a couple years ago I found cool stuff through MAL itself. I think I mostly found new anime through interest stacks for a while, and I just added whatever had an interesting cover or synopsis. I'd also look through other people's lists and do the same thing, adding whatever I thought seemed interesting from there.

Mine probably started with stuff a friend of mine recommended and shit I saw randomly on Kissanime. Just see something click on it and make a note to watch it later. Nowadays I do the same but with MAL and sometimes I find stuff in other peoples profiles
