I'm not trying to say those opinions or concerns are invalid. What I'm trying to say is, just because a parent company explores using those technologies, doesn't mean those technologies are suddenly going to end up on MAL.

What a completely hand-wavy response to the fact that companies like this are a plague on creative communities and social networks. The bag must have been big, can't say I blame whoever made this decision. But yeah I'd rather use anything else now.

Yeah...... I am gonna have to look for a new website. This website will be dead in 5 - 10 years

You have an embarrassingly low amount of manga mods and only 4-5 do their job properly. You have zero excuses why most of the entries take YEARS to be accepted(excluding the super popular ones... hmmm I wonder why) in 2025 for such a huge website with thousand of submissions waiting to be accepted. And most of the edits for so many mistakes mainly made by the mods are either never accepted or take weeks or months to be accepted.

Here is one of many personal examples of me waiting for a bloody light novel to be accept since the damn 2022 :
https://myanimelist.net/forum/?goto=post&topicid=60876&id=71448620

And this is just one of my personal example that I have submitted when at the same time this light novel already exist in your competitors that are light years smaller wbsite than you.

The #1 improvement I want to see? A separation of episode updates and visual updates in the feed filter. I want to know when a new episode drops, but I COULD NOT CARE LESS about a new image being added to the database. Let me filter out the latter without losing the former.

(As much as I'm side-eyeing an AI company having full ownership of MAL, I'll wait until they screw something up before I complain.)

Faust also thought that his life was going to improve.

The OP only feels like a giant fumi-e and the peak of the solar activity will never come soon enough.

Prepare yourself for AI moderation and aggressive pop-ups urging you to buy Naruto NFTs whenever you update your list. Not to mention that your forum posts (and your reviews, your synopses, etc) will all be used to train AI. MAL is not a profitable company, so aggressive commercial practices are bound to happen. I just hope that the forum will not become completely unusable, but looking at all the recent downgrades, the future looks bleak. MAL did not have to turn into a Reddit -2.0 that incorporates all the worst ideas of our time and most people just want to update their lists and maybe write a forum post once in a while, they do not want to buy manga and NFTs here. The only glimmer of hope is that when a massive exodus of members takes place, Gaudiy might realise that MAL cannot be turned into something profitable, and it may sell the website to a more ethical company (I know that this is an oxymoron).

This will happen as soon as we detect pyramid scams implemented in here. The majority of the users here don;t like NFT web3 crap etc.

This is definitely my #1 most wanted improvement:

The ability to score entries with decimal values, such as 4.5, 8.5, 2.5, etc. It would allow for more nuanced and accurate ratings, especially for users who feel that a title falls between two whole-number scores. Sometimes a 7 feels too low and an 8 too generous, so a 7.5 would solve that. Other platforms like AniList already offer this, and it enhances both personal tracking and broader score statistics.

That said, another feature I’d love to see is a score history tracker for each anime/manga’s mean score over time. Ideally, something visual like a graph or timeline. It would give insight into how community perception has evolved since a title’s release. For example, it would be nice to see if a show gained appreciation slowly through word-of-mouth, or dropped in score after an underwhelming ending. It would also help identify seasonal trends or how hype and controversy affect scores.
Yes, I know there are third-party tools, MAL Clubs, and fan-made graphs floating around, but having something official and directly visible on a show's page would make analysis more accessible, reliable, and interesting for everyone

Undoing many of the 2022-onwards changes would be an improvement regarding reviews specifically, as navigation became far more tedious (being able to sort by positive/negative category is fine tho). The way reviews are sorted/displayed on a work's homepage is random and arbitrary, the emoji system was a terrible and blatantly exploited idea that remains ridiculous to this day. The fact that toggleable review options like preliminary and most voted STILL don't stick after years of these changes when they used to prior is ridiculous. Even with the more recent 2023 changes, what this site has done to reviews has been a serious net negative and is why so many people just straight-up quit and focused more on AniList.

The idea that this website may push for NFTs and AI-generated slop to be added in is a notable concern. If they are implemented, that will rightfully be a significant blow to the website resulting in an exodus of its userbase in protest, myself included. We should not have a new UI or anything, we should NEVER sell user-preferance data to an AI company of all things, and we should NEVER allow AI-generated anime on this database (aside from unfortunate official titles using Gen-AI like The Boy and the Dog or whatever it was called).

This is a genuine outrage, possibly even worse than the review overhaul changes this website made back in 2022!

I doubt they will promote NFT that even major companies are starting to abandon. You want to know will surely happen? We are gonna see a massive bombardment of bots posting phishing and trojan scam links downloading .exe files for crypto miner programs and web3 on every possible forum post and if you think about that this website of this size still has under 10 people(forum mods) moderating it, you can imagine what will happen.

@Yubisoft Some sources I've seen on the back-end suggest there are talks of this being a possibility, and that the upcoming UI is fucking dogshit. I won't elaborate too much here, but even beyond what the official announcement stated, there's reasons to be concerned.

I guess the #1 improvement would be to make it clear and transparent to users what Gaudy intends to do with AI and blockchain before making any major decisions. The community should be more consulted on what they deem acceptable or not. I think any major changes involving AI should be accepted by at least two-thirds of the fan-base, especially if it touches the database. On practice, that might require making a new web page where anyone can vote on those decisions. However, considering the bot plague we're facing spamming weird scores and new accounts selling scam, enhancing security against bots might have to come first.

Add more titles from East Asian neghbours of Japan including the R-18 stuff. A lot of stuff in this platform have so much room for improvement that it's unfair to make us just choose one. However, I'm pretty confident that there are people out there who share my qualms about the features and everything especially in regards to the interface. But yeah, add more titles in your library/database.

yummy lunch meat !!!!

I think an overall UI overhaul, especially on the mobile site, would breathe new life into the website and attract new users as well as help to retain current users.
@kakyoin this is a great way to destroy the site. So many companies fail to realize this. They change UI and watch all the old users leave and fail to get new users. A UI overhaul would be the biggest mistake. I'm surprised someone who joined in 2009 would even suggest that lmao

Literally just keep the site as it is. I don't need any big changes. Just keep everything working and I will be happy. I just need my lists. That's all. It's really that simple. I even think Novels are fine because they clearly say "light novel" when you go to the page itself.

As for the topic of AI and such.... it sucks. But we also feared the site would fall apart back when DeNA bought it but the site didn't turn into a mobile-first disaster. Just keep your lists backed up in case the worse comes to pass. See what happens for now.

They're probably going to sell our user data to some AI startup. If they redesign the UI, it'd be terrible anilist type shit I'd imagine. I expect Cory in the House type bullshit in the DB. I expect another attempt to purge the site of ecchi and sexual content to try to pull advertisers. They will undoubtedly try to sell NFTs in the year of the lord our god 2025, despite that being long dead.

This is going to wind up causing a mass exodus if they do any of the stuff they probably are pushing for doing. Techbros don't care and only bring death and misery to every human-ran community they touch.

My suggestion is for Shirakawa or whatever the fuck his name is to sell the site before he causes himself a giant loss on investment, since I predict the more these changes actually roll out the more his little data livestock will find homes elsewhere, and he'll end up without much product to push.

Kineta said:
With that in mind: What's the #1 improvement you want to see? (You can only pick 1!)

There are a lot of things that come to mind in regards to things I'd like to see improved, but I guess my number one item would be an improved submission system. Changing existing anime and manga entries is currently such a drag, half the data can't be changed on the page, there is no way to give a source unless you write in the forum and there is absolutely no feedback on submissions. I never know if my submissions get approved, denied or just straight up ignored. Changing the synopsis is basically impossible because you can't edit the existing text, you have to copy it and then make the change. And good luck if it's using BBCode, because that will be rendered and you won't have access to the source code. Just give us a decent editor for everything that should be changeable and give us an additional field for sources that mods can see when approving a submission. That should substantially cut down on edits because they won't have to spend so much time to confirm a submission. [small]Though a few more mods would also appreciated, others have mentioned it already but there is a lot of stuff that's just sitting and waiting, often for years.[/small] And then all we'd need is a nice overview of the submissions a user has done to the database. At this point this data could also be used to approach users who frequently do positive contributions and recruit them for the mod team. That way there are even more competent hands and submissions could be done even fast.

So if I had to pick one thing, that would be it. Also honorable mention for an improved API; you don't like it, I don't like it, but if you don't give me the option, I will have to continue to use scraping bots to get the data I want. I can't believe it's impossible to access only the first ten recommendations and not all of them.

Personally, I’d like it if MAL added manga that have no translations yet. Although the reason that probably hasn’t happened in the last 20+ years of MAL’s existence is because there are a LOT of manga that fit this category.

I think MAL should have some sort of AI that quizzes you or helps you find users similar to you based on your list

Although, I don’t really want AI or NFT’s on this site, if it’s going to happen anyway, then I would want to have my very meaningless say in this.

Main features I'd want would be filter/search tools by country of origin (i.e. Japan vs Korea vs China).

But there's also always smaller things, like how you can't collapse "TV Returning" in seasonal charts while the ONA and Special sections don't filter for new vs returning at all, so they're constantly filled with seasons-old still-airing donghua.

Filter by "entry point" is always kind of a pipe-dream for me too, make it easier to sort through all the sequels or tie-in Specials and such. Would also let people know "Hey this thing that sounds like a spin-off, is it a spin-off or do you need to have watched the other stuff first to get any of it?" though labelling series in that way would probably require a lot of work and have a LOT of contentious decisions on whether or not you can start a series with such-and-such.

and as most are saying yeah no, I hope the company is VERY hands-off, I do not want no Web 3.0 bullshit clogging my database resource, that shit sucks

That MAL wants to use AI, being a forum and database, sounds like all those shit ideas that pretend that everything can be solved with AI. As happened at the time with Blockchain.

>Power your search with AI
>Power your work with AI
>Power your email with AI
>Now power your animanga with AI

And knowing the nature of this staff, are they going to use it for much more restricted moderation? Especially when it comes to 18+ content or for expressing something without considering the context? I'm sure sooner or later (especially the NFT shit) some of this stuff is going to get reverted.

Using technology in a way that goes against that goal, or doing anything that would upset or disappoint fans, is not what we—or the Gaudiy team—ever intend.

The only way they can be true to this statement is literally to not do anything at all lol. If they remove loli/shota then this isn't "anime" list, it's a censored data farm. Even if that content isn't great, it still exists and should be listed.

Not sure what to think of it.

They have some rather big names among their partners (https://site.gaudiy.com/en/product), who hopefully have an interest to keep the existing users/livestock, and hopefully prevent too fancy innovations/escapades.
