New Owners & Investment Today, Gaudiy Inc. has announced that the previous shareholders of MyAnimeList have transferred their shares, making Gaudiy the sole owner of MAL. At the same time, Gaudiy has announced a third-party allotment of its shares, raising 10 billion JPY from Sony Group Corporation and Bandai Namco Holdings Inc. Who is Gaudiy? Gaudiy is a company with a vision of connecting fans to IP. With Gaudiy Fanlink, they explore using various new technologies such as AI and blockchain to bring new experiences to fans. Did you say AI/blockchain?!?! Technology is a tool. Tools can be used for good (mmm yummy lunchmeat) or bad (oh no not my arm!) ...Okay, that analogy is a bit morbid and we're still 5 months away from Halloween. I understand that much of the community feels one or more of the following: NFTs are scams, generative AI is killing artists' livelihoods, blockchain is killing the planet, web3 is a pipe dream! I'm not trying to say those opinions or concerns are invalid. What I'm trying to say is, just because a parent company explores using those technologies, doesn't mean those technologies are suddenly going to end up on MAL. Gaudiy's CEO, Mr. Ishikawa, has said it directly to me himself (shared with his permission): As you understand, what we're aiming to build is a space where fans can come together and enjoy content with one another. Using technology in a way that goes against that goal, or doing anything that would upset or disappoint fans, is not what we—or the Gaudiy team—ever intend. So then what happens to MAL now? Gaudiy is the fourth company to acquire MAL. What makes this acquisition unique is that we will not be losing the experience and knowledge gained previously. Hopefully, this means we should be able to escape some of the growing pains we've had to go through in past acquisitions. Very active MAL members may have noticed that our technical development slowed considerably over the last year. Many new features that were added in the last 2-4 years are still incomplete, and which we and many members still hope to see expanded (e.g. profile stats, interest stacks, fantasy anime league, our app, better mobile support, etc. etc.) With new owners and new investment, we hope to be able to get back to improving various features and your user experience. This is still the beginning of a new chapter in MAL's history, so it's too early to say definitively what will be tackled first. Still, I hope we can look forward together with cautious optimism. With that in mind: What's the #1 improvement you want to see? (You can only pick 1!) Update: May 8, 2025 It's come to my attention that an image containing false information has been circulating around communities recently. Whomever shared this image has claimed it comes from "a trusted source who is a MAL mod." I'm not sure why someone would write such blatant lies, and sincerely hope that this is a bad joke gone wrong. I would like to firmly state that all of the information in this image comes from this person's imagination. There is not an element of truth in it. This new acquisition is still in the beginning steps, which means there is not much information to share yet. All the information I have now, has been shared in this forum post. While it may be more fun to believe juicy "fake insider information," I hope that this community can take me at my word. |

What's the #1 improvement you want to see? Add more series and movies to bring in users leaving for other sites When asked why people leave MyAnimeList to use other sites/aps, the main reason I've gotten is its because the competition has entries unavailable here. So for one if there is a big backlog of legitimate anime and manga waiting to be added, as users have complained about, they need to be added as soon as possible. And as per the same improvement, while I don't watch these, I would like to see MAL add all the highly requested anime-ish animations that aren't actually anime by MAL standards: for example Devil May Cry 2025, Scott Pilgrim, or Castlevania.. how many threads do we see every week for them? https://myanimelist.net/forum/?subboard=2 Important: if these animeish series were added to MAL, their page should straight up say near the title that it's not anime somehow, for example, something like South Korean Netflix animation for DMC 2025 and a true anime like the amazing Angel Cop gets the label Japanese Anime OVA next to its title. People have said adding these not-anime-by-MAL-standards series would lead to a slippery slope where Inspector Gadget and My Little Pony will be on the site, but this is silly: if you have human admins you reject those obvious ones and go on a case-by-case basis making special allowances for the constantly requested animeish series which new users always expect here. I would prefer a third list for such series to keep them from the real entries, but that might be asking too much lol. And we have a lot of weird (I'm assuming) Chinese animation in the database https://myanimelist.net/anime/45056/Chihuo_Yuzhou/pics so if this can be added, why not let Castlevania be on some MAL user's anime lists too This way, the community can finally list these series, we properly learn about them from their page, and ppl can stop complaining about it lol. More important to my suggestion, users will have less reason to go to other sites. Myanimelist making allowances for the animeish series often mistaken as anime. With the database pages you can make a clear statement about what is true anime or not and put these issues to rest- let MAL be the authority and only place you'd need to go! This should also bring MAL up in the Google searches when ppl look for these popular series. On topic, I like this suggestion by Pidgeon-san too https://myanimelist.net/forum/?goto=post&topicid=2213643&id=72718157 A warm welcome to the new owners Gaudiy! New development goes a very long way here when it's put in the right direction. Mobile definitely needs more with the expanding world market - I hope that's a top priority - and there's many QOL changes requested for years in Support and Suggestions, but they have never been added. And kudos to Kineta for leaving the comments open and asking for feedback (she's done a great job admining for years) please be cool guys :D |

Faust also thought that his life was going to improve. The OP only feels like a giant fumi-e and the peak of the solar activity will never come soon enough. Prepare yourself for AI moderation and aggressive pop-ups urging you to buy Naruto NFTs whenever you update your list. Not to mention that your forum posts (and your reviews, your synopses, etc) will all be used to train AI. MAL is not a profitable company, so aggressive commercial practices are bound to happen. I just hope that the forum will not become completely unusable, but looking at all the recent downgrades, the future looks bleak. MAL did not have to turn into a Reddit -2.0 that incorporates all the worst ideas of our time and most people just want to update their lists and maybe write a forum post once in a while, they do not want to buy manga and NFTs here. The only glimmer of hope is that when a massive exodus of members takes place, Gaudiy might realise that MAL cannot be turned into something profitable, and it may sell the website to a more ethical company (I know that this is an oxymoron). |

large number of moderators should be present who actively participate in the forums and remove or edit out posts/threads/reviews/comments which break rules. i see threads with spoiler in title being up for days with nothing done (but X vs Y threads are immediately locked like ???), i see reviews by users which is not a review but just a bunch of slurs in capital letters being copy-pasted dozens of times, i see unmarked spoilers in posts. i understand the community should follow the forum rules but many don't so because of the people who don't follow the rules why should the people who do follow the rules suffer? if i an user who is hardly active can spot all this then surely a moderator who's whole job is to correct things like that can find it too. and i don't think these issues are very frequent either. just checking even once a day should suffice. you might say you should report these types of things then and i do but in my recent past 5 reports i haven't been contacted if the content i reported was even taken care of. |

I do appreciate I noticed we now get anime and manga related ads which I find to be an improvement over the previous scam and clickbait ads I was seeing on anime and manga pages before. Improvement I'd like to see is MAL become more privacy friendly, as such become compliant to the most stringent data privacy laws. This would be a must not just for legal reasons but for liability reasons in case of data breech and also to protect users from authoritarian government actions. Below is just an extension of explaining what this entails but not all that this can entail. For example if you must gather analytics data at least switch from Google Analytics to something like Matomo. They allow import of data from Google so nothing would be lost switching. They also allow local hosting so this would be at no cost in that kind of setup otherwise they have a paid service. Local hosting also allows full ownership over the data which while we would rather prefer you did not but it can be sold by MAL instead of a third party selling it. If you set it up correctly it can do analytics without cookies this means MAL would possibly be one more step toward no longer need the cookie banner as required by some law which will be one less nuisance for users and improved site aesthetics, though I may have some misunderstanding on the requirements. MAL calls to several fonts hosted off site. This means other sites have information on users. If they for some reason do not want to change fonts, Google Fonts such as Roboto can be locally hosted and unless I am mistaken Font Awesome is used for some icons which also can be locally hosted I think. This should in theory speed up the site performance for some users because there would be less calls to other sources so the page should render quicker I think. Google ReCaptcha loads the font Roboto in the background unable to be changed in it's settings potentially tracking user activity. It sometimes does more to stop real users than it does to stop bots. Look into more privacy friendly options such as Procaptcha. Unless I am mistaken you also can combine it with something like Anubis to do proof of work to slow down bots that get through (and has a cute mascot). I also have some other suggestions that can be done along side this to stop bots if needed that I can't say in open. Unfortunately I lack personal experience so I am not 100% certain on how well performing some of these are but I did my research. Also some laws allow people to request partial data deletion. So instead of having users have to delete their entire account it would be needed to allow users to request their IP history be deleted, and delete old previously used emails addresses not currently used in their settings. Likewise if MAL does not already hash and salt user IP addresses it should do so like it should for other user data to be protected from intrusion. Advertisers also should not have access to a users site activities even if they click on an ad. The ads should only be served up based on the general interests of anime, manga, Japanese games and Japanese music and maybe page contents with exception to some of the general forum sections to help avoid some weird ads. If you go through sincere effort to maintain privacy of users then maybe less users would use ad blockers, click more ads, and/or more users would prefer MAL over some competitors just due to their own personal concerns of privacy being better met here. Some anime and manga fans tend to be on the more anxious or paranoid side or are potential targets for oppression by their governments. Of course the site security also needs reviewed. |

I am happy with what we have currently. Problem with this is just look how broken the site became when they added conversation view. It broke the forum because the previous devs didn't know how to do it without neutering basic functionality like quotes and really next to no one is even using that view anyway. You can always use a Stylish or Stylus theme for MAL to change appearances, what is better to focus on is functionality aspect of UI, technically that is UX too but these terms overlap. Though it is fine if you mean the mobile site and the mobile app since I don't think anyone is that attached to it that they would be that bothered by change. Also the current dark mode has bad colour choices where the contrast is too high. Maenads said: I might be an old fogey but I really appreciate the current UI for what it is. Since UI also means function. We all hate how we cant quote users like normal anymore after the dumb conversation view neutered the forums and no one likes the sometimes overly restrictive character count restriction to post especially since there is no display of current character count as you type so you wind up having to submit multiple times which is a bad user experience. |

This acquisition is very worrying, but I will continue contributing to the site in the ways that I can and I will stay hopeful, as that is really all that I can do. The improvement to MAL that I would like to see the most is separating novels into their own list, rankings, and database that are completely separate from the manga list, rankings, and database. Novels and manga are two separate mediums of art that should not be conflated. East Asian novel readership outside of the region seems to be continuously increasing, so there will be enough users to support an entirely separate rankings now. Also, many of the newly announced anime series are based on a light novel series that also has a manga adaptation publishing at the same time. Since the novel entry sometimes doesn't look very different from the manga entry in those cases, users often mistakenly rate the novel entry when they meant to rate the manga entry. Evidence of this can be seen in some novel entries that have a surprising amount of ratings despite not having an English translation yet. This issue would be mostly resolved by the separation of novels into their own database. |

It would be great to have some kind of calendar feature that shows currently watching/airing anime by release time and day of the week. It should also include time/date information for major official platforms outside of Japan as well (i.e. Crunchyroll, Hidive, Netflix, etc.) |

I'm not trying to say those opinions or concerns are invalid. What I'm trying to say is, just because a parent company explores using those technologies, doesn't mean those technologies are suddenly going to end up on MAL. What a completely hand-wavy response to the fact that companies like this are a plague on creative communities and social networks. The bag must have been big, can't say I blame whoever made this decision. But yeah I'd rather use anything else now. |

I've not been on the site for very long so I'm not sure I can really offer much in the way of suggestions. All I can really say is, it would be nice if the "My Anime/Manga Suggestions" tabs on the main page took the content on my lists more into account, I don't have know the fine details of how it's calculated, but based on what the little question mark says, it would appear to mainly be based on popularity on the database. |

I'd like to see improved interest stacks where you can add more than 50 items per stack. |

What's the #1 improvement you want to see? Better database maintenance and moderation. Thousands of entries (especially for manga) are pending for years, this is not normal. This is #1 thing that should be solved by MAL, everything else is secondary. |

Kineta said: With that in mind: What's the #1 improvement you want to see? (You can only pick 1!) Easy: Make Novels their own category. It's ridiculous that they are still combined with Manga in every part of the site. It can be confusing for new users to figure out whether an entry for (whatever) series is either the manga or light novel version. Needs to be it's own separate class in the database. Separate "Top Novel" section. Separate part of user profiles. When MAL started light novel anime wasn't even taking off yet. The only English translated version we'd get were fan translation. No publisher was licensing them yet. But fast forward 15+ years later and there are dozens of new light novels coming out in English every year. MAL doesn't even have most of them. AniList gets things added to the database so much faster despite being a smaller site. (Seriously, what the hell are the database mods here doing? Are there even more than like 3 active ones anymore? Why does it take years for things to be approved when AniList does it in days?) No other anime/manga tracking site has tried to list novels as a separate entity. They have all just copied MAL's format of lumping them all into the "Manga" category. MAL has the opportunity to do something different and pull away users from these other sites by separating the two categories. I can assure you are many of us out there that have frustrated for over 10 years at how we can't see separate read times, average scores, total series rate, separate favorites list, etc. for manga and novels. |
