In my case, the solution is pretty easy. I simply don't watch it because there's way too much anime every season and i don't nearly have enough time for it.

I watch it and don't focus on seasonals [that much - I'm still really behind XD]. Right now I'm on 850+ planned, but I'm good, it will clear up in 5 years or so.

My PTW is empty so I'm mostly focusing on seasonals.

I'll give higher priority to the seasonal anime I like the most and watch the rest whenever I can. For example, I still haven't watched the latest episodes of Lazarus and Kijin Gentoushou since they have low priority, I'll probably watch them today.

There is no point watching most of it. I rather watch a small quantity of good anime, rather than a large quantity of bad anime.

I try to mix seasonals with some older anime I am interested in.
I do not really have a dedicated backlog or ptw list, it's mostly in my head.

My ptw on my profile are the anime I intend to watch for the 2025 AWC.
I pre-planned the shit out of this challenge

I don't keep up with seasonals and just watch what I think looks interesting that has already released. I guess I don't really have a "backlog" and instead just have a growing PTW.

But my "plan to watch" is literally planned. I have a long playlist of anime episodes scheduled out, so I just turn that on and watch whatever is up next. I have it planned out about 250 episodes in advance, so it takes out most of the decision making early, and I can just focus on enjoying whatever I'm currently watching. Once I get through a decent bit of it, I will add more shows and build it back up. As it stands now, it'll probably get me through the end of the year.

I don't, my non completed list is a black hole, that I may or may not pick out random shows when I want to watch something outside seasonal.

I scroll through it and decide what I'll watch based on what I want to watch the most at the moment, and recently moving those titles to the on hold section. And with seasonals I'm very selective and usually don't have many titles to follow per season.

I don’t worry about it. If I hear later down the line that the show was exceptionally good I might move it up the queue, but at the end of the day there is no real need for me to finish them.

I just remember that there is no time limit. You can add as many anime as you'd like to your plan-to-watch list, and if it takes you months or years to finally get around to it, then that's okay. It can also help to find what works best for you, whether that means watching multiple seasons of a show back-to-back or only watching one and then watching something else. What works for me is not having one super long plan to watch list. I try to break it up by year or genre, that way if you're in the mood for something, it's easy to pick something.

A couple years back I deleted everything in my PTW that wasn't "Not yet aired". Now I will watch an older anime when the mood is right and it doesn't feel like a chore from a massive checklist.

I avoid watching too much Airing series - i restrain myself because I know excitement can fade over a week. A series that could have been good if all episodes had been available can turn into a bitter experience, either from my own impatience or bad cliffhangers.

Simple, I don't keep a literal backlog.

I don't use my Plan to Watch list, except to make a mental note of obscure anime that I'm interested in but will probably forget if I don't write it down somewhere.

As for anime that I've been meaning to watch but putting off... yes, they exist, but I don't let those bother me. It's easy to forget about those when I'm keeping busy with a bunch of seasonals and going through a handful of older shows very slowly.

@Lucifrost Yes indeed, that definitely helps in narrowing down the anime to to watch and be more selective. This thread is directed to people who watch 10 to 30 shows per season.

Try to be more choosy about anime with large amount of episodes, and focus more on OVA's and movies. OVA's and movies are easier to knock out in comparison, but it is easier said than done.

I avoid watching more than 10 anime per season and I watch something else from my PTW list from time to time (most of the time a movie or a series with less than 12 episodes).โ€‹Also, I delete anime from my ptw list if they are there for more than 2 years.

I don't see my PTW as a backlog, but as a pre-selected pool of options. I keep it briefly below 300 entries, so I can only add when I previously watched some. And from time to time, I move stuff over to dropped without actually watching anything. So "dropped" is kind of my 2nd PTW :)

The purpose of the PTW is to have a set of candidates for group watches (so others can check what we both want to see) and for AWC 2025 entries to pick from. I have no intention to ever "complete" it.

I don't, and likely will never. TBH, I probably should just stop adding random seasonals that look interesting and only add stuff, I know I will like. It would help if I stopped procrastinating and I actually watched anime too lol. Think I am just going through a soft burnout right now.

I watch what I want to complete from the On Hold list in between seasons, when nothing else is airing and drop the ones I don't. The Plan to Watch list are not a backlog, they're suggestions. Also I'm watching 15 shows, but it's not like they all have an episode released on the same day. There are two or three days a week with nothing airing at all in which I could watch a show.

The best way to get rid of your backlog is not to have one in the first place, though.

@Szczelajo I also can mention that I make little bingos for myself - when I finish my current one I will start this one [with anime from year 2000 - I want to watch] [well I will start Inuyasha this summer, so little out of schedule]

I have made those up to 2012

Last time I read a thread like this, I had a packed ptw list with loads of shows I was itching to get around to. Over time I've chipped away at the majority of titles I really wanted to get around to. There's plenty left in my ptw list and a few decent shows like Monster and Showa Genroku Rakugo Shinju i want to get under my belt. Plus LotGH Gaiden OVA, can't wait to watch that, but need some time without the kids interrupting to pay attention.

After watching 6 years of seasonals, and with so many coming out, I don't have time or patience to wade through them all trying to find the few worth my time. Just wait on reviews and recs, plus pick a select few that catch my eye.

So despite having 586 in my ptw list, most of them are random older shows, that might, or might not be any good, will have to watch them and find out. Plus loads of older OVAs and movies I'll get round to one day. I have a fondness for obscure OVAs.

So in answer to OP, all the shows I wanted to watch I have, and the rest I'll get round to, one day.......

I got old enough that interesting new anime became hard enough to find that I had time to watch old stuff. I'm amazed when people say they watch like 10+ shows every season these days and then I get equally amazed when 8 of those shows are sludge like "That Time My Washing Machine Stopped Working so I Had to Learn How to Make Clothes From My Cute Neighbour and Now We're a Couple I Think?!?!?!?!" or some permutation of that. I enjoy the occasional slice-of-life show as much as the next person but the current landscape of endless extremely modest escapism paired with ridiculously low-stakes MMO-influenced isekai nonsense leaves me feeling very under-served as an anime fan.

@LotteGiants I think this is a pretty good description for my situation as well. I'm not particularly interested in most of what's releasing now, with only a few notable exceptions. So it's easy to prioritize existing completed shows when you don't have any interest in what's currently releasing.

If feeling unmotivated or indecisive, just pick any show that's remotely interesting and watch it with low expectations. Give it a chance to entice you. Move on if it doesn't, or enjoy it if it does. Rinse and repeat.
