Would you like to move to Japan if you had the chance? Or at least spend a long time there. Is it based on your love for animanga or do you already have an opinion about Japan in general? What souvenirs, especially anime related, would you like to bring back from Japan?

It might be cool to live some of the time there like what my sister does with Spain.
I think it probably would be too much for me though, especially if it was just me, I'm really bad and get anxious enough at unfamiliar places in my own country, let alone somewhere like Japan. I have a cat at home also, although my eldest sis and my nephew live a few streets away, so they could see her. Still wouldn't be fair on her though, as she's just as anxious as me and only likes me lol.

I think I've always been fascinated by Japan long before liking Anime. Always loved Kaiju and other Japanese movies, puroresu and their Trains and tech.

I definitely would like to go to Akihabara if I could, I think I would try to find some Rin Tokikaze merch, but I think even in Japan that would be pretty rare.

Eh. My friends and family are here, plus the work culture in Japan is super icky. If things go absolutely haywire where I live I'd consider it, though. I did enjoy my couple of weeks out there last year, so it's certainly would be higher up on my list for countries to live.

Yeah, I’d totally go if I had the chance, but I wouldn’t wanna stay in the big cities (Too crowded for me.) I’d rather chill in one of the smaller towns, enjoy the scenery, the food, and just the vibe. I do like anime, but it’s not the only reason I’d go. I’d probably grab some anime merch while I’m there. Maybe a few figures or artbooks. I'll also get snacks.

No, ABSOLUTELY NOT.
I like anime and japanese media but i'm not willing to assimilate into their social norms or be employed in that brutal work culture or learn the language.

Maybe for a few months of vacation would be a cool getaway, but I don't think I would live there full time. I'd maybe live there for a little while if I was like self employed or something so I could avoid their harsh work culture.

I'd like to get involved in local groups for the outdoor activities I enjoy, and see how they differ from back home. I'd also be interested in just exploring the greater Tokyo area like it was a video game or something, like an urban backpacking trip.

Don't think I'd bother with any souvenirs. I'm not all that interested in trinkets. If anything, I'd probably want to create something as a means of documenting my trip, be it sketches of places I visited, a photo album, a video documentary, something like that.

I know a lot of folks that have done so, and I've heard it's kind of a mixed experience for Americans. That kind of warned me off, when I was offered an opportunity with Nachi Robotics to go to Japan for about 6 months, to train on their robots. I'm kicking myself now, because I should of done it. The people I was listening to went over there as totally ugly Americans. I, at least, had a little bit of background working with Japanese engineers. And learning a bit about the country through anime, movies and studying history. Today I believe the experience would have been fantastic. And I probably would have brought me home a gyaru :^D

Not really....I guess it would be interesting to visit; however, outside of maybe going to the Gunpla shop, the stuff I would want to do would be completely unrelated to anime. Mostly food, history/museums, traditional culture is my interest. Frankly that is my only interest in traveling, and again, I probably have like 7-10 other countries, I would rather go to.

Plus I don't see why you need to fly to Japan, simply to engage in stuff, you frankly can easily get overseas anyway.

Franly the only places, I would willfully choose to live outside of North America would be countries that are somewhat familiar to me, or could eventually develop a sense of familiarity, like Australia/NZ. Maybe Norway? If I was feeling adventurous. I don't like the feeling of not being able to fit in, and the reality is the white Canadian dude, isn't going to ever fit into a country like that, so yeah.

No, I would not like to live in Japan.

I've read and heard about the difficulties of living in Japanese society as a foreigner. Another big concern is the work culture over there. I'm not dead against it, but it's more likely that I'll stay in my current country and cultural sphere.

As for traveling, absolutely yes. I've only been to Tokyo briefly. Would like to go around the country more, maybe for a month or two.

For anime settings specifically, I'd love to visit the old town by the river in Tokyo as seen in 3-gatsu no Lion, even if I'm not sure that kind of neighborhood still exists in that form. Outside of Tokyo, the campgrounds, lakes and mountains around Mount Fuji, as seen in Yuru Camp, and Enoshima and the nearby beaches, featured in stuff like Slam Dunk and Bunny Girl Senpai.

Kyoto is a must, and many of the sights already feel familiar thanks to the many school trip arcs in anime. But I especially want to visit Uji, the home of Kyoto Animation and the setting of Sound! Euphonium.

Not too keen on souvenirs, as I don't like buying things to collect... Will have to see once I'm there.

nah, been there twice and you can tell how shy/lonley their culture is, not to mention most foreigners tend to say they mostly talk to other foreigeners

not to mention their natural disasters seem pretty fucking scary, literally right after my first trip, they got hit by the worst typhoon in a long ass time, and fuck if i wanna experience an earthquake

If I could support myself with my own entrepreneurial work to not be reliant on the salaryman culture like the some who dare to stake their own claims in life out there since... forever, and be able to travel for periods of time in the case of routine exhaustion, spiritual journeys, and homesickness, sure. Visas aren't easy and Japan's immigration system is like an exclusive club, you either go the official routes they set up or you know someone or someone has taken interest in you enough to be your sponsor. I've not been a fan of the English teaching program thing either, so it's rather slim for me, other than routine visits in and out of the country.

Plus, like many here who know, living in Japan isn't an anime otaku paradise non stop. As much as taxes out there are properly being put to use and its conveniences are wonderful, Japan has its own problems and its own culture shock and hurdles for new immigrants and residents. A lot of the small things you like back at home? They will not exist in Japan in mainstream venues. That's only the tip of the iceberg. Come prepared, and most of all, willing to adapt.

Another thing about Japanese citizenship: They do not do dual or multiple citizenship. You are allowed to own property and real estate in Japan even as a foreign owner however, but you also have to take care of taxes and ensure it's up to code, even if you're back at home. Just something to bring up as an FYI.

Like if it was my only way to get out of the US, probably, otherwise there are too many issues that I have that would make permanent residency not ideal for me. Besides their toxic work culture, as someone who is not strictly heterosexual, the way their legal system has been dragging their feet on the legalization of same-sex marriage in spite of multiple court rulings saying the ban is unconstitutional, it really doesn't make it the most appealing place to live long term. If I were to do a study there for my education, it's one thing, but unless a lot changes about their work culture and legal system, I don't think its the right fit for me. I'd probably be much more at home in Ireland where my ancestors are from.

I would for a few societal and cultural reasons - although anime is the icing on the cake.

It's a shame about the souvenirs, because I have no intention on buying anime-related goods over there. When you think about it, buying manga, novels or figurines can be done easily. Music from anime/idol CD you find online could be nice but takes space for a few music tunes while you can buy the digital copy. I'm not really interested in gachapon or Pokemon plushies either - maybe I find one very nice but I'm not hunting them down. The only buy exception might be copies of local magazines like Shonen Jump, AK-47 or Dengeki G / Dengeki Moeoh - but I think I've had enough paper-based stuff in my life. You can buy even japanese anime artbooks online but these serialized issues you can't. Buying souvenirs, yes, anime-related? unlikely.

I think I would rather visit first then maybe have an extended stay for a few months. I don't speak Japanese even if I fan sometimes understand a few things very roughly so that would be difficult. I would have trouble with loneliness since how their culture is it seems hard to meet people when I myself am mote introverted and shy, although some Japanese people approach foreigners to practice their English I heard. As for a job I would only be interested in working in some artsy thing or something so I don't get stuck with with same expectations on me as more corpo jobs.

Here are the pros and cons from someone who has lived in both Japan and North America and is planning to go back to live there again.

Pros
- everything is relatively cheap. You go to a restaurant and you'll buy a bowl of ramen for a few dollars. Chicken on rice a few dollars.

- japanese woman love a gaijin, this is coming from a Japanese guy

- it's one of the safest places on the planet in terms of crime. I think there persecution ratio is something like 99.9 percent

- if your into figures and anime then yes Akiba is your wet dream, along with all the maid cafes, Loli cafes, catgirl cafes, whatever your into it's there,

- for those who don't like crowds like me. The country is beautiful, it's literally surrounded by a white sand beach in every direction, and inwards onto land you have mountain ranges with lakes, for the enjoyment of the outdoors for any season

- the transportation system is second to none even if your in butt fuck no where and you want to go a city the country is so small it'll more than likely take an hour max

- the food is delicious

- the hospitality 2nd to none, every girl working, every guy at a gas station is going to smile and bow there head to you at least 5 times per visit and say thank you 5 times, there is no such thing as tipping in Japan you don't ever pay anything extra

- if you're worried about language barrier go to Okinawa basically the Hawaii of Japan but with a massive American presence because the US military base there form ages ago. I have several friends that live there

Cons

- it is prone to Earthquakes however if you choose to live inland it doesn't effect you plus all the buildings are earthquake proof however this is still scary because mother nature has fucked some cities up multiple times, I myself live on a fault line coast in North America so I don't care as much
- language barrier especially if you are very shy or a recluse, you sort of have to come out of your cage and speak up to overcome it, however there are a lot of expat clubs, hangouts and bars,

- English is the 2nd language in Japan so you are forced to learn it so if you talk to anyone in highschool or college or just graduated they will definitely be able to speak it but they will be embarrassed of their accent so you kind of have to try to force it out of them

- if you assimilate into the work culture, you will be working 6 days a week and expect overtime and forced drinking however you can obviously work part time at bunch of places, the full time salary is meant for more established office businesses, If you work at a restaurant, store, shop, mall, it doesn't apply.

It's an awesome place however going to a new place is scary and I don't recommend anyone going there to live there without visiting first. For a vacation I can 100 percent recommend it, besides the flight and maybe hotel, you can Airbnb instead, it will be dirt cheap. If you really strapped for cash hell you can stay in a tent, a capsule hotel, or even a manga cafe for 10 bucks.

There's good food, woman, men, beaches, mountain lakes, anime, mega cities, countrysides, sun, rain, snow, and so much to do.

Sorry about my rant

While it would definitely be cool to live in Japan, I am not entirely sure.

Yes, Japan is a very beautiful country but the tourism over there is so bad that the government had to make new laws for tourists. It would also be very difficult for me to assimilate bc Japan has an entirely different language, different writing systems, and cultural norms. All I have is one college semester's worth of Japanese language knowledge. I don't know how common English is over there.

Don't get me wrong, I would definitely like living in Japan and I would likely move there if America gets worse, but I do not know if I actually would.

Sure, but I'd probably work for an American employer, or at least find a more 'with-the-times' employer that avoids many of the pitfalls mentioned by other users in regards to the notorious work culture.

Of course. It's the most pro free of speech place on Earth. Not many people are going to complain to what you do with fictional characters, what genres you like, etc. It's very accepted there. In the West, if you say you like ecchi in the West or like any hentai genres, you'll labeled as a potential criminal. Japanese people needs more pro-Japanese gaijins like me. I'll def die and be buried in Japan. I'll sold my soul and body to Japan. I'll renunce my native citizenship to obtain Japanese citizenship.

Considering I want to be an Asian, of course I want to live in another Asian country.

Saying that, you should try out Strider. And if you're thinking what I'm thinking, yup, it's the manga that inspired the video game and the character always seen in Marvel Vs Capcom. By the way, hope you make it out to Lake Baikal someday.

lol yeah, like, Caucasian elitists always act meek and composed or get grumbly or act cocky until they get on a computer, but Latinx elitists.... They openly declare war and belittle you or what they hate in the open, no matter where. And don't go pointing the race card at me, people, please. I equally love and hate everyone.

Of interest, I remember when I had a Capcom Design Works book, and there was a staff feature section, one of which in the pages had a flowchart of a daily Capcom worker's routine for humor. I think it was a daily routine schedule of Daigo Ikeno or Akira Yasuda back in the 1990s and early 2000s (I think 2002). Their routine consisted of, roughly (correct me and look it up if I'm wrong):

8am: Wake up, get dressed, wash up, make breakfast
9am: Tend the apartment, clean up a bit
9:30am: Go to work
10am: Enter in, salute boss
10am-1pm: Show artwork and game's progress to producer, work with programmers and devs, boardroom meeting on video game's progression, watching research material for the game
1pm-1:30pm-ish: Lunchtime
2pm: I remember now that I think Daigo or Akira was sleeping at their desk
2:30pm: In a dark humor feature, Daigo or Akira was on the floor, exhausted. They made a trip to the doctor to oversee their condition.
3:30pm-6pm: Work some more, draft up new art and character concepts
6pm-7ish: Dinnertime, I think they went to a Brazilian or Hispanic restaurant, they always go out somewhere new to eat
8-9pm-ish: Worktime drinking with boss, they went to an Izakaya
10pm-1am: Finishing up artwork, wrapping up for the next day, go home
1am: Daigo or Akira's freetime, they were practicing Capoeira
2am: Bedtime. Repeat!

I'm not sure what game they were working on, but I think they were working on Onimusha when this chart was made.

I've considered this a few times over the years. I had a little interest in a long stay in Japan before but rn it'd fuck up my life too much unless I have my partner and cats with me. I can't live without them.

Also to answer the second question, my fascination with Japan started with animanga but quickly I expanded to overall interest. I'd love to visit all over especially outside major cities as I feel like I'd enjoy the less busy places.
