Have you ever dropped a title/franchise that you loved and that had a lot of meaning for you? Or, conversely, have you ever become a fan of an anime that you previously despised at best and widely criticized? How did you come to this conclusion and how painful and rewarding was this experience for you?

I dropped the Pokemon anime and many other kodomo series that I liked, for obvious reasons.

While I agree with the overall idea that loving and hating are remarkably similar, when it comes to entertainment, I consciously put effort to avoid that sort of scenario since I feel the maximalization of pleasure should be goal of consuming entertainment. That being said, going from a hater to a fan, would be good for increasing pleasure, so for my example, I was not a fan in of Madoka's original anime conclusion, but Rebellion fixed the main issue I had with the ending.

However, I came in Puella Magi Madoka from Magia Record, the gacha game, not the anime and I essentially watched the anime and movie in quick succession, so there really wasn't much time for me to gain a feeling of reward.

On that note though, not a fan of Exedra, they had a working gacha game, why throw it all away for a new one without a home screen lacking Live2D? Give me back my Lycoris Recoil collaboration character home screen, and give me back my Momoko homescreen. I accept the money and time spent on it however. Magia Record is a nice memory to remember. Exedra, I will continue to ignore, partially because of the homescreen issue and partially because I no longer have the time nor budget to spend on a gacha game.

I've been trying to get back into Inuyasha, despite for some reason in my life, it is always being frequented by assholes I know in my life. Not a bad show, but that sort of thing is really asking me if something supernatural really doesn't want me to watch that show.

I do know that Inuyasha does ease up on his asshole brooding and becomes less insufferable as the show goes on. I like that it's also not hesitant to show how brutal and savage the worst of Feudal Japan could be either.

I dropped Yu-Gi-Oh! Go Rush when I heard it was gonna be renewed for a third year, then I picked it up again when it ended and I changed my mind about it; definitely more enjoyable when watched at the pace of 1+ episodes per day, rather than weekly. That means that dropping it was the right choice, I should have dropped it earlier.

Not to my knowledge. The only time I might drop an anime that I really enjoy is when it gets too long and repetitive. I guess I would have to say Pokemon and Detective Conan fall into this. I like the series and all, but they just didn't change things up enough to keep me going with them.

Nowadays, yeah, I constantly drop mid-shows, which I somewhat enjoy to save time. Mainly because the narrative isn't compelling enough for me. For example, shows that I just turn my brain off to enjoy after a long day. There are enough of those shows out there that I can safely drop without missing much, especially if it is a bog-standard Isekai.

I have started watching isekai fantasy anime and actually I like some of them specially those with protagonist with unlimited power but they don't realise that themselves.
I always hoping to find a guild with many beautiful waifu like fairy tail

Now I'm older I like precure which I didn't like when I was younger because precure is for girls.
Now I like such laid back anime over psychology thriller with military and political social issues like psycho pass and death note.
Anime as a whole have now become my happy place to get away from reality, but it started out as adrenaline pumping adventure thrill seeking place.

It's like I'm that anime protagonist who gave up being a superhero for a quiet relaxing life

Definite agree. I've become a lot more selective when it comes to long-running anime or those that have a high episode amount. Like, if it runs for that long, it better be good.

In my personal opinion, Kindaichi runs laps around Conan. And Pokemon... while I hold a faint sense of nostalgia for it being the first anime I've ever watched... rewatch value is limited by the 'arc' one grows up with.

Cardcaptor Sakura and Blue Reflection. The reason? Love Live Superstar and its message of not letting one's own timidity hold oneself back from pursuing big dreams made the former two look overly passive and pretty much made them obsolete. Sakura had D&D Mage level god powers, but ended up stuck in her small little town. Hinako from Blue Reflection was told "Sure, you can't dance anymore, but it's okay because you can just settle into an ordinary domestic life." But Kanon from Superstar rose from her paralyzing depressive funk to become a confident, talented singer-songwriter going to the Vienna Academy of Music to study and sing on an international level.

I felt good about this, actually. It's a natural part of growing up, and I realized that I didn't want to be stuck in place and just being satisfied with small dreams like I've spent too much of my life doing. Knowing that my tastes can change over time also makes me excited to see what else I have to discover and surprise me next.

I loved Naruto, but when the fillers started showing and it got longer, I stopped watching and criticized the studio's style.
But when the series ended, I went back to watch it without the fillers, and it was truly amazing.

I can't really say I hate a title, as it is a strong word, and mostly because I'm sane enough to drop it fast enough when a series hurts my senses. This kind of love-hate is not really applicable -to me- which might be close enough to @six20 statement on that.

Some of my earliest anime, maybe I couldn't watch anymore without getting bored or find them generic. So I guess it's a like -> dislike. However, my PTW list is never ending its growth and while I do re-watch, I carefully curate which shows I actually re-watch (they're not all 9s/10s but at least they're all above 7).

Anime that I love but I don't continue watching, it's not because I hate it, it's because there are too many episodes that I can't watch them all in my time. And anime that I don't love but I continue watching, it's not that I don't love it, it's just that it's not my favorite genre. It's a romance anime. Some anime, I don't watch even one episode and I drop it. And it's like this 2-3 times. But when I endure watching it a little bit more, I find that it's really good, better than I thought and I love it, even though it's not my favorite genre.

I dropped attack on titan and one piece (for one piece I dropped it multiple times lol) and both were important anime shows to me at the beginning of my anime journey.

@swashingtondude exactly brother! I have no problem with long running anime as long as they can keep the story interesting and have some sort of progression. Pokemon and Conan felt like they were just spinning their wheels at this point. So much so that it makes me wonder if we'll ever get a resolve with them. I'll definitely have to try out Kindaichi though. 🤔

Ooooh I had no idea that Blue Reflection had an anime. I'm a big fan of the Playstation Vita and Nintendo Switch games. Does the anime link up with them at all as far as you know?

@Retro8bit Sort of. The idea of the anime is that it takes the first game's premise and says "What if the girls had more serious mental health problems?" The characters also show up in the second game, but with a completely different story that only surface-level references the anime, with only the missing mom plot being continued and resolved.

Huh... A bit more confusing than I was anticipating I must admit. Still, I'm a big fan of the games so I might check them out just for that sake alone. Thanks for bringing it up in this thread! 😁

Probably Detective Conan. I love the anime, but the story was getting nowhere fast and it's overall plot. It was fun as just a whodunit episodic mystery if you go into it with that mindset.

Tower of god. I loved the webtoon but just wasn't enjoying season 2 of the anime very much. It was sad to drop it but there are so many better shows out there.

Same with me. A shame since I really loved it at first.
