Historically Weak Spring 2025 Season or Just Me?

Has anyone felt that this season of anime, Spring 2025, has been particularly weak? Like the options for shows were already slim pickings, and of those I chose to watch, I've mostly either dropped them or am about to.

I don't mean to be some pessimistic cynic. I've watched a lot of anime, many good ones and many bad ones, so I'm not some tourist with a misconception of what a typical seasonal is like. It just feels like historically weak.

Ironically, Summer 2025 seems like it's gonna be absolutely loaded with great anime and recurring shows, so was this spring season just a coincidental scheduling oversight? Or, am I outright delusional and this season is perfectly fine? How do y'all feel about this Spring 2025 season?

You're right, anime has been so dead past couple of years. No good originals, no good adaptations just mid after mid after mid. It's like the industry has shrunk 3 times in size

This season is what I consider the weakest in a few years. I thought last season was amazing.

I can only speak for myself and my taste that I have a similar feeling. Literally nothing from this season has interested me yet. I just recently found out that the last season I didn't watch anything from was Winter 2007, and now it might happen again))

Maybe one day I'll watch Lazarus, but I have very pessimistic expectations about its overall quality. And besides that, there's nothing even remotely interesting to me.

Just you. Well, not literally just you. There are others who hold and have expressed this view and opinion. But it's simply something that some people believe, ask, and claim every season, at least since I started regularly watching seasonals in 2021. This always gets said and brought up. Every season is apparently the worst one out there to someone. And the best one out there to someone. There is nothing unique in that respect to this season which sets it apart from all others whose quality have been similarly questioned.

For me, I'd say it's definitely stronger than the past three seasons of winter of 2025 and autumn and summer of 2024. The last season stronger than it was a year ago, with spring of 2024.

I don't see how so. My favorite series from this season, like Kowloon Generic Romance, Apocalypse Hotel, Kijin Gentoushou, Ballpark de Tsukamaete!, Mono, and Hibi wa Sugiredo Meshi Umashi already make it very much not weak. But if you're not into Sci-Fi and Slice of Life, then I can see someone saying and thinking that.

I think it's the third time I see a thread about how this season is weak and Summer will be amazing, but I can't agree: for me Spring is better than the last four seasons and Summer is full of sequels of terrible anime (not all of them, I look forward to the second seasons of 7th Prince, Reborn as a Vending Machine and Pokemon Concierge).

Personally I am eating good this season, watching 15 anime (16 if I count Apothecary Diaries from Winter). While it is true tht there is no particular big hitter for me (some shows have potential though), I appreciate the consistent quality of, simply put, 'good' shows.

Initially I was very curious about this season due to many promising looking originals, adaptions from rather unknown source material and a lack of high profile sequels as well as obivously trashy isekai/fantasy shows (Winter 25 had an abundance of these).

However original anime and anime from unkown source materials are a hit or miss (in your case probably a miss) and a lack good of sequels also implies a lack of 'safe picks'. This might be a reason why this season feels weak to you.

Yeah personally this is HUGE compared to last season at least. More generally I would say there has been a downward trend, but last season was the worst in a long while for me, this is a better season for me than I've had in at least a year or two.

*shrugs* i don't know if my opinion matters since i'm not a seasonal watcher but as far as ones that interest me go, i have added 18 anime to my PTW list for spring 2025, so for me it looks like a solid season.

Every anime season ever is the best or worst for someone because everyone has different tastes.

As a SOL fan...

I think ill be having good food in the next few weeks...

Shounen fans & people who only watch the popular stuff miss many good shows...

I think the problem this season is a shortage of strong battle shounen or isekai.

For battle shounen I guess there's Fire Force and Wind Breaker, but not sure if they can be called "big" or "popular." At least, not on the level of Solo Leveling, Demon Slayer, or even Dandadan.

For isekai, The Beginning After the End seems to have landed with a splat, and nothing else really seems to be drawing attention.

And Lazarus doesn't seem to be a sensational hit, exactly.

But this season's not weak at all for me. So much slice-of-life, comedy and romance to enjoy if you're a fan of those.

There's nothing outstanding that stands out, but the season's got a wide spread of 6-8's, which I really appreciate.

I can only agree with @WatchTillTandava as it is much of a biased look at seasons.

Sequels are hit-or-miss with people. You might get plenty of sequel shows you enjoy this summer, but some people don't have a watching list agenda similar to yours.

When you look at the figures of the top 9 anime of this season, nothing strikes particularly unusual to me, except maybe the floppy rating of TBATE. Now, is it deserved or not, that's another debate (I believe there is a thread about this calling out to "Japanese audience shit taste").

In fact, most shows this season have average ratings above 7 which is quite the feat. Nothing stands out as exceptional, but nothing stands out as bad.

Also, that may be only me, but I count 2-cour anime from Winter, whether it is well received Apothecary Diaries 2 or badly received Aparida

one look at the "top airing" list, it is evident, this is a trash season. I remember watching previews a month ago, and me and my brother were aghast for an hour straight. This is the worst spring line up in years.

I dunno...Ask the people who make a thread like this every single season. You say next season is "loaded", but I guarantee there will be at least one person who says it's the shittiest season ever, for all of time, nothing will ever be worse, until the season after that. Personally, in terms of things I care about, this season and next look about the same. 3 or 4 things I know for sure I'd watch and a few maybes.

I'm definitely watching far fewer shows than I'd expect to be watching for the Spring season; my list is usually double what it is now (and in rare cases, triple). Granted, a few of those are usually holdovers from the previous season, but for the first time in recent memory, they all wrapped up at the end of last season. I'm not complaining about the smaller number of shows I want to watch, though. I've often thought that Spring seasons were overloaded, so this is actually nice.

idk, i have liked more animes in this season than winter 2025, but undoubtedly summer will be the best season of the year and most likely the best in the last 5 years

Agree with you. It was a weakest Spring Season in a while.

The sequels and originals are pretty mid and not MOTHERING. :(

How good a season is will always be a subjective thing; personally I'm enjoying this season so far, Ninkoro in particular is great and most of the other stuff I'm watching are series I'm enjoying. I think this is a solid season, better than the last one at least

It is kinda weak imo, yeah. I still need to look into the new series that are out a bit more, but nothing really stands out to me so far except for the new konosuba ova. I'm definitely gonna watch that at some point.

Objectively, It's garbage. This is not up for debate. There is some serious mental gymnastics going on to say otherwise.

The opposite - I really like this season because of many hidden gem type underrated titles that just don't appeal to wider audiences. There is less generic shonen/isekai/romcom which is great and while there are no surefire AOTY type titles (except for one) I'm enjoying this season much more than the previous two.

This literally isn't something which can be objective. It - what anime different people like and find interesting and appealing, is something obviously subjective by definition. The mere fact that even one person (in this case I, but also others) disagrees is alone proof of its inherent subjectivity.
