@traed Tottori? that is NOT A DESERT! desertification means SPREADING OF A DESERT. sand dunes on an ocean shore do NOT a desert make. sand does not a desert make, there are multiple types of desert WITH NO SAND. tilt of the Earth takes BILLIONS UPON BILLIONS OF YEARS due to tectonic shift. not 150 years. electromagnetic field shifts have not happened on Earth for ... yet again billions of years... the North and South Magnetic Poles 'wobble' not shoot across the Earth at breakneck speeds. the North one moves right now about 10meters a year towards Siberia. once more not 150years. most desert definitions use 1" or less of precipitation per year; as their first and most important measurement. once the humans fully departed Earth, by the vegetation around the hotel the plants THERE are growing like gangbusters. the greenhouse gasses that humans SPECIFICALLY make stops accumulating and carbon etc. in the atmosphere... with more land covered by plants as the various parts of Earth's biome is reclaimed by flora... those gasses' amounts would REDUCE not INCREASE or STAY STABLE.

Yes, dunes arent a dessert just kind of like one. While the subtitles are correct it was called a desert im not sure it really was meant literally since they did show a forest in it too. As for the camel you can just assume it came from a zoo.

It doesn't take billions necessarily. A single earthquake shifted it before even.

@traed

tilt of the Earth's Axis effects how much of the North and South Hemispheres are closer to Sol while we orbit our star. also how long that one Hemisphere is in the Winter or Summer positions as well as how long Sol stays above the horizon. of course, the further N or S of the Equator you get the amount of time Sol stays off the horizons changes no matter the Season.

sigh. reread the article you cited about five times more and figure out where you messed up. 2 earthquakes changed the Earth's rotational speed so LITTLE that a human eyeblink 0.1000 seconds, is longer than those two earthquakes' effects on Earth COMBINED!

also, the 2011 quake cited? was the one that damaged Fukushima Nuclear Power Plant in Japan. the 2004 Indonesian one? was the one that caused the GIANT TSUNAMI which killed a LOT OF PEOPLE. of course, i already knew about them. were you even ALIVE for the '04 one?

21.5 to 22 hours long was the length of a day back 444-419 million years ago. i looked that one up since the article you cited only used the length of the year. which affects the Winter/Summer flipflop between North and South Hemispheres. your article also did not cite how long each Season was back then just that 420 days was a year. today a day is 23.9 hours long. 2.4-1.9 hours longer now than it was 444 million or so years ago.

also, if you do further reading? Luna's orbit around Earth is gradually getting larger and larger and larger. this means her gravitational effects on Earth and ours upon her will lessen over time as the distance between Earth and Luna increases. more than one astrophysicist has stated that Luna's distance to Earth increasing will slow down our planet's rotations. 3.8 cm (1.5 inches) per year is approximately how much further Luna drifts away from Earth right now. THAT is more important than Continental drifts and Earthquakes and blablablabla.

also, a slowing rotation on its axis will mean Earth's Time Zones will need to be adjusted sometime in a few million years. more hours per day? wider the Time Zones will have to be. each Zone right now is approximately 1 hour wide. say you're in the Eastern Zone for the USA. right on the Eastern edge of that Zone. it is out in the Atlantic Ocean if i remember correctly. so. at sunrise, 1 hour BEHIND you on the Western edge of that Zone Sol is not visible above the horizon yet. it is a combination of geographic distance along the surface of Earth and how much of Sol you can see at or below the horizon to the East. curvature of the Earth blablablabla. the slower Earth rotates, the longer that Sol takes to move from below the horizon to above it, if you want to keep the Time Zones at 1h Wide? they'll need to get Wider.

Surprised to see a desert outside ginza, it really was a a apocalypse.
The chance of human return to earth is shrinking by every episode.

The Tanukians are settling well into the Gingarou Hotel, though the food is getting a lot blander, and the need to find more unique food is in store. For that, both Yachiyo and Ponko going fishing...only to find a score of endless desert with a forest in the middle of nowhere as the perfect spot for more ingredients. However, the forest also hides a sandworm monster hidden in the midst, having eaten a camel and chasing both girls and Environment Checker Robot out of their way. The Nudel Merissa Scolopedra, as Ponko coins them as Earth's destroyers for the lands they inhibit, it turns into a time of survival for the trio to capture their target.

And just like fishing, Yachiyo having expended much of her power, Ponko steps up to the plate to offer herself as bait so that the robots can capture her. But Yachiyo clearly needing a recharge, leaves only the tanuki and the Environment Checker Robot to fend for themselves, though the former goes above and beyond to face her worst fears with the chainsaw, albeit still needing Yachiyo to save the day thanks to her spare battery.

At the very least, the Nudel being yet a food option is better than what's offered, and Ponko is being more likable now to help Yachiyo complete her quests and achieve new perks to her robotics.

@alshu It also could be a reference to that tense alien tentacle scene in the basement from Steven Spielberg's movie War of the World (2005). That was I was immediately reminded of; don't know the Vifam scene, though.
@Swiss_Bohemian Also the OG movie has a scene like that, where a survivor hides from martians who search with a tentacle thing device in a ruined house.

Nah, in the Tremors

The scene in question from Vifam doesn't have anything to do with worms...it's about a mechanical tentacle-kind-of-a-thing scanning the area and a little girl trying to avoid it. Very similar movements and angles with the scene here.

Also let me see, the first Tremors movie is from 1990 and the version of Vifam I have watched is from 1983, so your "Nah" is not even theoretically possible.

And yeah, there's a similarity between the monsters from Tremors and the giant sand worm here (different scale tho...but I have seen only two of the movies, maybe they get bigger later?), but this wasn't my point.
@alshu No, I meant that scene is taken FROM the Tremors films, one that has a NEARLY IDENTICAL scene to this with a graboid extending an inner tounque/tube or whatever to where some of the people are hiding. Which is what I meant this ia a tribute too.

It's a similar concept, but said scene with the girl from Vifam is closer to what happened here.

This was the first episode of the show that just didn't really work for me at all. That's definitely at least partly coloured by the fact that it's now clear the tanukians will be mainstays of the entire show, but also because none of the humour this episode went for worked for me at all and instead just pulled me out of the mood the show was going for. I also can't really say I came to this show for action or anything like that, so the sandworm battle also did nothing for me.

I also didn't particularly find Ponko endearing and still found her pretty damn annoying, and the rest of the tanukians are still really annoying as well. I really don't like that we're stuck with these annoying-ass characters as main characters for the rest of the show now, and I hope that doesn't just kill the show for me.

Best episode by far. I definitely didn't expect it to shift from a quiet post-apocalyptic vibe to full-on devil hunting. And Ponko is hands down the MVP this time. I’m sure no one’s calling her a scaredy tanuki anymore.she’s a devil hunter now. And her tearing up after tasting the nuke's meat was so heart "worming".

Wasn't expecting there to be action in this anime but more the glad that there is. I love Ponko so much in this episode, it helped to flesh her out from the rest of the family after the previous episode. The comedy is on point with this series, it really knows how to land a joke without making it feel too far fetched and ruin the emotional scenes. That bit of Ponko hiding and eventually stabbing the tongue of the nudel has got to be a masterclass in setups and subversions I could watch that bit for ages!
It is nice to see more of the ruins in Tokyo and an evasive species on top of that. Whatever doesn't kill you makes the dish tastier lol
