Well as long as I can see what it is I don't care for lower pixel quality. That's just going back to using the old ass tiny TV from like the 80s my dad had.

It only matters for newer stuff. I barely cared about the quality I was watching One Piece in until the animation needed higher quality to look right (the Megumi Ishitani episodes come to mind). Personal preference is 1080p but I can't see much wrong with 720p. Anything lower than 360p has to be really interesting though.

I hardly ever watch low-resolution anime shows. They are totally unwatchable, for obvious reasons. I only watch the HD anime videos.

It's everyone's personal choice of course, but if visual imperfections like that can actually spoil anime for you, I can't help thinking your media consumption must be pretty superficial. Personally, I've watched reconstructions of all the missing 60s Doctor Who episodes, some of which have probably been copied between VCRs multiple times, so 480p is a luxury.

This makes no sense. All anime with analogue releases was high definition before TVs could display that resolution. The problem comes from digital copies you find online using old codecs looking heavily pixelated since no one bothered to get something better in physical VHS release and digitize it with a more modern codec assuming the VHS qualityis good, likewise a physical release made more recent if dvd or bluray also may be better, unlessit was upscaled, since some upscaling ruins quality.

Those titles are completely new to me, but thanks for sharing.
@nirererin

Mahoutsukai Tai and Shamanic Princess are from a defunct studio most people only know because of Lain.
People only know of those if they either were in the Anime DVD sphere or the 90's/2000's magazine and blogosphere who covered such DVD's... either that, or from GIFs from profiles who post scenes from retro anime, which was my case (Though, contrary to most followers of such pages, I do actually watch the anime).
Not knowing of them it's somewhat expected.

Never having heard of Cutie Honey surprised me... though, come to think of it, the way I discovered it was almost a decade ago (And I myself only watched it this year) so I guess the franchise is really lacking some entry points.

I rarely seen a low-resolution anime show in my entire life. 95% of the anime shows (I watch) are HD resolution. I'm watching some HD anime right now. I'm watching Kantai Collection Episode 11, Season 1 ATM. The NSA can't see it on my computer, because I'm watching it on VLC Player, rather than streaming it from my web browser.

Not really. But I have found it intensely intriguing whenever I run into a half-decent show that never received a BD release. It's a con for sure (no, I don't want to watch something in 480p from a dvd rip), but never the determining factor.

This is exactly why I don't waste my time with pre-contemporary Anime streaming or any shitty digital copies of Anime that were never meant to be digitally converted in the 1st place. I would rather go out of my way to hunt down old Laserdisc copies of entire Anime series on Japanese Laserdiscs than to get a head ache trying to consume some super shitty ripped copy of Anime floating around on the internet. Even some shit they offer on Official platforms are sometimes even unbearable to me because they are still obviously just ripped from physical copies too when it comes to even Anime released in the late 2000s or even early 2010s.

Though I think I am an outlier to this because I have just been use to high fidelity all my life when consuming any home media entertainment. So if one is use to eating something like prime cut Wagyu ribeye or striploin steak their entire life every day, suddenly them eating a piece of McDonald's burger meat as a substitute would likely make one vomit even before they tried to swallow it. lol Specifically if it's McDonald's burger meat from North America.

I still find it hard to believe there are actual people out there who have consumed Japanese Anime all throughout their life only sitting at a computer for well over a decade now. Besides one eventually dealing with such things as hemorrhoid problems as they grow older they will also likely have to deal with such things a bad back problems and extremely bad posture too. I was reading recently in a magazine while waiting for a dental appointment that digestive issues have also been associated with sitting too long in computer chairs. Contributing to slowed digestion, acid reflux/heartburn, constipation, and increased risks to conditions like IBS as one grows older. lol Where even sometimes am not erven sitting down to consume entire Anime series at times. As an example, sometimes even consuming Anime on Official physical copies I will be in my mancave while shooting a few games of pool where I am basically surrounded by TV monitors wall mounted completely around my pool table.

I almost forgot laserdiscs were a thing. There is also beta max but I don't know if Japan used it. Problem with tape is it can decay and disks can become scratched where they wont play, though it is possible to restore them to a degree by resurfacing the plastic and using hydrogen peroxide to make the plastic more transparent again if it has yellowed.

The problem mainly is in lossy formats. A lossless format can always be re-encoded later but lossy it is destructive in how it works.

Im used to trash tier streaming from the past lol I do miss having a CRT though. I hate color banding on LCDs which is a lot more apparent in modern anime since they use gradients more than older anime. I get what you mean though on being used to a certain quality

These days I've been using a tablet and walk or use a stationary bike or lay down when watching anime. Some people have standing desks. Posture is more just staying one position too long rather than an exact position itself.

Actually, for some shows only being available in really shit resolution can make them better. Certain 2000s series and ancient OVAs just hit different in 360-144p man, not sure what it is

no, not really. I have a soft spot for early 2000s anime. they have a particular to them vibe that seems to be dead nowadays which outweighs the negatives. Well, the comedic ones at least. The ones that try to tell a serious story are harder to enjoy when the characters constantly appear off model and derpy looking.

Many, many times when venturing into old or obscure anime, especially OVA's, I haven't had much of a choice other than 480p or lower, I don't mind much if there really is no better way of watching it, never taken much away from my enjoyment.

No. I watched Legend of the Galactic Heroes and loved it. And well... it definitely wasn't in 1080p (and it also wasn't easy to find a place where I liked the subtitles and the audio wasn't fucked up). So yeah, that isn't going to stop me if I like the show.

i'd rather have bad visuals than bad sound. bad sound pulls me out far faster. i think it's because the primary way i used to watch anime was on youtube with the video scaled into the corner, resolution at a crisp 320p on my 2ds about a decade ago. as long as i can tell characters apart and positioning i don't really mind.

Have you ever dropped or lost interest in starting an anime after finding out it's old and doesn’t have a decent resolution, like 720p or 1080p?

One wouldn't have such a problem if they didn't only rely on streaming or internet piracy. Anime officially released on physical media even localized below 480p looks and sounds fucking better than some crappy pirated copy floating around the internet that was even ripped from even some series at 720p in the late 2000s.

This is exactly why I don't waste my time trying to consume pre-contemporary Anime series even on Official platforms. Commonly too often, even Official internet platforms that are offering licensed series from in their library from the past are simply just relying on ripping copies themselves from Official physical media (A prime example of this is what Funimation use to offer when it was still around which was the "Soul Eater" series, which was an atrocious quality experience for someone like me where I just dropped it).
@ColourWheel Glad I'm not the only one that wondered how Funimation f'ed up Soul Eater so badly. Although it did make plunking down the $$$ for the box set worthwhile.

You mean the Soul Eater Blu-rays or streaming?

Yes it was pretty obvious at the time, that Funimation was offering "Soul Eater" for streaming but likely all they did was rip the series from official physical copies just to add it to their platform even if they were likely legally licensing the series to distribute that way. I know this because I compared it to the 1st official DVD volume release that I bought. There are no digital artifacts (at least not to the extent that was being offered streaming at the time on Funimation) when consuming something straight from an actual official physical copy being played in a DVD player.
@ColourWheel Yeah at first I thought I was having issues with my video with all the nasty artifacting and ripping. But then I played the DVDs through the same computer and they were pristine.

Nah, just as long as I can actually see what's going on I'll watch it. I remember when I watched Angel Links a few years ago, half of the YouTube uploads were in 240p but I still watched them.
Only time video ruins it is stuff like AI upscales where it just smudges the screen. I almost went to see Interstella5555 in the cinema until I found out that it was a really shitty AI upscale.

Opposite for me, older anime tend to have good encodes on a reasonable size and in h264.
I torrent my stuff and hate 265 encodes so there have been more cases when I drop new anime because all you got available are some bloated h265 10bit encodes.

This is why I really wish streaming would suddenly die out and consumers suddenly becoming more interested in physical media once again in the West. Likely it could even make Anime on physical media drop in price dramatically and more affordable for those who bitch and whine about how pricy it is for them. Some of the reasons why physical copies of certain stuff that were even extremely popular at the time that have been basically discontinued in production was sometimes so extremely affordable to find even in used conditions that are "almost like new" is because so many used copies were just floating around to begin with making it so cheap to buy that way.

Back in the late 2000s I remember shopping online to randomly buy some stuff on physical media just to collect and simply just resorted to a used copy of the complete "Desert Punk" Anime series, basically saving myself over two thirds of the cost I would have spent buying a brand new unopened set at the time. Where even back then the complete "Desert Punk" Funimation release to me brand new was already extremely affordable for me at the time from what I remembered.

Even back in the very early 2010s, I was able to snag the entire "Samurai Champloo" collection for what seemed to me at the time as peanut change to me. Though maybe I am not a greatest example to show for since I was rolling around in excessive amounts of disposable income yearly that I just kept accumulating at the time (most would probably throw up knowing how much money I was making back then for doing such little work in my opinion even if my life was just consumed with what seemed like working 90% of the time if I wasn't simply just sleeping or eating. lol). Where if I didn't spend my disposable income, my wife would take it away and pool it back in our savings. Disposable income that I made from my job was treated like an allowance that would be taken away by my wife if I didn't end up spending enough of it by the end of each month. lol Simply put, I use to make a shit ton of money in the mid 2000s to early 2010s with very little time to spend and enjoy it because I was just perpetually working so much.

Even today I will be driving in my car and random see someone having a yard sale and more often than not finding Japanese Anime being sold for basically pennies on Official physical copies. Such as recently seeing the entire "Cowboy Bebop" series on DVD. Quite frankly I would end up buy it if I didn't already own it already on Physical discs. In fact there use to be a time in the mid 2010s when I would just buy any Anime I found being sold at yard sales whether I owned it or not just as a 'side' hobby to see if I could flip it around and sell it for more money to make a profit either online or on places like craigslist. More times than not I would end up hardcore banking over 10 to 20 times more than the original cost I originally invested in but I got bored doing that so I simply just pass shit up I already own on Physical copies no matter how cheap I end up seeing it being sold at something like a yard sale (not like I really needed the money to begin with lol).

There is simply just enough really good Japanese Anime that exists even post "turn of the century" that was just never meant to be digitally converted or consumed in such a way. Where the only real way to really appreciate some things in this medium is simply through Official Physical Media unless one is just use to eating dogshit quality when consuming Japanese Anime to begin with. lol

@ColourWheel Desert Punk; that brings back some memories. I never owned that one though.

I can remember spending many hours combing Ebay for used box sets. I got myself a nice little polishing wheel for CDs and DVDs, and I could make beat up old shit like new in a couple minutes. That's how I got my Slayers box set; used for $30 when new ones were going for about $160.

If I had to guess, I'd say about 1/3 of my collection I got used. The rest I waited until they were going on close out discounts at Amazon. Back when I was once swimming in disposable income, too. LOL

I just recently saw it being sold on ebay for around 35USDs for the complete collection used when shopping for other things to collect (That is a freaken 6 disc collection, which is a bargain at that price). Just shows how many Official copies of that Anime are still floating around to this day. lol and it's not some random unpopular trash franchise. lol

You should get the Funimation release if you are interested in collecting it on Official Physical copies. Just the western commentary extras is worth it for around 35USDs alone in my opinion for a good laugh. it was just that funny to listen to. lol It reminds me of the 1st time listening to the commentary extras from "Najica Blitz Tactics" in the early 2000s. Having a bunch of western voice actors in the industry talking about panties the entire time. lol Just with "Desert Punk" commentary extras, they end up talking about boobs instead. lol
