One of my fav literary devices is to have a character that mirrors the protagonist but follows an alternate path. Sometimes they get the bad ending and the protag gets the good ending, sometimes it is the opposite like with Gabi. These characters are often the highlight of the story. Think of Anakin in Starwars, or many of the villains in Naruto such as Pain and Gaara.
Both Eren and Gabi are brainwashed to kill an enemy they see as savages. Both are forced to confront their enemy's humanity, but where Eren doubles down Gabi follows a path that ultimately sets her free and makes for the most beautiful storyline in the entire plot symbolizing the end of the cycle of violence.
After killing Sasha in cold blood, Gabi is brought face to face with Sasha's family who takes her in as a refugee. As she's forced to reflect on the morality of the actions that led her there, she begins to break free from her indoctrination. After Sasha's father spares her life, through his forgiveness Gabi repents. However Kaya, in a fit of rage, makes an attempt on Gabis life demonstrating she is not yet free of the cycle of violence. Only once Gabi completes an act of heroism saving Kaya's life, the same Kaya who earlier attempted to kill her, does Gabi earn her redemption and is freed of the vicious cycle.
