At the end of each episode it says the days remaining, but in the last one it says 26, shouldn't it be 27?

I think it’s bc it took a day for Axel and Leland to get to Istanbul

ohhhhh thanks bro

I could recognize Spanish voices from a mile away, welp that's the version I got my hands on.

The search continues, as the crew fishes for leads after surveillance was totalled. This may as well be a filler search episode, caus all their efforts don't amount to much of anything in the end. Suppose we did get a bit of background though, between the trans person and the professor. But we're following stories to Istanbul.. which I feel would have been checked over by someone

The first place people should be checking in a manhunt across the globe are places with no cameras. Probably also has a couple of people who'd rat out your location

Fight animations are as good as always.

I didn't know Istanbul had such a slum area with people with brown skin. What did the animators mean by this?

This was an amazing episode for a couple reasons. The hunt for Skinner continues to intensify, we’re as close as anyone has been in years to finding him thanks to that Istanbul intel, but the more this show goes on, it’s clear that he’s not the monster he’s been made out to be.

Growing up is accepting that Skinner did nothing wrong and humanity clearly deserved to get wiped out if they were doing it to themselves and destroying the planet. You look at that video he sent his grandmother and this isn’t a dude who harbors any sort of ill-will towards anyone. Dude got laughed out a UN climate change meeting because he had the audacity to hold the biggest polluters to account.

But what made this episode amazing for me was the fact in a fucking anime, I just saw two characters have a discussion about and bond over the discrimination that Black people and transgenders face in society. That Doug convo damn near brought a tear to my eyes. Thank you Watanabe. Means the world to me. Always been an ally.

Hearing the call to prayer in Istanbul was also a dope moment, but LMAO at Leland wearing a Saudi outfit in Turkey 😂 not all Muslims are Arabs bro.

Didn’t have a ton of action in this episode, but when we did get it, it was dope. Axel vs the hoodlums was awesome, you can feel Chad’s touch all over this series.

Baited the hacker award. I’m surprised Skinner’s partner fell for that Axel bait. Can’t wait for next episode to hopefully get some more on him.

Honestly, this was the cleanest discussion of perspectives without any noise. Just plain and simple statements stated with openness, listening and understanding. This is the type of shit that needs to be replicated in real life without gaslighted. perfection

Right and you got racist neckbeards quoting me crying about this so you know Watanabe did something right.

Episode 3 was pretty good. The plot is finally starting to move, and I appreciate the backstory of our main characters. Though I'm not going to lie, the ending with the camera felt like a super convenient asspull xd
Although I'm not invested in the story yet, I'd say the atmosphere is the best part of this show, together with the soundtrack, amazing work.

Damn, so many L takes in this thread.

Loved the episode. The chase is heating up as we get our first true lead. Only thing I was wondering is how is this old lady safe? Pretty sure if this happened irl she and everyone related to Skinner would be hunted down by someone. Maybe she will be, idk.

A real, "our hacker is bigger than yours," scenario in this one. :P I cracked up when she stated her username. Having a username that is the complete opposite of who they are is kind of a perfect and subtle play on the internet persona. That idea reiterated by some of the comments in this thread, haha!

Most of it is just grown ass losers screeching over a black guy and a trans woman lmfao

@JizzyHitler

It's especially hilarious bc this has always been Watanabe sensei's style. Lazarus ain't special. Samurai Champloo for example is influenced by Western hip hop.

And anime has always been influenced by the West. Western animation originally influenced anime. Akira Toriyama was inspired by Jackie Chan movies. Hirohiko Araki's entire series JoJo's Bizarre Adventure is heavily influenced by Western music and fashion. Other series like One Piece, FMA, Attack on Titan, and many more also have Western influence one way or another.

I'm not trying to state that the West is superior or anything, but complaining about Lazarus' western influence is hilarious.
If I had to choose between One Piece and a girlfriend...I think I'll go with One Piece

The parkour is the onyl thing saving this series so far. The animation somehow tanked in the last 2 episodes, the dialogue is boring, none of the cahracters are interesting and even the opening is among the worst from this season.

Well thought I would give this a try....and it's no Bebop that's for sure. It's like a crappy Suicide Squad, but everyone's gonna die. And I don't know the characters all just...suck. The MC is obviously just a Spike clone, I can't take the black dude seriously when he's wearing stuff from Michael Jackson's closet, and what's his deal? He was a scientist but is also good at driving and packs a gun? What a just mish mash of traits. Then stereotypical mousey Asian hacker girl, skank blonde who isn't even really attractive (how do you screw up hot blonde?) and I don't get the point of the useless kid at all. Herschel is a skinny Jewish Amanda Waller I guess. (Is there a Jewish theme with the dreidel in the OP?)
Plot is OK, I'm sure there is more to it and more will be revealed. Kinda boring though, the "bad" guys just constantly appearing so Spik...or whatever his name is Gargonzola? can parkour their ass is already getting old. Always love it when I guy with a gun just stands around and waits for an unarmed guy to get close enough to knock or take the gun away 9_9
Also don't do international settings if you can't get them right, love how the Istanbul slum had what looked like a racially diverse American city for hoodlums. At least the little girl looked Mediteranean. Then Skinner's grandma (Skinner yeah real Turkish name), obviously an old Muslim woman making Baklava and in his video he says he hopes to be home to see her for Christmas...Christmas? Yeah don't want to miss the big Christmas parade in Istanbul...well I guess Santa Clause was based on a guy from Turkey. LOL
Anyway can't say I'm expecting much out of this, now that I think about it, it's basically a prequel to the plot of I am Legend. Not sure why he would save everyone just for finding him though, doesn't really make sense. Why go through all this elaborate plot if you're just willing to go "darn you caught me, well I guess everyone gets to live, shucks"?

First of all, who came up with the idea of disguising themselves as an Arab sheikh to blend in with the crowd in Istanbul, lmao? And what happened to the girl whose house they destroyed and filled with street thugs?!

@thebrentinator24 You're tilting at windmills, all of this was in Watanabe's last show.

@Marinate1016 I don't think he adds this as something meaningful as an ally. Rather, for him as a big Americanophile, it's a bit of a bingo of current American culture. Just note that he never did this before a couple of shows in the last 10-15 years (which were also a collaboration with Western producers), and it's become much less so after the controversial responses to similar elements in Carole and Tuesday. Zombieland Saga did it in a much more ironic and sincere way, in my opinion. Although then people devalued Lily by dragging her into an internet culture war.

@Fukoku Just because people criticize certain Western trends in anime doesn't mean they're criticizing or denying all Western influence in anime. I get what you're saying, but those kinds of blanket arguments are always pretty dumb and easily refuted with context.

@JizzyHitler I find it kind of funny that people post-Carole and Tuesday are trying to make a big deal out of the fact that Watanabe's new show makes a brief reference to minorities. As if a cursory and minimal mention of social inequality is more scandalous and controversial than depicting Mars as a metaphor for migrant issues (God, I'm tired of counting how many shows have done that in recent years) or writing a female Trump impersonator as the mother of one of the female leads.

@SouthRzVa A brief monologue on racism, a token trans character, a culturally insensitive depiction of Turkey, and baklava. Are you genuinely surprised by the huge amount of trash here? I won't even look at all the pages because I can literally predict a huge woke vs anti woke battlefield there.

@RobertBobert bro cowboy bebop had an entire 2 episodes on gender identity about a hermaphrodite, its not a post carole and tuesday thing you just get easily offended at stupid shit and hyperfocus on it cause your politics begins and ends at online culture war shit from 2016, hence why your even bringing up carole and tuesday to me a show I never mentioned.

@JizzyHitler Who told you I was offended by anything? Spare me the projections, please. That's the first thing. Second, Cowboy Bebop basically used it as a sci-fi twist without any attempt to connect it to the cultural debates that wouldn't come about for another 15-20 years. Carole & Tuesday was clearly his first foray into that territory, since that show was not only developed with Western producers and creators, but also directly discussed these issues in the context of sexuality and gender. If simply holding that fact in your mind means "offended" to you, then you're no better than the people you're blaming for their slights. Not to mention that, as I mentioned above, trying to link fantasy radiation-exposed hermaphrodites to trans people is pretty transphobic.

The more we learn about Skinner, the more he seems like a saint. I’m starting to think this whole doomsday scenario might be something he made up to teach humanity a lesson.
I also don’t think it’s going to be easy to find the hacker who's helping . So this person might be the other hacker trying to track Skinner down too.

The tokenization in this show is a bit annoying from how it distracts. A character can be trans without it being their whole personality and explicitly stated instead of implied when making that speech even though same characters already saw that fact which is a case of telling instead of showing. A character can be Black and not give some story that doesn't feel believable when you know here has been Black Nobel Prize winners already even when excluding Peace prize, so why would he even get that mad right off if he knows the other guy doesn't even know what he is talking about? You only get mad when it is actually discouraging from there being hint of truth but there was no truth there so all we are left with is a Black man portrayed as aggressive. Not saying you can't touch on certain topics but if you do it has to be done well and this isn't it.

Wearing the Saudi clothes in Turkey trying to fit in but standing out was funny though. Not in a laugh out loud way but I appreciate the subtle humor. The scene with the kid was cute.

The brief chase fight scenes were smooth but choreographically and direction wise not much to notice it just was pretty quick stuff.

This is why anime is dying a painful death.

This garbage is the ultimate Millennials & gen Z wet dream. They could only last 3 episodes before b!tchslapping the message all over the episode, not that they didn't show snippets here and there in the first two episodes.

Insensitive depiction of Turkey & Turks and even having a White savior.

This show can't scream any louder I came about and was made possible by the US AID slush fund. Thank God that that faucet was turned off for good!

Review of [Lazarus:EP3]: Istanbul Deserves WAY Better Than This Trainwreck

As someone who actually knows Istanbul isn’t a random sandpit, I have to ask—did the creators even open Google Maps, or did they just scribble a beige blob and call it a day? This anime’s version of Istanbul is so painfully generic, it makes you wonder if they think every city east of Europe is just tumbleweeds and camels.

They managed to erase everything that makes Istanbul special—no Hagia Sophia, no Bosphorus, not even a hint of the city’s energy or culture. Instead, we get bargain-bin “Middle Eastern” clichés and outfits that look like they raided a costume shop for a bad school play. It’s almost impressive how little effort went into this—were they allergic to research or just lazy?

I recall as a history reader, that when Istanbul was in very good condition and thriving,ALL of Europe was in a miserable and a disaster life.

If you want to see Istanbul butchered beyond recognition, congrats, you’ve found your show. Otherwise, do yourself a favor and skip this embarrassing mess. Anyone else feel personally offended, or am I the only one with standards? 🤦‍♂️

Also, just thinking of the reference of that charecter who wore Saudi clothes, makes me feel ill, cause some people see it as a joke, but the message from it is not a joke, it's an insulting scene, that whatever Saudi or Turkish, you're all Muslims,as if they don't see the difference between them

This episode was amaaaaaaaaaaaaazing—10/10. And the reason? Traditional Arab clothing appeared in an anime! Oh my God, I’m so happy…

Of course, the Turks—especially those in Istanbul, as mentioned in the anime—might be annoyed, because this is Arab clothing, not Turkish. But baklava is shared between Arabs and Turks… And that table—if you’ve never tried tea and baklava from Qatif, you’ve missed half your life!

Now I’m craving baklava, and I’ll have some soon. Honestly, you must try it!

I haven’t even commented on the episode itself yet… Axel once again amazes us with his incredible presence—I really liked him.

As for the anime’s story, I won’t say much since many other anime share the same premise. But this one stands out for its beautiful animation and superb direction. Remember I said that in my comments on episode 1, right?

I really appreciated the mention of Arabs. While watching episode 2, I saw Chinese, Americans, Russians, South Americans, Indians—all mentioned alongside Turks (Istanbul)—but no Arabs!

Even though it was technically a mistake to portray Arab clothing as Turkish traditional attire, I was honestly so happy.

By the way, when Leyland was jumping off buses and all that, the ghutra and agal on his head didn’t fall off… The thing on his head is called a ghutra or shemagh, and the band that holds it in place is the agal. In reality, any sudden movement would knock it off—he didn’t secure it well. There are specific ways to secure it! Also, he was running without lifting his thobe—that’s what the outfit is called. You have to lift it up to run properly, otherwise you’ll trip and fall!

Best two frames so far are the following:

I love slice-of-life works.
