This has been on my mind for a while
I want to be a mother and I would love if my kids got into anime as well
But I was thinking of random stuff like what anime to let them watch and at what age and how much influence can I have on them
Ofc there will be future shows and there are already shows for kids and everything …
but I’m talking about - ahm:
We definitely didn’t follow age ratings when we started shows ( at least I didn’t lol ) - I watched shows R+18 when I was like 13-14 , violence , gore and nudity and so on
So let’s think like parents , will we let our kids do the same ? Or will we restrict them ?do we even have a say? Or will we let them do as they please ?

Anime aside for once, I wouldn't bring anyone to this world of hardships and suffering.
Even hypothetically I cant comprehend the idea of having kids

Of course they will watch anime , you can't ignore such a big part of your parent life

Indeed, if there is a future where I have children then I will do as my mother did with me and raise them on animanga so they can be just as awesome as me from the get-go.

I'm the sonny boy ( ̄y▽, ̄)╭

God forbid I ever have kids, but they'll probably be growing up consuming manga at the very least, since I'm slowly growing a translated collection of real copies.

But one thing leads to the other, so who knows. I wouldn't think about age ratings too much tho, I first watched Bleach when I was like 7. Definitely would keep stuff like Berserk or Junji Ito stuff hidden till they're 13-14 tho.

It all depends on individual. I definitely would not let any 6 year old to watch Elfen Lied or such, but generally watching some years higher rated is fine. On the other hand, if individual happens to be disturbed easily, I would strongly advise caution.

You shouldn't try to addict your future kids to anime, because let's be honest: we all know that most anime addicts don't turn out well xD

I don't plan to have children - If I did I would probably introduce some shows to them, if the interest persists the rest is up to them. When it comes to age ratings I wouldn't show them anything explicit + I doubt kids would like to watch something like that with their parents around anyway XD, if they want to watch it, they better hide well with it.

Guide them, take care of them, love them. Whether they get into anime, that's entirely up to them, although they will likely pick up what you're doing based on their environment.

I would have children only if I were a millionaire. Only way to ensure their happiness.

Just avoid letting multinational corporations manipulate you and your children and everything will be fine.
so don't let algorithm to decide what to watch, and ignore social media trends, and stuffs like that.
yeah, it's hard (almost impossible), but it would have to start with yourselves, and then you can apply it to your children.
or you can be a believer of technocracy, and lose your and your descendants free will...

He's 14 weeks old now, so a little early for anime, but I'm not going to force it on him at all. If there's anything that interests him, because I am watching it, I guess some Naruto, One Piece shonen could not hurt. 18+ (adult content) shows are definitely out of the question under my roof, period.

As any hobby my parents had didn't totally resonate with me, who knows? I won't force them to join, but if they do I'll be happy? Most Anime will be graphically outdated when they reach age. And I'll be strict with my kids, it is part of growing up that they do their things around my rules when I am not around. I want them to slowly discover things they like by themselves too. Even if it is to later go.

@RainyEvenings right. i can't imagine bringing a new human into this life of suffering AND raise them to be an otaku on top of that... how cruel would that be?!

Back when I was a kid, I had a strong interest on media made for members of the oposite gender in mind despite I myself being a boy. However, the tought of my male classmates and supposed "friends" I had on those days making fun of me for watching those led me to hide my true interests from pretty much everyone and only consuming "socially-acceptable" media for my gender for almost the entire duration of my childhood, something I now regret today.

So besides showing them some basic children's anime I myself watched and loved when I was a child, such as 1997's Pokémon, Digimon, Yu-Gi-Oh! and more specifical to my local area Dinosaur King, my personal favorite, I would make sure they understand they might watch as much media for the opposite gender (be they boys or girls, doesn't matter) as they want and that their classmates are in the wrong for making fun of them for it as well as to defend their interest in whichever situation they might need to do it.

I always tought consuming a wide array of media helps in developing a child's imagination and the more (age-appropiate) non-traditional media they consume the more stimulated their brain become and the more creative they turn out to be, which is something that's always positive when it comes to children this age.

I am also a firm believer that "strong" stories tremendously help when forming a child's character, something incredibly important on this day and age when spineless and overtly sensitive people are pretty much everywhere. Of course, that doesn't mean I would show them gore or sexually-explicit content in any way, that would be degenerate, that would be degenerate and quite literally, criminal, in more than one way. But emotionally charged altough not exactly explicit properties such as Full Moon wo Sagashite and maybe even Kimi no wa. should suffice.

Kimi no wa. I believe is especially important for them to watch, as I remember the first time I watched it when I was around 11 or 12 years old felt quite literally as a magical experience, and I would like my children also to have such a great experience also...

@chococats This is just a simple excuse to not take "risks" and responsibilities in life. I understand that too, but it's really simple as that....

You'll probably be fine if they get into anime when they're young. Put them on shounen/shoujo when they're toddlers and they should be hooked for life. It worked for my dad when he did it to me haha!

You didn't follow any age ratings and you turned out fine, right? The same would go for my kids I'd reckon.

@Yotsuba84 meh even if i took the risks and responsabilities i'd still feel bad because i'd do all that for them to suffer (and to be an otaku). i'm fine with taking risks and responsabilities with my studies only

Hypothetically speaking... I wouldn't introduce kids to anime. As a parent, I'd rather they read a book or play video games or something.

If they have to watch something, I'd encourage movies. For animated ones, old Disney and Ghibli would be best.

If they want to get into anime, they'll have to figure it out themselves or ask their friends.

I'll probably check and veto some really questionable stuff, though. I don't think Chainsaw Man is good for elementary school kids. Unfortunately it's probably not practical, checking every anime by watching it myself...

@Yonahim_Zz

I would suggest not to waste your time trying to "get" your kids into Japanese Anime. Children will get into whatever they want to when it comes to leisure entertainment as they grow up. If your children naturally gravitate into getting into this medium at some point in their life, it will simply just happen.

If your kids ever get into this medium, then you should start worry about what you want them to watch or not if they are still under the recommended age ratings for most seasonal shows.

My situation is different because my daughter has spent most of her life living with relatives in Japan since she started primary school. She has basically been exposed to Japanese Anime by default because it's everywhere there.

Have them watch chronologically. Start from old school anime and gradually catch up to modern day, parallel to their age.

'objectively' good shows only, of course.
