How do you think anime will be treated 100 years from now?

For context to that question, most people would probably never even try to find anime before the 1960's, and only very serious anime fans would go out and watch shows that old here. In a similar fashion, Disney cartoons form before the 1990's you would probably only find on VHS or reuploaded to something like youtube clip channels, but people aren't still seeking out entire seasons of 50-100 year old cartoons to watch unless you are a very serious cartoon fan.

On the other side, you have media like movies and books in which you see fans frequently go out of their way to read thousand year old books or watch movies from the 40's-60's.

Considering these media and the kinds of fans we have, do you guys think anime fans will still watch shows that will become over a 100 years old by the end of this century or will it fade into obscurity. Personally, I think there will still be some shows that fans will never let go of that are classics like the original Dragon Ball/Dragon Ball Z, Evangelion, Cowboy Bebop, or even something as old as Ashita no Joe which released in the 70's. I don't think anime will become obscure the way old disney cartoons are for American audeinces but let me know what you think

Hopefully in a very positive way, IF the mankind is still around. The so-called golden era of anime is already gone imo.

Assuming a global nuclear holocaust doesn't happen in the near future, i think anime would either grow steadily or decline depending on social, political, financial and cultural factors.

“Wow, I started watching anime! It’s super weird though. Imagine buying a TV, just to watch this. I watched One Piece,”

“What’s One Piece?”

100 years from now, anime will be treated like ancient scripture, studied by scholars in futuristic silver robes who debate the philosophical meaning of shonen power-ups and the real meaning behind every catchphrase.
Pirated Streaming services will be artifact vaults, hoarding lost episodes of One Piece and sanae-san (yes, they're STILL running)
Meanwhile, the "old-school fans" (aka me, but evolved into digital consciousness) will roll my virtual eyes at Gen Z 2125, who claim TikTok anime shorts are peak storytelling.
AI-generated anime will be dominating the industry.

I mean, people still watch Trip to the Moon, so why not Akira in 100 years?

Funny, I was listening to a 80 year old man (he died at 85 three years ago) who had a funny reference about his "girl type". An obscure reference I had never heard of because it was his generation, yet indexed online. I guess in 100 years, you might have parted some of your favorite titles or references to your children -those who will in 20 to 60 years- so they might survive through them. But the trend as a whole will have died, recorded along every cultural thing, the same stuff that happened for us, our parents and forefathers recorded more ever since the start of cinema (end of XIXth century).

On a purely tech perspective, the evolution of AI, quantum mechanics, education and population migration might slightly shift a few things. But 100 years throughout history have only brought out very small shifts. Worst case? An empire has fallen. A drop of water in the sea world.

Nothing "trendy" is eternal. We had stamp collecting before (still alive but dying). The VR industry is rising, even that will appear old-fashioned by then.

It might be more interesting to ask ourselves what might happen to anime in 1000 years though...

Someone doesn't have a Disney a/c. every Disney movie ever made is on their streaming site. I was showing my kid Black Cauldron and Sword in the Stone recently. Even the really old Disney movies like Sleeping Beauty or Snow White are still very watchable.

It is an amusing thought exercise to imagine what retro anime fans in say 50 years will consider a timeless classic, maybe In Another World with my Smartphone will find prominence in the future, who knows.

This question is invalid because there won't be anymore people on this planet 100 years from now.

It will be studied as a japanese psychological warfare tactic to make the western population decline in childbirth through exposure to idyllic sexualized drawn women that made them averted to real world interactions.

It's going to see as an era where Anime was fully created by digital animation since you know more Anime using AI are going to be more common in the future. I don't know if AI in Anime is still going to be a thing in 2125 or its replaced by something new.

Hard to say. A lot can happen in a hundred years. I think by then anime will be commonplace. Many will probably know of it and watch it. But it probably won't have the same novelty or popularity as it does now. Some anime that are popular now or a long time ago could remain in people's memory. But there also could be some that fade in memory due to new anime that gain a new generation's attention. The age of the animation, the series, and the accessibility of an anime could also impact whether or not they maintain relevancy.

@23feanor Unfortunately a lot of younger people are not getting to watch those movies anymore. Even things like the little mermaid and lion king had a decent chunk of their audience recently that only ever saw the live action remakes. Like even parents aren't bothering to show their kids Disney MOVIES let alone their animated series from the 80's and 90's. Quite sad honestly the old animated Disney movies did feel magical as a kid, it's a shame so many aren't watching them anymore (although the new pixar stuff is good too, maybe it's just a generational difference at this point).
