Honestly, I like this anime a lot because its something new and refreshing... Personaly, I havent seen anime like this before, so Im pretty hyped... When it comes to girls bands in general, 1. I love yuri ships and 2. there is just something so nice about the way all the characters slowly develop and achieve something... However, Im not a big fan of a cheerful character who pulls everyone into it and then something happens and they are like 'I dont want to do this anymore' (Honoka from Love Live for example, but dont take this seriously, I love Love Live so much!).

Nothing can touch Girls Band Cry.

I probably should watch a whole hell of a lot more girls band-based anime before making such a bold proclamation, like literally all the other ones out there. But still - Girls Band Cry reigns supreme.

Western audiences wouldn't even poke it with a pole... Mostly due to protag / vocalist Iseri Nina's troublesome and unbusinesslike personality, GBC is undigestable for many viewers outside of Asia (while Japan, China, Korea and South East Asia just loves her and the entire Garukura rock franchise). Cultural differences matter a lot more than expected.

I'm following GBC's weekly progress on MAL, Crunchy and IMDB in Excel and its numbers have stalled in the West. I think only a competent, high-effort and creative english dub could turn its fortunes now. Although GBC band Togenashi Togeari will perform this summer in L.A., that won't be a full concert just part of an anison expo and probably not enough to make much difference.

@WatchTillTandava you should really give Mygo and Ave Mujica a try. They are absolute peak when it comes to girls band anime and arguebly on the same level as GBC. Personally I even liked Ave mujica more than GBC.

@DarK-LaW no Mygo & Ave Mujica are spending too much time on dramas end up with less music. I would say both are okay and entertaining, Live scenes are above the average but nowhere close to GBC or Bocchi the Rock.

@Tacsk0 are you sure about this lol

BanG Dream! It's MyGO!!!!! 8.24 Ranked #346 Popularity #4086 Members 35,087

BanG Dream! Ave Mujica 8.08 Ranked #555 Popularity #4610 Members 27,140

Girls Band Cry 8.38 Ranked #212 Popularity #2070 Members 114,710

By watching the first couple of episodes I could already tell GBC is a better show, I remember gave it a 9/10 early days when it was around 7 on MAL

Problem in the West is simple: Crunchyroll population NOT watching Girls Band Cry, which has just 4204 viewers ratings on Crunchy, while Bocchi has 65862 ratings, about 15-16x difference. It doesn't matter that GBC is rated 4.9 score out of 5.0 even on CR, while so few people have seen it! (Btw, It's MyGo has even less, just 1749 ratings on CR.) Then consider the average casual anime watcher doesn't even know about Bocchi, much less GBC - they only encounter Solo isekai harem ninja dungeon slime party...

I do think an english dub would help GBC for various reasons:
  • The anime is quite heavy on dialogue plus Nina is such a motor-mouth, so subs can be difficult to follow for the ever less literate, emoji-only young generation. A dub would make GBC accessible to them.

  • Because the teenage rock musician girls of IRL band TogeToge also acted as seiyuu in GBC, their characters don't sound like sterotypical anime girls, more like real girls (especially true for Subaru). If dubbing to english remained faithful, the characters wouldn't sound like those "castrated chipmunk" voices often encountered in US anime dubs, a tone many viewers find super annoying. A more normal sounding dub would be a novelty and definitely call attention to GBC!

  • Styling of the dub, if done carefully, could modify the audience's perception of Iseri Nina. After all, she is the single largest stumbling block for GBC's success in the West. Her difficult and grating personality is currently unbearable for many otakus even, not to mention the general-casual anime watching masses on CR. Those who write reviews often voice a desire to replace her with a mellow character, i.e. another Subaru or Rupa. The great loving affinity Reddit displayed for Nina-chan and GBC is not representative of casual anime viewers' sentiment!
(I have an idea for creative GBC dubbing, but it would cost lots of money and effort and necessitate hiring a very talented author in english. As music anime genre is quite niche, Crunchy is unlikely to invest that much effort in it - they even robbed GBC of Best Original Anime title for the abominable 6.6 score Ninja Kamui... Thus GBC's franchise owner Studio Toei will likely focus most of its effort on China, to exploit the series' big popularity there. Traditionally TOEI hasn't understood how to market successfully in the West, anyhow.)

You cant lie about hype
Until the end, story matter

GBC : 8/10, organic story, i can feel their music

Bandori S4 MyGo ; slow but solid to 8/10, organic story, their real live band no keyboardist

Bandori S5 Mujica : slow but solid to 8/10, organic story, i can feel every single of their songs ( Killkiss, Crucifix X, Música Caelestis, Imprisoned XIII, Alter Ego, Octagram Dance ). Including real live perform Greensleaves Ave Mujica ( they adapt to anime too )

Rocklady : f-word and N-word for Rocklady, not organic story
I cant feel Rocklady songs, most of their songs become flat and plain ( Hamada Kenji as pro singer, Hiromi Igarashi as Bitter Ganache, Blanc Noir boring instrumental )

Too much show off for their mocap, Rocklady mocap from BAND-MAID
And useless head to head guitar vs drum

@Tacsk0 Well it makes sense. I think with dub it would probably double the viewership maybe? For a new IP it's not too bad though if comparing to other relatively niche series. But I doubt they would do that as clearly the RL band is focusing on Asian market. Adding a dub only for more viewership doesn't look like a good investment as western viewers would unlikely to have the chance to attend their gigs. They do have limited time online gigs frequently on a Korean site though but again just not sure if that would be enough to justify the cost.

I think GBC could easily achieve 5-fold increase in viewership if the english dub was made to present it primarily as comedy and only secondarily as drama. (GBC is currently perceived primarily as drama, with interspersed comedic elements - but that means viewers take Nina's difficult personality too seriously and hate her guts, instead of laughing at her. I'd like a dub which presents the story more as a farce.)

Specifically, I'd use the "hungarian Flintstone trick" to dub GBC. (In the 1960-65 original english audio track of The Flintstones, characters speak in prose. In the 1966-67 hungarian dub, they speak in verses or rhymes all the time, which made the cartoon super funny. That was important, since Hungary only had dull black-and-white TV broadcast at that time and the cartoon's consumer society parody theme was quite alien to viewers living in a communist planned economy, behind the Iron Curtain.)

If there was a bard writing a well-versed english dub for GBC, people would wet themselves ROFL while watching the series and by Ep.4 it would be all the craze!

I hope they keep 'em coming, maybe one every 2-3 seasons. It's often a fun time, and there's still a lot of material to mine, I feel.

I'm a little disappointed that very few people seem to be giving this one a try, though.

My theory is the girls aren't cute enough and look a little psychotic. And they're playing music that is a bit too loud. Which are the exact reasons I'm enjoying this...
