I'm 35 years old and I will stop watching anime around the time I die.
I mostly rewatch older anime than watch new ones.

I read somewhere that the average anime fan lasts about ~8 years before they stop.

I probably won't stop, unless I become a parent, but that seems unlikely.

I hated anime for most of my life and ultimately aged into it after college, when I started finding more to resonate with. Don't worry if you find yourself slipping away! Just go do those other things in life that you find more meaningful instead of forcing yourself to engage. You might come back.

I'm almost 40 (38 y/o) and this past year I thought i was aging out of it and getting less interested, since I haven't watched as much lately than I used to. But then I got sucked back in and I'm still quite interested. So I think anime will be with me for the rest of my life.

Been watching since the Pokémon days of the late 90s, so since 1997 or 1998 when I was 10 or 11. So it'll be almost 30 years of anime for me. Not to mention I'm still in love with JRPG, which is essentially interactive anime games.

@thewiru SEED is one of my all timers :)
@Hexis
It wasn't really SEED's fault, it just happened to get "the short end of the stick" at the time I was watching it.
Though at the time I did get a bit frustrated when 17 episodes in I was still asking myself "Hum, when is the plot gonna start?", only to then realize that, if the "plot" didn't start 17 episodes in, than that was the plot.

I never aged out of anime but I did have a period where I backed away from seasonals and was mostly watching old 80s shows. IMO assuming you can find shows that suit your taste anime is sort of an ideal TV format for fitting into adult life. Half-hour episodes hit a sort of sweet spot for blocks of uniterrupted time I can make in my weeks regularly, and there's such a wide variety of shows out there that you can adjust what you watch as your taste matures.

You shouldn't be thinking about aging out of it, you should be thinking about watching anime with your children if you get to be a parent or something and getting to appreciate it from another place.

That might be me intruding a bit too much, but I've noticed that you have a pretty high average score.
Back in late-2018 I, for a short-time, lost the ability to analyze anime. I later found out that the reason for that was that I was a bit of forcing myself to watch anime I wasn't liking and was "lying to myself" that they were good. This ended up, then, being likely the result of a certain burn-out that I had.

Not sure if that might also be your case, but it happened to me, I just "cured it" by "letting all out" some of my emotions about certain anime and then dropping Gundam SEED.

The fact that you wasn't liking what you were watching isn't the reason you weren't able to analyze.
Your analyses ability were just too weak.

How old do you think you'll be when you finally age out of music?
How old do you think you'll be when you finally age out of films?
How old do you think you'll be when you finally age out of reading?

Such questions makes no sense, you never "age out" of something.

Imagine implying Anime isn't something enjoyable for adults and implying its a media only for teenagers to enjoy. I actually watched more Anime as an adult while I was too busy playing games and being depressed in my teen years.

The funny part I'm older than you (not by so much) and I never think such things. It's not embarassed for adults to enjoy Anime.

FUCKING THIS!!!!! My pride, love, and enthusiasm grows day by day. It's an incredible medium that has changed my life, never trusted those who say they've, 'aged out' of anything. All our experiences, make us who were are!

The actual reason was that, by unconsciously suppressing my desire to analyze it negatively, my brain "shut this ability off" as to prevent further damage.

It's about the stories. I know deep in my heart if they keep creating niche psychological thriller anime I will come running. I've not "grown" out of it yet. I think the "grown out" part directly correlates to the fact I am aware of how much screen time is appropriate in the day.

Honestly to me anime is kind of like video games, I don't think it's anything I can ever see myself truly getting out of. I guess I may choose to be solely a dubbed fan in my elderly age since I probably won't be able to read the subtitles due to poor eyesight at that point. XD

@thewiru

So your "cure" had absolutely nothing to do with actually enjoying the Shows. It was just you knowing that, at the end, you'd get to talk about yourself and what you think and people had to acknowledge you. You "let it all out" on MaL and the attention gave you joy. That's why you watch Anime xD

Oof.
Yeah, that checks out.

I doubt I will ever "age out" of it. Sure my enthusiasm will Wax and wane like all my interests, but it will never go away so long as Anime that interest me exists.
If you're not having fun with the shows you watch anymore, it might be time to shake things up (try a new genre/demo), or take a break.

I watched some anime as a kid, got serious about it when I was 12 and had a whole phase from basically 13 - 18 where my primary media consumption was anime and manga. Now I'm 24 and I feel myself slipping farther and farther away from this medium year by year for multiple reasons. I've been trying to cling onto anime/manga, still watching a handful of shows a year and (attempting) to participate in AWC, MRC etc. but I don't want to force myself if it's not as entertaining anymore. I think I'll probably age out of anime and stop watching it completely by the time I reach my mid 30s or so.

I think aging out of anime will never fully happen, like you for always will appreciate anime and even watch it. Though at some point you will start watching significantly less animes, to the point where you like only watch 3-4 a year. I think for me personally I'll reach that point when I'm like 20

I don't think it's really about age, it's more about getting bored of something. If some starts playing soccer at 15 and stops at 25 have they aged out the sport? There are also people who might not start playing soccer until they're 25, though. I know people who have gotten into anime when they were 24 or older. Not everyone can enjoy something forever, and but it's not directly correlated with age. If I ever stop watching anime I will not blame my age, and I'm open to the idea of getting back into it after taking a break.

When we grow up, we will stop what we love because it does not fit our age. But I think the perfect time to stop being A weeb or an otaku is when you have a job and a girlfriend... but that is my opinion but for age, I think it stops when we reach our 30... But still, I want to continue what I love hope this goes on forever...

age out of anime? I don't think so. please. Anime isn’t just a phase, it’s a lifestyle. I'm not “stuck” in it; i’ve simply ascended to the elite club of eternal anime fandom, where the OPs slap harder, the plot twists hit deeper each season, and every slice-of-life scene feels like an ode to my soul.

You don’t “age out” of perfection. It grows with you, evolves, and finds new ways to remind you why it’s worth every second of your time.

Never really. My enthusiasm may decrease, as I get into other hobbies, get busier with work and responsibilities (this has been going on for years) however, I don't see why I would stop enjoying anime like Legend of the Galactic Heroes or Ghost in the Shell. Those are pretty universal stories to me. Will I always get super excited for the next battle shonen hotness? Will I have a point where I stop enjoying anime rom coms entirely? Maybe? Possibly, at the moment I still can enjoy them. That said, especially for romance anime, my appreciation for them, isn't where it once was (due to the YA nature of them).

Honestly I love the anime art style, it's just more the style of writing, with most stories being very YA, that can get a bit tiring after awhile. Though again, I will just move to a different medium for a bit. I don't mind a YA esque story once in awhile.

ixaa said:
@DesuMaiden No literally never. I've never finished a book in my entire life. Not even kid books. But I think this is extremely common for Americans so it's not culturally shocking. I'm surprised whenever I meet an adult who can manage to actually get through all 40 pages of if you give a mouse a cookie. It's just fascinating
Man you are missing out. There are some really good books, out there, if you are SFF fan. Getting back into reading fiction, has been a boon for me, and has eaten up time I used to use on anime.

ELA teachers need to offer more free reading time, for kids in schools. Not everyone needs to be reader, however, I do think it's better for society, if we have more people that do read for fun.
@BilboBaggins365

I appreciate your sincere concern. However I must let you know that my comment was sarcastic 😭 Don't worry about me, I just finished my 4th book of the year haha. I agree people should read more though overall

@thewiru I tend to watch shows with higher scores aka other people vet, so I don't waste time. I almost never watch a show with sub 7 rating on MAL unless it happens to be seasonal/airing. Of course there's always a chance that I like something that others won't, but it doesn't happen enough for me to make it worth it ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I also lied to myself that a lot of anime were good and pushed through LOL I don't think this has attributed to burnout though because nowadays, I tend to drop shows that I dislike quickly.

@ixaa Well that is a classic case of sarcasm not coming through text lol. I am going to start getting a lot more free time soon, I do need to finish up anime, however, honestly fictional novels really feel a bit more fresh than anime at the moment. Need to get more and more into it.

Despite my name, the amount of non Tolkien fantasy I have read is not as high as I would like it to be.

Interests and taste change but I don't believe in "aging" out of it. It's hard to say you will at any point never watch another movie, listen to another song, watch another episode of TV. I am nearing my mid-30s and have had periods where I only watched an episode or two a week. I do not see any time where I completely stop.

I'm in my early-mid 20s rn. I have the same sentiment. I have been slowly drifting away from anime as I'm getting older, but right now, I've tried to "savor" the way I'm watching anime. For example, I only watch 1 or 2 series per month and would take a breather after finishing a series; I would watch reactions, reviews, and Reddit posts to learn about the intricacies of the anime and collate what I think of it.

Would I stop watching anime? Maybe, but I wouldn't shut it out and hopefully wouldn't grow out of :)
