I’ve been reading the Ubel Blatt manga in tandem with watching the anime and see that they’ve omitted all of the sex scenes depicted in the manga. Why?

Have the animators or studio executives made any statements on the matter?

I would rather avoid speculation.

The studio has no say in this. These kind of censorship decisions are made by the production committee, which is made by several other companies.

Usually, many TV stations that broadcast the show are also part of the production committee. Most TV stations don't show uncensored nudity or ecchi depictions in their channels. Looks like Ubel Blatt had such stations in the committee. If they had AT-X as one of the producers, there could've been an uncensored version including all the ecchi and nudity scenes.

I think when it was first announced they were going to have them. One of the genres it was listed under was Ecchi. I didn't even know they had sex scenes until I saw this went to go read it. Definitely would've liked to see Altea...you know😂

They made a censored adaptation, it's just that simple.
If you reply back to me and I never respond, I lost interest and don't care. Sorry about that.

@RoseofThorns

The Mal tags are arbitrarily added by the ones who add the anime to the database they have no any official value, someone simply added ecchi tag that's all, and sex scenes and ecchi are different things.

@joechip my statement still stands. They were probably going to do the scenes, that's why they had ecchi, but was canceled. Hence why the ecchi tag was removed.

Since nobody gave no satisfactory answer to the question I will do so. The director has answered the question in this interview

Quote from the interview

" When I was given the job, I noticed that the original work contained some erotic elements in certain parts. I discussed how to handle those with the studio, the committee, and the original creators. For this anime adaptation, I wanted to focus on Köinzell, who is consumed by revenge, regaining his heart through the various people he meets during his journey. The emphasis was on his growth as he overcomes his anger and revenge. As a result, we decided to remove the erotic elements and proceed without them."

Actually, they do to some extent since an anime production is a group effort, not just finalized by one decision maker. The interview I posted makes it more clear as the director says " I noticed that the original work contained some erotic elements in certain parts. I discussed how to handle those with the studio, the committee, and the original creators."

Wow! Thanks for sharing the quote. I had no idea.

It's interesting that he said he wanted to focus on Koinzell. I wonder if that means the studio, the committee, and the original creators also wanted to focus on Koinzell. In that case, though, "I wanted" should have been "we wanted." But then later, he said, "We decided to remove," which makes me wonder what their actual goal was. All it really did was frustrate people and push them to read the manga.

Maybe that was the point—to promote the manga by making the anime so lacking that fans would turn to the source material. If so, that’s a pretty dubious and stupid strategy.

» (TL;DR Through Analysis) This anime is actually a really good adaptation so far, they are just rearranging things and removing the pointless erotica that also disappears from the manga after the beggining anyway. ( 1 2 )
