A few years back I got to see a remastered version, but not IMAX, in a theater and it totally blew my mind all over again.

GKIDS released the 4K restoration in the US just last week, and I was lucky enough to catch one of the last showings where I live. Maybe you can still find a screening in your area, if you check right now.

I'm glad you at least caught the remaster in theaters. I've never seen Princess Mononoke in any theater screen before this, and it was absolutely worth it. I'm definitely going to keep a closer eye on anime screenings from now on.
@perseii I try to catch anything Ghibli in a theater if I can, as they were so unavailable except in niche theaters, for so long. First one I got to see was Naasica, it was the 25th or 30th anniversary remaster. I've seen Spirited Away and Howl's Moving Castle in the theatre. I even saw Porco Rosso at an art house theater in Detroit whe it first came out. I think there might have been a dozen of us there. We all came out buzzing though. That movie doesn't get the love it deserves.

@perseii ^&%^$$ My local theater (Its only 30 miles away) has IMAX, and they are showing Princess Mononoke; but not in IMAX. I will give them some props though. Last time I saw it, it was only in the English dub, Which is really good, but I think it misses some of the subtle emotion clues you get with the Japanese VAs. But lo and behold! They are also playing the subbed version. Unusual in a small town in the southern US.

If my allergies weren't kicking my ass today, I might have gone to see it. 🤧

Depends, how often there are interesting ones.
1. Look Back, it became my second favorite anime movie of all time.
2. Byousoku 5 Centimeter, hands down the best one.
3. It's not stand alone, but i hope Chainsaw Man: Reze-hen will be good, and Housenka seams to be interesting, from the director of ODD TAXI and studio CLAP.

Not that much in recent years, but mostly because I've already watched the majority of movies that I'm interested in from the last couple of decades that were made by my favorite directors years ago and recent years have not provided all that many that picked my interest. My most recent one was probably the last Miyazaki movie with the birds and I have a theatrical screening of When Marnie Was There coming up in a few weeks that I'm looking forward to since I think it's the only Miyazaki movie I haven't seen yet. I also take the opportunities to watch Ghibli movies in theatres since one of my local cinemas is screening at least one older Ghibli movie movie each year and it's always nice to get to see them in theatre since most of them I only ever saw at home.

I'm open to recs for standalone movies from the last 5 years or so, but most that I come across sound pretty generic or are in genres that aren't a high priority for me, but I could definitely have missed some since I'm not actively looking into the entire output of the industry. For the most part I've just been watching a lot of live-action movies for the last 1,5 years, including but not limited to japanese movies by directors like Kore-Eda, Hamaguchi or Kurosawa. In terms of animated movies I've been much more excited about the output of other countries for the last few years. Memoir of a Snail was fantastic, Flow was pretty good too, Mitchells vs the machines was surprisingly good and Marcel the Shell with shoes on was certainly one of the most quirky and unique movies I've seen in recent years, just to name a few that left an impression. I'm also looking very much forward to Clause Barras' 'Sauvages' since his previous movie 'My Life as Zucchini' ended up as one of my alltime favorites.

As for what I think is the best movie (I assume you'e just talking about animated movies from Japan) it's a close race between Night Is Short, Walk on Girl, Princess Mononoke and The Tale of Kaguya-sama, closely followedby Tokyo Godfathers. In terms of looking forward to stuff, I'm not up to date on what's announced so I can't really comment on that.
I probably regret this post by now.

I watch anime movies every now and then. I like the stand alone ones for the fact that it's a full story in one movie. If an anime I've watched has some movie thingie I'll mostly watch them too since I am kind of a completionist.

And the last movie I watched was a few days ago Summer Wars which I enjoyed a lot. The story was nice, fun autistic super power characters and a nice digital landscape. To top it all off the credits scene song is by my favorite japanese artist and I wanna buy my own copy of the film. Yeah I like it that much.

I have no idea about any upcoming anime movies as I just watch stuff after they've come out and I have enough movies to watch as is since I just pick all that seem remotely interesting.

I'd like to imagine that that Porco Rosso screening in some small way paved the way for more anime to be released in North American theaters... so that I got to watch Princess Mononoke in a downtown multiplex in a packed 6:30PM screening.

The only Ghibli film I caught in theaters in the West was The Boy and the Heron 2 years ago, and I was surprised then that it got such a wide release. A lot of local theaters screened both subbed and dubbed versions, too.

Feeling pretty hopeful about theatrical releases in the future.

@perseii I read somewhere Miyazaki-san came out of retirement to make that for his grandson. My understanding is that he is still involved with the studio on some level, but he's totally out of directing now.

I haven't been following that closely, so maybe there are some here that might add some more to this discussion.

I'd recommend Inu-Oh, but I'm guessing you already watched that, since Night is Short, Walk on Girl is one of your favorites...

Another recent music anime that I liked was Blue Giant. Awesome jazz music, and the visuals were often breathtaking.

Speaking of French animation, The Summit of the Gods. I watched it on Netflix on a whim, and it made an impression on me. Mountain climbing, with realistic character designs and art style, which was refreshing. It's actually a manga adaptation, funnily enough.

@perseii Yeah I've seen Inu-Oh and liked it. Didn't know Blue Giant got a movie adaptation, that's definitely something I'll be wanting to check out. Thanks.

As for Summit of the Gods, it's an adaptation of one of my alltime favorite manga so it's definitely been on my radar since before it came out, but I've also been kinda saving it for a rainy day. I just know I'm going to love it :>.

Anyway, thanks for the recs! <3

Not as often as I used to since I feel like I've already watched a majority of the movies that actually might interest me.

1. Suzume, and yes I actually did enjoy it, more than I thought I would.
2. My brain says Ghost in the Shell or The End of Evangelion, but my heart says Spirited Away.
3. Virgin Punk could be good? Copium?

Much less than I should. If I remember correctly the last anime movie that I watched in my own volition without it being necessary to continue an anime (in that case it would be the Violet Evergarden movie) it was Suzume. And that like probably a year ago or even more time. The funny thing is that I love going to the movie theater so I don't know why it is so difficult for me to watch movies at home (the same happens to me for non-anime movies so it is a medium problem).

1. What was the latest movie you saw? Did you enjoy it?

If OVA movies count, I watched Black Magic M-66 a couple of days ago. Some people who worked on Ghost in the Shell worked on this film apparently, which I found way after the fact. Really enjoy the action and thriller. Lots of tense scenes choreographed better than most anime honestly. Though, sadly, there's very little plot. But hey, if you want to see a lady kick some android's ass, have at it.

2. What is the best movie of all time in your opinion?

Anything by Satoshi Kon, but I rewatch Paprika the most. The movie is insanely creative and well choreographed. The story, especially of the cop/detective, is handled really well. And the dark humour is some places is pretty funny to me. Honestly, very solid work all around.

3. Are you looking forward to any upcoming movies?

Regarding future not-yet-released works? Not really. But I'll probably check out whatever's gonna catch my eye. In the meantime, I'm gonna watch some older works that's gathering dust in my backlog.

1: probably this on TV. It was boring.
2: Toki wo Kakeru Shoujo. a masterpiece for me. Broad generations know the original story in Japan.

I watch them on a "whenever an interesting looking one comes out" basis, which is usually a couple of years after it releases due to copyright legal shite, unless I'm super lucky and the local theater plays it.

This year so far I've seen:

Maboroshi
Macross: Do You Remember Love? (a rewatch thanks to the 4K Blu-ray)
Teasing Master Takagi-san: The Movie

I rarely watch anime movies since the adaptations are usually from certain genres that while I don't dislike, I'm not really fond of. I tend to avoid romance and drama nowadays as I've watched a fine share of those and they've become too repetitive for me to enjoy.

There are some exceptions here and there but most of them share those points in common.

I do watch sequels in movie formats or spin-offs or those sort of things like the Chainsaw man sequel I'm definitely watching it. The tengen toppa movies I've watched both despite being kind of a recap with extra scenes. Promare I really liked, it felt like Trigger trying to relive the mecha era.

Those are the ones I can think of and I'm surely missing some.

Last one I've seen was the jujutsu kaisen movie, a beast of a movie for something like jjk lol

I watch anime stand alone ova and movies a lot.
I mostly pick up those feel good movies about human connections and cozy slice of life with supernatural occultic twists like youkai, ghosts, alien being wacky and cute and fun.

Not enough, to be honest. Which is pretty weird given that I'm down to binge watch four our five episodes of a really good show, but a feature-length film makes me think "that's going to take up a lot of my Saturday". Maybe it's a psychological thing.

Gonna make a second reply since I thought about my previous one and realized I watch quite a bit of anime movies. According to Anime+ I have 21% of all anime I've seen as movies which is half of my TV count. I personally feel that 21% is a good chunk.

@Nysse 358 TV/184 movies vs. my 753 TV/182 movies. Yep, your 21% is a pretty big number indeed. Only 5.4% for me. However, I have so many music videos on the list, so it's not so accurate. I don't count those as "anime", you know?

1. What was the latest movie you saw? Did you enjoy it?

- Bocchi the Rock: Movie and I've enjoyed it, but it basically was only a recap of the first season.

2. What is the best movie of all time in your opinion?

- https://myanimelist.net/anime/513/Tenkuu_no_Shiro_Laputa?q=castle%20in%20the&cat=anime, probably because it's the one I was watching the most so far. It's just a beautiful movie you can watch every time.

3. Are you looking forward to any upcoming movies?

- Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba Infinity Castle Edit, Miss Kobayashi's Dragon Maid: A Lonely Dragon Wants to be Loved and Chainsaw Man the Movie: Reze Arc.

4. How often do you watch anime movies?

- Only from time to time, because I only can get into movies of Ghibli and shows I was watching previously. I haven't watched many stand alone movies and I don't think it's going to change any time soon.

2. What is the best movie of all time in your opinion?
3. Are you looking forward to any upcoming movies?

1: Mahou Shoujo Lyrical Nanoha: Detonation, and not much, really. The previous film ended in an "upwards note", so I had nice expectations for this one. Alas, it was very subpar — repetitive, even. If we're only talking about standalone movies, then it was Youjuu Toshi. This one was OK, Kawajiri knows how to draw pretty women. Watched it while there was a blackout here, but it's not the type of movie that gives you much to think about, really.

2: Well, MAL considers Little Witch Academia a movie, despite it being episode-length. I remember loving Suzumiya Haruhi no Shoushitsu back in the day, though I don't recall much about it now, I should really rewatch it (Same goes for Ao no Exorcist Movie). Not counting sequel-films, I regard Vampire Hunter D (2000) quite fondly.

3: No, not really, for reasons explained previously.

I rarely watched standalone movies, but I'm trying to watch more of them this year for that reason.

For additional questions:

1. Tokyo Godfathers - yes, it was good ^^. It was chaotic, has a simple story, but lovable spirited characters, which made it a timeless movie

2. Can't really say when I hardly got any 😅

3. Virgin punk seems interesting, but that's only because it's done by Shaft, and I'm not really setting my expectations high :)
