InuYasha came to my mind first. I don't hear people talking about that show too much anymore.

Also, Aldnoah.Zero.
@Serafos it gets stale the longer you watch it

Well I don't care about the popularity of anime shows. I watch whichever anime shows interest me.

Alr I was gonna say SnS but I guess that was already mentioned here.

So instead I'll say Fairy Tail, cause I remember around when I started getting into anime the show being somewhat relevant, but after 2020 I have not seen a SINGLE person talk about or mention this show both irl and on mal (besides series discussions)

And I also would say InuYasha, but it honestly seems like it's gotten like some random resurgence around my highschool!!!! Like just the other day I heard my classmates talking about the show in art class, and heck, I even saw another classmate walking around in an InuYasha shirt in the hallways, along with some random person reading the InuYasha manga on the bus.
Or maybe that's just a local thing cause I've seen InuYasha mentioned on this thread a bunch. BUT I AM JUST SO FLIPPING HAPPY PEOPLE ARE WATCHING INUYASHA AGAIN!!!!!!!

First two that came to mind are The Vision of Escaflowne and The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya. Until like the early 2000s you'd almost always see Escaflowne mentioned with Neon Genesis Evangelion as one of the biggest anime. Basically Evangelion was the big sci-fi and Escaflowne was the big fantasy, not to mention it's one of the predecessors of iseki. But then Escaflowne just stopped being talked about and I didn't really get it. It was a quality show, had some influence, good production, a bit ahead of it's time. Escaflowne just being like a footnote now when it'd be Mt. Rushmore material for many many fans in the late 90s is weird to me. I guess since it was just the show and movie people eventually moved on.

I feel like most anime fans know Haruhi Suzumiya. It was basically the biggest thing for 1-2 years and nothing came close. It felt like the original FullMetal Alchemist dominated the anime community until Haruhi came out and then you didn't really get that same feeling until maybe Attack on Titan. It was that big and like Escaflowne, it's just not really talked about. This one could be easier to explain. It might of just been a perfect storm, being the peak example when the moe fad was exploding, a "meme-able intro" back in 2006 and the novelty of the release grabbing people and these things can certainly fade. Plus Endless 8 kinda tarnished it, but my god for anyone else who was an anime fan in the mid 2000s remembers how omnipresent it was.

A few others I'll throw out quickly, Ah! My Goddess (could Belldandy be credited as being one of the first wifus?, but it was probably just more her appeal and not the show), Love Hina (this along with Tenchi Muyou are more or less the godfathers of harem with Love Hina being the more typical, grounded one, though I don't think anyone would say it was amazing), Fushigi Yuugi (again just a show that was pretty beloved and popular and now just history)

So based on my subjective experience online, besides some shows that have already mentioned on this thread, here are other titles that managed to reach 1 million members on MAL but I don't recall many people talking about them much online nowadays:

I wasn't here when it aired, so I cannot understand how Noragami is in the top 100 most popular on MAL (27th right now, but I remember it was 14th a few years ago).

I agree. Noragami was the first thing that came into my mind when I saw this thread.

Casshern and Casshern Sins (again, except for Tatsunoko vs Capcom players)
The Brave series (barely anyone knows that GaoGaiGar was its final installment)
InuYasha (the title character is in Super Smash Flash 1)
Lucky Star (a late 2000s period piece)
The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya

Shiroi Suna no Aquatope is the first to come to mind for me. A lot of people I knew watched it when it came out, and then no one ever talked about it again.
"Molly Ringwald" out right now - check my Linktree!

Durarara. I know it's not completely forgotten, but to newer anime fans it's practically nonexistent and never talked about anymore </3

@Retro8bit

Robotech is not an anime though, it's simply the bastardized version of Macross.

@PurpleAki And the crazy thing is they keep making seasons. A new one is in the works, when no one talked about season 3. It still must be popular in Japan.

I think there's a couple of different kinds of situations for this? There's like era defining shows that are wild commercial successes, say, Evangelion, Haruhi, K-ON!, or perennial shows that are always there, Gundam, the big 3... then there are much shorter lived blow ups... like say One Punch Man, Overlord or Shield Hero?

Overlord shows the dropping off effect as the members watching list wanes:

S1: 1,676,743
S2: 1,079,683
S3: 961,876
S4: 584,403

Granted those are still massive numbers, but interest is undeniably dropping off... I've never wanted to be in a conversation about Overlord so I don't know if people don't talk about it... I assume they don't as much anymore lol

For me a show that dropped off the radar was Magi... I'm still here, waiting for another sequel -_-

@Piromysl

People are still fighting about School Days in a thread from last week right here XD

@rbp_pbr2 barely anyone talks about Gundam here except for the same 7 people and granted reddit has a decent sub forum for Gundam, but its like 2% of the anime sub reddit.

The Haruhi Suzumiya franchise is the one I find it the hardest to believe in retrospect. It would not be far-fetched to say that it was one of the most important and defining pieces of an entire era for the anime fandom, one that was going very strong whan I first got into anime. In the otaku circles during the late 00s and early 10s, it was as central in pop culture as the Big Three or the Jojo franchise. And now? Left without a trace.

@Scyfher

Yea, wasn't there a brief flash of people getting mad at witch from mercury?

But yea, the point I was trying to make was that there were different classes of shows in the discourse... like it's kinda different for shows which have been getting made for decades - still getting made but having fallen out of consciousness while still getting talked about...

Which is different to a show which comes along, blows up with one or two runs and then disappears...
